Amongst 'testing' your memory cells with people, places, things, events, etc., the Ep has been mentioned several times especially as an after hi-school drop-in along with Brigham's, the Dutch Tea, and BC.
Yo KVOC, my mushy memory is the The Blue Moon was on Princeton Blvd a bit to the west of the Hi-Hat and across the Blvd??? I remember seeing Jerry Vale back in ____....LOL .
Bob . I do not think you will except my apology. And I do not blame you.
But for what it's worth. I offer it. And Hope you will except it.

Hello everyone:
Can someone please help me? Below is my grandfather's obituary from 1975 in the Lowell Sun. As you can see there is a mention of a restaurant he owned called the "ec". I have asked many Greek people in Lowell about this restaurant and nobody has heard of it. I'm wondering if this is a typo, and if it is a typo what was the name of the restaurant he used to own with his brother. He was 89 years old in 1975 so he is really old enough to be my great grandfather.
Page 19 of Lowell Sun , July 14, 1975
Michael Kaknes former restaurant owner BOYNTON BEACH. Michael Duka Kaknes of 2304 NW 23rd Avenue Beach Florida formerly of chelmsford died July 10 after a brief illness. Born in Greece, he was the son of the late Duka and Evanthia Kaknest Prior to his retirement Mr. Kaknes was the president of the Nashua Natural Products Company of Boston and together with his brother James owned and operated the EC Restaurant on St Lowell He was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge of Salem He is survived by his wife Thelma Warwick Kaknes two daughters: Mrs Robert Patricia Cressey of field and Mrs Armand Jane Caron of Chelmsford two sons Richard of and Robert of Bedford and sister Mrs Catherine Gogas of Medford a brother James of Mytilene Greece as well as several grandchildren.
How is Ernie Kaknes related ?? I thought a Duka Kaknes was killed in an airplane accident?? They had to be related somehow??

@ Jay

Thanks Jay. The Lowell Sun wrote EC not BC but I thought this was a misprint because Mrs. Koumantzelis told me there was BC restaurant here in Lowell. She couldn't remember the owner and does not remember my grandfather as he was many years older than her.

My grandfather was Ernie's Uncle. I believe the Duka (Douka) you're referring to was Billy's son? Or was he Ernie's son? Yes, I heard he passed in an airplane crash.

My grandfather was of the older generation his brother Emanuel Douka Kaknes came over first and then brought his brother's over afterwards.

Yes, he was Billie's son. I knew Douka and was saddened by his untimely passing. I used to go to K's Lounge downtown for lunch and knew his father, at one point in my youth I worked for Ernie at the Dutch Tea Room.

Lemme answer!
1) All three. I love to stuff my fat face.
2) sla has maybe the cougar. But he is my disciple. I tell him what to say on email. He's too stupid to get it right but he tries.
3) sla is a drug addict. Only drinks coffee.
4) sla doesn't have a clavern. He has nice kids who try to keep him out of trouble.

Bonus Round: I have 3 golf balls. Just 1 tv, because I make my wife watch whatever I want to watch on our big screen tv. I'm not home much, so she can watch her stories. When I'm not playing golf I'm out stuffing my face.

What were the names of the 2 coffee shops that all the kids went to in a.m. while skipping first period at Lowell High?? I can't seem to think of it but I can picture the table I would sit at. One was at towards the end of Middle St. and the other was across and to the right of it. Any ideas?? I hope it comes to me or else it tells me I've got some memory issues already! LOL just thought of one and it was Palmer's

I think it was the Triangle (base of the Sun building) which was on the corner of Merrimack and Middle St. Acoss the street to the right was the Plaza that we would go to in the morning for breakfast before school. I believe Palmer's was on Palmer St. It's been so long I may be mistaken but that's my best guess in remembering old Lowell. One thing for sure Lowell is not Lowell any longer.

Back in the era when Lowell was Lowell and Lawrence was Lawrence they were rival cities, not only in sports, but they each had their share of competing restaurants. Lawrence’s answer to the Epicure was the Cedar Crest which believe it or not is still in operation today. Bishop’s was on par with The Spear House and The Windsor. Lawton’s was Lawrence’s answer to Elliot’s and The Trailer and Bea’s was the mid-point stop if you could not make up your mind :-)
A lot has changed since those cities were in their hey-day and a lot of us old enough to remember those days will cherish the memories. As we can all see, time changes everything and we are in a new era, today Lowell is celebrating the presence of the 2nd largest Cambodian population in the United States while Lawrence is proud of their Hispanic population. While things do change some things remain the same, as with both cities today they are striving for betterments to allow families to be a part of a new era to live and work successfully in an harmonious atmosphere. There is no question they will succeed and we all welcome it.
