Lewis County Manager Dave Pendergast received an early Christmas present Tuesday - a $10,000 raise.
The Board of Legislators approved the pay hike during its last meeting of the year.
Pendergast's salary will go up to $85,000 next year.
Board Chair Jack Bush says the extra money is for expanded responsibilities.
Along with acting as the county's budget officer, Pendergast is also overseeing the county's bus route and working on information technology.
"Well isn't that nice that the county BUDGET manager get's a $10,000 raise. Isn't he the one responsible for cutting county jobs because of budget woes.
Of course they justify it by saying that he has added duties and that is why he is getting such a hefty raise. They justified giving Sheriff Tabolt a multi-thousand dollar raise for placing him as the 911 Director which he does NOTHING to warrant the job title. The only thing he does as director of 911 is try to enforce new rules which go against Labor Board rules...i.e. trying to enforce a rule where Dispatchers are not allowed to leave their tiny cubicles during their 12 hour shifts for any reason what so ever.(lets not forget that they are allowed 15 minute breaks every four hours and a 1/2 hour lunch..which they are not allowed to leave the building for). Sheriff Tabolt is no more deserving his big raise for doing nothing anymore that Mr. Pendergast is deserving of his.
We as county tax payers should have more of a say on where the legislators choose to waste our money.

I don't understand this all. Rappaport is no longer working for the county; just how much longer will Pendergast be working for the county. Taxpayers should be extremely upset. I am. I would like to know which legislators voted this in. They need to be gone as well. Mr. Deal and Virkler must go too. A lot of dead weight on the taxpayers backs.

I'm surprised that these knuckleheads haven't come up with the idea of blowing the contingency fund on Mega Millions tickets to balance the budget. After they use part of it to give more raises to their buddies and hire a few friends or relatives first of course.

They have gone to far now. This is a complete injustice to all county workers. Giving this raise out in these times is completely uncalled for, that is between a 13-14% raise. They are asking the staffing of other offices to increase there hours worked from 35 hours a week to 40 hours with no increase in pay for those extra 5 hours per week and working them for free. In that same proposal they also told them there would be a significant increase in part of the insurance.

We have so much dead weight in our County but those are the ones that get rewarded.$85,000 for what? Why do we need both a County Manager and the Board of Legislators? This county is not that big to justify both. What happened to the years when the Legislators actually did something for the County and we had no manager.

Please Legislators, take care of your lowered payed employees and quit asking them to take paycuts, increase there co pay for insurance etc.... Those are the people that need your assistance, not someone that was making $75,000 a year.

He's going to get a pay raise for having to break it to the legislators on the 17th according to the Watertown times, that the govenor is holding 2.5 million dollars and already the county is owed 1 million. I can't copy the article, but you can read it on watertowntimes.com .. So thank goodness the Treasurer says there is enough to get us through. Who Knows, come April when the budget is due, they may say we are witholding all the money. Oh boy, then what. and Jack Bush says, Thank You, I think...merry christmas all..

My opinion was not really formed til I read Bruce Krug's take at uncovered. I think Bruce speaks for many of us, and he has the inner knowlege of his years of the Board to be a valid, reputable resource right now. There is no other way to say it, the county workforce is being told they will need to work more hours for no raise. Mr. God, who sits in the white tower (it is not ivory) gets a raise for what? Added responsibility we are being told. Your telling every employee to work more, take on more responsibility and do this with no mention of more compensation. THEN, have the audacity to give HIM a raise. What are you people thinking. We have ourselves to blame for not running more candidates against this group! Santa and the elves are not happy!

If county citizns - TAXPAYERS looked they would see pendergst is costing way more than just his wages with policys he invented. I would suggest to all districts they start looking for new re-placements for legistlator in their district for next election.

Yesterday, the county bol decided to give Mr. Pendergast a raise. This was after they passed the budget. In other words, they did not have the GUTS to put it in the budget because they wanted no questions. They DO NOT REPRESENT YOU THE PEOPLE THEY REPRESENT THEMSELVES. IF YOU ARE NOT AS MAD AS HELL NOW, YOU NEVER WILL BE. It was said that Mr. Pendergast needs to make what other managers of other county's of comparable size make. Fine how about everyone else in the county that is not up to speed with other county's. This was the same argument they raised for Rappaport several years ago. He left and the hospital is doing fine.
Mr. Pendergast, your replacable just like any of us. I do not begrudge you the raise. I have all been a fan of you take what your boss gives you. I believe the heat you will take will more than be $10,000 of stress. Your bosses ( the legislators) are hired by us.
It's time for Lewis County to realize what is going on we need people in our elected office that will represent US!!!!!!!!
These people need to go. One legislator said he voted for it because the others did. MR. Legislator you do not represent the other legislators you represent us... IT is time for you to go!!!!

The commenters that are against Mr. Pendergast raise are way all off base. I believe his raise is tied to the unemployment rate + .

she has no business correcting anyone. we all make mistakes. even her...lose is not spelled loose and loses is not looses. we all make mistakes especially when we are in a hurry. as long as you understand what they are trying to say, I guess they can get away with a mistake.
