Tommy Ellis was the 1961 Golden Glove 175 pd. champion. He was punch drunk in his later years and when the kids yelled Ding Ding he would start punching anyone or anything around him. It was quite sad. He passed away several years ago.

He was a good soul, and a good man that didn't deserve to be harassed as he was. I've met him and will proudly give my name as I have no shame to have met him.

Ding Ding was not a punch drunk ex fighter. His disability was caused by the Korean war. I believe he had a plate in his head due to the injuries he sustained. I grew up in his neighborhood in Lowell.

I remember going downtown with friends as a kid and yelling "ding ding" like a ringside bell. He would get upset and chase us around . I wish I could have been more conciderate of him . I'm sure your long gone Mr. Ellis but please accept my apology for my actions.

It was more like 20 years ago that he passed away. He still has relatives alive and well in the area. Even radio talk show host Jack Baldwin referred to him on the air of WCAP as "Ding Ding" recently with an added chuckle. Shame on you all.
