I grew up with Willie Collier and Robert Collier . The killing occurred in 1971 . We were on the way to basketball practice when one of the coaches told us to go home because Willie Collier had been shot . He had the bloody towels and his name was Coach Hardy . I guess you could call it a riot , but not by real riot standards . It was mainly a march to City Hall and LPD . I was there . Then everybody proceeded to return to East Lubbock ( Dunbar area ) . Mae Simmons and E.C Struggs area . The police came and tried to disperse the crowd . There was a tank that drove through the area and through Green Fair and some guys , I think last names Lincoln shot at the cops . A day or so later they were arrested . I'll never forget that day because I saw Willie that morning and I saw him going to 3rd period and he was killed between 3rd and 4th period . I didn't know Jeff Carver personally . I don't know the reasons but rumor has it that Jeff Carver was being picked on or had been threatened prior to or that day . Rumor has it that he went home and got a gun or brought a gun to school that day . Last I heard , Jeff Carver lives in Lubbock . I know he had a son named Jeff Carver . Saw him in the paper for making Honor Roll . This was a very unfortunate incident for Willie Collier because it cost him his life . It was an unfortunate incident for Jeff Carver because he has to live with that as long as he lives . It was a Blake eye on Lubbock because it was the second year of forced bussing in LISD . My 9th grade year was the first year of bussing . We went O.L Slaton. White and Hispanic kids were bussed to Dunbar .

Dunbar High I was there that day! Mr. Roberts came over the loud speaker and told us to all go home carefully and stay there. The "school to the north" was already out. I did not understand exactly the implications, but I went home and stayed. Went back though and graduated 1973. Go Panthers!
Now I am a maroon and white wildcat, coincidence? maybe not :)

It was in 1971-- I was a Lubbock Policeman-- this was a very strange time in Lubbocks history. If you have some questions I might could answer them for you.

I was sitting around in my room in Phoenix - thinking about my cousin (Willie Ray Collier) & decided to see if there was anything on line about the shooting but there wasn't... I was actually with him when this happened... we walked in the building & Willie headed East in the building & I walked North - we had just left my home & was late returning to school... less than one minute after entering the building I heard Willie calling my name & when I looked back he was holding his hand over his chest... I grabbed him & a teacher came out to help - when we got close to the office Willie slipped from our grasp & by now the nurse was finally there... I was told to go back to my class & a few minutes later an ambulance came... shortly after that it was announced that Willie had passed away... there is more that can be said but it is difficult to relive... feel free to contact me
