I live in a neighborhood next to that runway, they have been clearing trees out relentlessly for the last year now. I guess they missed some. Glad no one was killed.

I'm a private pilot who lives next to the Lowell airport near Forstrom St. I have flown in and out of that airport on many occasions and know that it can be challenging. With proper planning a situation like this should never occur, but given the circumstance the pilot did an excellent job protecting his life and that of his passenger. It will be interesting to see what the FAA accident report reveals.

I went to the field tonight about two hours after the crash and it was definitely a dramatic sight. Interestingly, Flight Service (who provides briefings to pilots) was not aware of this crash at the time I was out there, nearly two hours after it happened. I'm pretty surprised that they weren't informed sooner.

WOOD 1300 said this morning that the pilot admitted that he overran the runway and didn't get up quick enough.

Glad no one was hurt.

the pilot says he only got up to 70mph. I know there must be several variables a pilot has to take into consideration on takeoff, but 70mph sounds way too low a speed to get airborne with people and their gear. Also, pilot didn't mention mechanical problems.

70 knots is typically more than enough for a light single engine plane. For example, a Cessna 172 would rotate for takeoff at 51KTS, and be at 56KTS (roughly 63 mph) at 50 feet above the ground on a proper short field takeoff....at maximum weight. The airspeed required to get off the ground actually drops a little as you drop payload weight.

Barring some un-forecast wind shear or mechanical problem, this accident will be chalked up to pilot error.

There are more than a dozen mistakes a pilot can make on takeoff. 99% of the time when they make the mistakes, it won't matter because the runway is long enough to make up for their lack of judgment or complacency. When it counts (short field), you need to do the math and follow the procedures to a T....or pay for your mistake with your life.

The pilot and passenger are lucky to be alive. I am glad nobody was hurt.
