On a 4-1 vote, the Planning Board has ended a nearly three-year, sometimes contentious saga by giving its approval to the proposed Cornerstone Square "lifestyle center." The board this week signed a development agreement with Westford LC, LLC, that will enable the construction of 238,000 square feet of an upscale mix of retail, personal services, ...

A little harsh don't you think? Too many insults on these threads. I've been here 20 years and really like it. It has changed a lot in those years from no traffic lights to what we have now. From more blue collar to more yuppie. I agree that the land is zoned for this use and I am in favor of this project as a good use of the land. But I don't think developers should have a blank check. As you said get the best deal you can for the town. Sometimes--eg the Wal Mart case--the best deal means discouraging them. To Wal Marts credit they backed off. I personally don't think a dealership is the right way to go. And I think we needed a better deal with Kimballs to make the pedestrian street crossing safer and more efficient. But I am not opposed to growth. I think the town recently made the right decision on the 20 affordable units to be built.

This debacle reeks of snobbish thinking.

Upscale! wow!!!

Nothing like separating the different classes of people with "Upscale" shopping.
How about putting it over on rte. 40 instead of the Asphalt plant? Oh,no that would never do,its "Nab" you know.

I don't care if your family has been in town for 300 years. It's about the here and now. If you take a look at other towns (who will go nameless), their primary roads are littered with "FOR LEASE" and "FOR RENT". Is that, Mr 4 generations, what you would like to see in OUR town?

Oh, and try to lose the tribal mentality; it makes you look ignorant.

I completely agree. Plus, how many Gaps and Ann Taylor Lofts do people need to shop at?

I'm wondering what kind of tax breaks that project will get when few,if any shops can't afford to pay the rent.
Several years ago when companies were building their offices like there was no tomorrow, and couldn't fill them, they were given tax breaks by the town. I wonder if real estate developers get tax breaks on their unoccupied homes.

I'm not too happy about this. 110 is a mess between 4-6pm when the local company workers leave for the evening. Adding this to the mix just makes it worse. The town does not need a mall!
Westford is rapidly losing its character.

Do you ever leave the town at all? It's not the worst. Take a ride through Billerica sometime, genius. What a boob.

I love when so called "lifetime residents" of the town (aka "townies") try to disregard the opinion of people who move into the town recently or decades ago by calling them "blow ins."

Its so stupidly hilarious. Add to it that in my experiences, it is the townies who have run the town into the ground and are the most corrupt bags of feces you'll ever see.

Especially the sordid inter-family connections of some families in the town where they help each other with passing their developments and then return the favor.

I especially like how townies tend cry "blow in" when it is fighting development, but don't say the same thing about certain resident "blown in" developers when they want to turn most of Westford into gridlocked parking lot.

I totally agree, this town has some serious planning issues because a few "families" are convinced that they can stop growth. Examples: no sidewalks and no town sewage.

Good question. The car dealer is going up quickly. I assume it is delayed due to the economy. But maybe it has been cancelled. No work at Minot's Corner yet.

HI All

I'm a prospective tenant of Cornerstone Square and I think it is going to be the new wave of shopping. Have you ever gone into a mall now a days... Burington, Natick, Solomon pond, North Shore, South Shore or Emerald Square? They are all the same, it is big box corporate types that jump in with these huge developers and the tenants come and go. I work at the Natick Collection and I see stores coming and going every other month. Shopping malls don't attract diversity they just want to go up and collect their rent. Mr. Walker has given my family a chance to restart out business and Westford is not only a strategic center for tech businesses but it is also in the middle of some really well maintained communities.

Take a ride down RT 27 and look at the Giant Wayland town center going up... its almost twice the size of Cornerstone and RT 20 is only 1 lane.... I think a lot of people have misplaced hate on this topic, your saying why build a new retail center, well what else do you propose? Its going to give me the opportunity to open my business and for my family and myself to have something of our own again. Having people like myself and other smaller tenants brings traffic from all around, it makes a lot of people happy knowing that some little guys can still make it in this world and I bet you my last dollar its going to be something great because I have no doubt in my mind, failure doesn't exist in my vocabulary and thats where Robert and I see eye to eye. Its persistence that makes things happen.

Have you ever been to legacy place in Dedham or Patriot place in Foxboro? They are booming, I think that you all should be happy because this is going to bring more businesses into Westford and really push it to the next level. Actually I think the only thing missing is a nice movie thatre, or some type of arts and cultural center.

I've been following Westford for a couple of years because my sister moved there. The "Not in our Town" attitude baffles me. First, the affordable living - the comments "Oh great now all the welfare people from Lowell are going to come and be in our schools" Making me SICK to hear, as the 40B project for a 2 bedroom is a minimum income of $28K a year, No one on welfare is making that money, in fact a young teacher with his stay at home wife and baby is making that.
Now the fuss over more retail? Upset about the traffic and 'class' of people. Upscale is what Westford Wives want, but not in their town? Two things, maybe those in other towns don't want Westfordians coming HERE. Are we all to only shop in our own towns? Second, Any one of you could be in a lower income bracket tomorrow, the way things are going. Our family went from $130K a year to $40 when my husband and son got hit with health issues.. and now we qualify for "Affordable Housing" Not on welfare.
