I certainly don't, I think our sheriff is doing a great job. He has done more than anyone else in my recent memory. I bet you will call 911 if you have trouble and they will help you.

Hahahaha, Got to agree w/ Lol on this. I know several residents of Lucedale that are hoping Tony Keel is gonna run again and alot of folks wish they would've voted for him instead of the current administration. Simply because of some of the useless deputies he hired back and because he filled supervisory positions with his buddies instead of people that actually deserve it.

I'm having a hard time understanding the spending of 120,000 dollars in such a short period of time. The reason given was employee overtime. The last I heard, The averege pay for a deputy wasn't much higher than 12 dollars an hour. I don't know this to be a fact, Just wondering. Also, Is the Sheriffs dept. paying all of these under cover officers riding around?

That is alots of money Mentul, I do know when all of the home break ins were taking place they were working like crazy. We have had a murder, armed robberies and alots of drug busts. I am not taking up for over spending, but I think they are under budgeted. This county has a lots of crimes that did not happen a few years ago. You and I live on opposite sides of the county and it is a big area to patrol, I think we need people in each area at all times. I feel sure money could be saved in all County departments.

CIP. In 2005 Sheriff Welford had 5 murders, 2 hurricanes (including Katrina) rash of church burglaries not to mention a large spree of home burglaries. Granite MS including George Co did get assistance from out of state agencies but his department was there also. All that to say he didn't even get as large a budget as the current admin does but he (Welford) kept within his aloted budget. He done that by keeping deputies and agents accountable for their overtime when they did have to work it instead of just running wildly around accumulating overtime with nothing to show for it. This county has actually had less crime in Howells first year than in either George Miller or Gary Welfords first year. The problem is the management of personel and accountability for the overtime. That's just like assigning a deputy to the FBI task force , George county has always had access to this group without having to pay a deputy to be in Jackson co most of his shift. The FBI task force assisted on a couple of murders and several drug investigations without having to have a full time deputy assigned to them. There are ways to cut down on overtime such as allowing a deputy to take another day off when it's slow or just simply being accountable if and when overtime is called for. Every law enforcement agency could use MORE money but reality of life is in this economy EVERYONE has to watch and be accountable for overtime money. Don't just let officers come out when THEY feel like it and claim they've worked overtime If it can be done by other Sheriffs with lesser budgets than Howell was given surely he can control his folks and watch their overtime. Crime has NOT increased since Howell it has actually slowed since he's been in office. Oh along with the hurricanes and murders forgot to mention there were 86 or 96 meth labs busted and a couple of large marij grows. So the "more crime than before" don't cut it here. It is what it is NOT KNOWING HOW TO MANAGE MONEY OR OFFICERS.
You certainly seem to know the facts and I agree that everyone in this county should watch their budget. Maybe Mr. Howell has created an environment that crime does not want to exist in. I know of a few things in my own area that he has handled very well. I support our supervisors in every effort to control spending, but the cost of gas is much more than it use to be and so are wages, cars and every other aspect of the economy. Thank you for this information I appreciate it.

The whole agency is a joke nation wide! People were making fun of them at the flea market in Mobile a couple of weeks ago. Very unprofessional bunch there that really seem to not have a clue as to what to do. Couple of preppy guys who think there too cool and some with batman stickers on police cara. How childish can a Sheriff let his officers be? Overheard a couple in a local restaurant asking if the sheriff was a woman or man. Wouldn't quite sure who was running the agency.

No, we were at flea market and overheard 4 to 5 that seemed to be in the same group(believe one is an attorney in Lucedale) the cars were at a barbecue restaurant on hwy 26 in town the other day & that's where a man in there asked was the sheriff a woman. Sorry for such confusion .
Well, if you did not know the sheriff why would that be an unusual question? I had a girl cousin named Dean, I just don't find that much to bad mouth our law enforcement over - they have a dangerous job for little pay.

Hmm, wonder how much overtime is being paid to upstairs admin? Or non essential personnel? Lots of questions have been previously raised on topix about job descriptions/titles, and the need for unmarked cars being driven by those who may not need them.(These concerns were met with a next day news story on WKRG channel 5...) That's a problem, folks.
