I have been leading an effort in my community to rename my local Negro Creek. My motivation is not political correctness. My motivation is because before I actually looked at a map and saw the name was Negro Creek all I ever heard anyone refer it to was by the name "N-Word" Creek. I am sure you can fill in the blanks. I live in De Pue Illinois in Bureau County Illinois. I have met some resistance in this effort, but also have garnered some support. We have a facebook group called 'Lets rename Negro Creek'. Our opposition has a group called 'Leave Negro Creek Alone'. Many small minded people have been very angry about this. Once small town even passed a resolution to oppose renaming the creek. As far as I am concerned I do not see people stopping the use of the phrase "N-Word" Creek until it is renamed. Research shows that one of the earliest African American settlers along the creek was named Enoch Love. We believe Love's Creek would be a great new name with good historical context.
