More than 1,000 Northern California-based egg-laying chickens are flying the coop — literally. According to the Sacramento Bee, Grass Valley's Animal Place, a non-profit sanctuary for farm animals, found homes all the way across the country for 1,200 chickens that are all set to retire. They convinced animal sanctuaries across the East Coast to house the old birds that would have otherwise been killed. The chickens will now be able to roam freely and enjoy the post-working life. An anonymous donor paid for the $50,000 charter flight, which has been dubbed "Operation Chicken Airlift."
