Was reading the posts in the story about Connors Military Pay and realized that the Center Cafe was more than just a bar...its local Landmark...Whether you grew up in 40's to 2008 its the one constant in Billerica Center. The food stores have come and gone..the drug store the hair stylists the sub shops etc...but Fermoyles to those over 45 A/k/A Center Cafe to everyone under...still exists... although it has moved 3 times it's just a few doors down from where Bud first opened...but still the one beacon of my childhood still is in "the center".
I think it deserves its own thread of stories old and new...tributes to those who shared a stool and are no longer with us...and those all those memories of St Pat's day going back to Bud and Kay to super bowls with Dick and Dozier...to post funeral get togethers it has seen it all. So all of you out there...lets us in our your memories...old and new....

My days of owning a stool at the Center where with Dozier, Brad, Penny, Carol, and Diane. Witnessed many a bowling game or cribbage game, or the phone ringing and the usual question being asked.... "is ____ here?" and three heads at the bar ALL shaking NO!!!!!!!!!!

Another thing that made "the Center" a landmark is the atmosphere...unlike places like Mac's, Post and Rail, the 99's even the Glades....on a day like the day after Thanksgiving while your wife/gf was out shopping with mom, and grandma at the malls..you and dad and grampa could go to "the center" and not feel like someone is trying to push a meal on you...unlike if you went to say...Thackery's. Watch a game or two on TV and you all get home for dinner without spending half a weeks pay.

does not matter any, even though that building is a landmark and hundreds of years old, this is billerica nothing is safe, billerica has allowed so many old homes to be torn down! the 99's on the turnpike was an old stage coach stop gone seeya on and on pretty soon the oldest home in town will be a condo in mitchell estates!

Awesome to see good stuff about the Center. For me, it is hearing stories about my dad - who spent many a good time up there when he was alive....many. The guys who come in during the day are a riot - and not one of them under 70 some times. Reliving the glory days. The guy who fixed our tv, put out the fire on the porch (oops) Shoveled our driveway. Paved it the next year. So many.

From 1970 through 1975, I would walk to the Center Cafe every night after one on my sport's practice to meet my Dad for a ride home. He would say "one more game of cribbage and we will go". Well one more turned into many and we would be there until 8 0r 9 PM. Now I know why I didn't test well in school, but I learned a lot of life lessons. Kenny Buffum owned the place then. My Dad stopped drinking after I graduated from BMHS and proceeded to lose all of his friends. They kept on drinking. I learned the game of cribbage by watching the best. I moved to the west coast in the early 80's, but every time I'm back in Billerica visiting I'll drive by the Center Cafe and think of the many nights I spent there as a minor. By the way, I have never had a drink there. Maybe someday I will.

Thanks for the memories...I definitely saw my share of cribbage games.

Hey Kevster! Any idea how we can get our "Do You REmeber Billerica (Style)" Back on-line? Would really like to re-establish that group. I have posted a request to Topix Feedback. Any ideas?

Last week Jack Schmelzer came into the Center and told me his grandfather owned the place.. back when. It is the years I don't have a photo of. His father if 105 !!! and lives in Maine
Grandpa Schmelzer used to gather up the produce from farmers in Billerica and bring them into Quincy Market to sell for them. I wish I had the time to chat with him.. interesting to hear. I hope he comes Back with the Painting he says someone painted for them back then... pre-1930 I'd love to have a copy on the wall.

My grandfather would take me to Fermoyles in his Model A Ford when I was 6 years old (62 years ago) and he would get me a bag of Sandy's potato chips to eat while he had a few beers. I will be going there tomorrow for the first time for a 70th birthday party.

The place to go for last call and drugs.where the bartenders and regulars own and operate the way they want. Can't find the barmaid . Check the kitchen aka coke room.
