After more than four hours of debate, the House approved a bill today to require testing of future welfare applicants for illegal drug use if a required survey determines they are likely drug users.

“We believe this is a good policy decision,” said House Public Health and Human Services Chairman Sam Mims, R-McComb.“This will make them better mothers, better dads, and better community members.”

The bill passed 74-46.

Mims said House Bill 49 applies only to new applicants for Temporary Assistance to Needy Families. He said he doesn’t see it as a partisan bill because the bill’s goal is help people.
Democratic lawmakers said the legislation is punitive and not needed.

House Democrats asked dozens of questions about the privacy and constitutionality of drug testing for people seeking Temporary Assistance for Needy Families.

Democrats offered several amendments that ultimately failed, including one that would've required drug testing for corporate executives, college students and others who receive state financial support.

Republican Gov. Phil Bryant supports the drug testing proposal, saying it could lead to treatment for welfare recipients who are found to be using illegal substances.

I must say while I believe in saving money I believe this will cost the state more than it saves and beyond that the constitutionality of it could be more than debated.

What next? Does my grandmother get asked to pee in a cup so she can get her social security? Do my friends need to take their kids in so they can get medicaid? In the future will I need to pee in a cup when I visit the DMV? I don't want a future where the government who is regulating our entire system of life to have more power.

I want a government who is deregulated so much that they barely have an impact on my life or anything I do. I want a government whose only purpose is to help me pursue happiness by staying out of my way.

I agree 100%. There are way too many people whose dream job would be to become the equivalent of a modern day tower guard at Auschwitz.
Also, where would the money come from for the treatment of these welfare recipients?

I am all for it- I don't care if folks on SS have to be tested - we need a drug free country. Half of the old folk are addicted to prescription drugs.

The founding fathers did not believe in weak government nor did they want one which was too strong to question.
