Millers has great meat and they're local businesspeople. There are plenty of good local businesses: There's a new bakery on Shady avenue, Rick's General Store has a good price on ground beef this week, and you can't find better chocolate and treats then Croghan candy kitchen, Lowville producers has excellent cheese and other goodies and croghan balogna and moshers sausage...no need to buy food at wally world. I like what the guy on the radio station says about not buing your food where you buy your underwear. I avoid wally world when possible. Sorry to hear about the job losses. That stinks!

Have great fresh meat at local family stores, Nolt's, Eddie's Meat market, Miller's store. Who's to say another chain won't buy the plaza and build a new store. Since you most likely live closer to other stores, you shouldn't worry. We didn't choose for P&C to go bankrupt three times in the last 10 years. Maybe it was poor management. I don't think any of us will go without fresh meat, maybe have to go to watertown or somewhere else once a week like we did before Walmart came into our town.

Certainly going to miss the P&C for meat and sales, however some of us have to shop where we can get the best prices and judging from the crowds today I think lots of people would agree with me. And just to pass it on to anyone who hasn't shopped there Aldis has some great buys too. Maybe we will have to drive to Watertown for meat but hopefully someone else will come to Lowville and have a Great meat dept as well as other affordable goods!

What is good for goose is good for gander. Lyons Falls citizens had no help from Lewis County Legislators in attracting a grocery store, why should they help Lowville with our $$$$. I understand they have directed The Department of Economic Development to work on this. Did they lift a finger for Lyons Falls?

Too bad....that is a great number of employees that will be affected. Hopefully there will be another company that will buy the store here in Lowville....we need to have more than one store in this county to buy groceries. Walmart seems to be carrying less and less varieties of dry goods and their produce and meat is still sub-standard.
Maybe a new chain with some new additions will bring shoppers who travel to Jefferson and Oneida counties to grocery shop back to shopping in Lewis County...I think that we lose enough sales tax revenue here already. Maybe this will spur a "BUY LOCALLY" trend and we can fill the county's coffers with sales tax instead of filling them elsewhere!
something tells me that this whole thing is going to end up like the Ames and Kinneys and Mcdonalds and the lot in the square and turn out to be a bust... how long has Ames been out of buisness... and the building still remains unused.. its a shame it really is...

Why build a new building for Tractor Supply? They could have had the whole plaza. In ten years that building will be empty to.

My guess is that it was more profitable for the deveopler to build new than pay rent on the Ames Bldg plus make rennovations.

I was told by an employee from P&C that the whole building is shot. The roof is in need of replacing. The building will probably sit and eventually tore down by the village is my guess. The high rent and condition of the building is an eyesore. Too bad The county fixed up the old Kinneys but never used it. It would have made a great second hand store like the salvation army, maybe the thrift store and food pantry could have been housed there. This is just MY opinion, so you don't need to rip me a new a**hole.

It is a brilliant idea to have the thrift and pantry move together, beleive me we have been pushing for it because it is easier for the ladies who volunteer, the clients we serve and not to mention saving money on rent and utilities for 2 different buildings......BUT R.V & reed dont want to loose their money
THAT is why they appoited that idiot to run things and fired all the church ladies. Something very sinister going on down there. they should all be ashamed of themselves.

In reading the Watertown Daily Times about the Lowville P & C Store we must appreciate Eric Virkler, Economic Developer and Ned Cole, IDA Director. They make a wonderful team. Form the paper it looks like Eric is the analyst and Ned is the go-getter contact person. For a while I thought no one was working on this needed grocery store. For myself I would like Wegmans. I guess this is out of the picture. I will not do my grocery shopping at Wal-Mart. I am not buying my food where I buy my underwear.

Are you implying Mr. Virkler and Mr. Cole should get a $10,000 wage adjustment during the county wage freeze? Please don't give the idea to the legislators.

Neither should get a raise. It is like giving President Obama the Peace Prize without earning it. Lewis County can only afford one developer. Legislators you need to reduce the two economic developers down to one. Again and again the county needs to reduce expenses and taxes.

One thing is clear. Mr. Virkler sees the glass half empty, as he feels the situation is complicated and confusing. Mr. Cole sees the glass half full, as he perceives the situation is hopeful. This is from an article in the Watertown Times: http://www.watertowndailytimes.com/article/20...

IGA - Chased dust bunnies down the aisle of that store for years before it finally closed. It mostly dealt with wellies anyway...

Dollar Store - Another sh!thole that should have gone out of business the day it opened. Lost the lease to the building. Wal-Mart affected the dollar store in no way since another one opened in the old IGA building.

Showbiz Video - I do truly miss that place, and i think someone could make another one work. Same deal as the Dollar Store, owner of the building refused to renew the lease. Wal-Mart doesn't rent movies, and the Red Box didn't exist when showbiz went under.

Excuse me, but could anyone give up some examples of what the Cole and Virkler have done in the way of actual "Economic" development in the county? I mean in the way of them actively doing something, not just taking credit for it.
