GEORGE COUNTY, MS (WLOX)-
Lucedale Mayor Doug Lee is in Singing River Hospital recovering from a heart attack. Lee was in stable condition Monday night, according to the Reverend Larry Havard.

Lee collapsed Monday afternoon outside the Dollar General store in Lucedale. Reverend Havard told WLOX News a man at the store performed CPR on the mayor until an ambulance arrived.

Lee was flown to Singing River Hospital where he received two stents, according to Havard.

Have you ever thought he could have been worse off had it not been started until more effective means arrived? Still heroes, all of them, even those with the job of it.

Maybe you should know yours. I talked to the guy who performed CPR. He told me that when he got there, no one was doing anything so he told his wife he was going to start CPR. A nurse was there to help but was not active. He said nothing about an officer. Medics then arrived and used the device, took him to George Regional and he was lifeflighted to SR hospital.

Yes Sir Mis-A-Scoops-Alot, you should know yours!!! The person that applied the AED was a George County First Responder. Doug was in Atrial Fibrillation. The shock delivered reset and restarted his heart.

Now for the hear say:
1. I do not know who started CPR. But this man, woman, or whoever started the life saving procedures probably saved Doug. This person is a hero.
2. I heard that Joe and Kellum both performed CPR. If this is true, these two are heros.
3. In the paper this morning, it stated Doug's heart stopped in the ambulance. When I asked the medic in the ambulance if this is accurate, it was stated his heart did not stop enroute to hospital.
4. No one has made any statement (that I know of)about the condition of Doug when he was put on 'copter. He was awake and alert but in pain. The reason for the pain is understandable. Heart attack (usually)and CPR (always if performed properly)causes a lot of pain.

Bottom line is Doug would not be with us if not for the rapid and unselfish action of a multitude of people. I have seen with my own eyes that a witnessed arrest with immediate CPR and other life-saving actions sometime do not result in the saving of a life. May GOD bless all who had anything to do with this "snatching a life from death". Pray for Doug, his family, and that someone will do the same for you and your family in your moment of need.

I heard it took ASAP Ambulance over 20 minutes to arrive in scene. Why? Because they had to responded from Leaksville. If this is true, it is a miracle Mayor Lee lived. Who signed the contract with this EMS service? Is it the Hospital, County, or City? Whoever has this contract needs to look into that before someone in Lucedale really dies. A lack of EMS service is not excusable.

consider that there are about 400 miles of county and many times all are out on other emergencies. It takes time after coming off of a call.

You are not reading right as I have stated the words as said by the first responder who said no one but him was doing CPR until the medics arrived. He claims that Doug was purple and already dead. You can take it up with him if he has it wrong. He also said the family wants to meet him. However, the last part of your post should be taken to heart by all as I have known all of this to be a fact since the 80s when I was in the fire department and trained in first aid. Heart trouble is increasing all over the county as the medics can tell you. I was also told that Doug was undergoing surgery for a defribulator yesterday by the cashier at Wayne Lees'

What do you expect of those who don't know the county? Need to get rid of all medics now and replace them with locals

Correction Needed-You are correct that Greene 1, normally stationed in Leakesville, was the first ASAP unit on scene. However, since both George 1 & 2 were on calls, Greene 1 (as is ASAP's SOP's) was enroute to the county line. Greene 1 was not in Leakesville when they received the call. They were almost at the county line on New 63. A long response time? Maybe. 20 minutes? Definitely not.

As a side note, if AMR were still here, an ambulance would have to have come from Greene, Stone, or Jackson Co. I will state ASAP is lacking in several areas, but in this case, having them here (and their commitment to serve the county, even posting from Greene Co.) helped save his life.

Scooper-There was someone that provided CPR initially. I have no doubts that is the one you are referring to. I know that Joe Apker of the Lucedale PD performed CPR. I know that Davis Smith, a member of both Lucedale & Rocky Creek Volunteer Departments, was the George County First Responder that applied the AED that resulted in the shock being delivered because Doug was in Atrial Fibrillation.

A previous poster asked who signed the contract with ASAP. Paul Gardner is the one. The George County Board of Supervisors, nor the City of Lucedale Board of Aldermen had any input into this decision. His reason for changing ambulance providers was AMR asked for an increase in the subsidy the hospital payed AMR. He chose to not pay the increase, get ASAP to come here for $50,000 less. In pure supposition on my part, was he trying to find a way to finance his "Old Folks Home" currently being built. Again, just a question I have as to his motives.

http://bit.ly/1h41cwe This is a link to a WLOX story. I am sure they checked their facts. I have no doubt they missed the first person to provide CPR.

Your response? How may I correct you again?

An AED will not allow a "shock" for atrial fib nor does A-fib result in Cardiac Arrest. The Mayor would have been in V-fib or V-tach which would explain the placement of an AICD.
