Hobbs is in trouble with this new Police Chief, the guy is crazy, he's started his own goon squad. Calls them his CAT team, they are nothing but police officers operating outside of the law. If they don't have a reason to pull someone over than they make it up. Haven't we had enough trouble with the Police Department getting the city sued. Our commissioners don't seem to have any faith in the local people they keep bring people in from the outside to run our city. First the City Mananger, then the Chief of Police and lets not forget the City Attorney.
The Chief likes to use our local newspaper to make himself seem like some kind of hero. He thinks that the local people can't see what he's up too. He thinks that since he writes it in the paper then its fact. Does anyone know the story behind his article on recording the Judge? Seem fishy to me, boy he must have been mad at someone to rip them up in the paper like he did, just seems to me there has to be a story behind it. One of his fairytales is that he's going to close the city jail and save us lots of money. What happens to the people who are arrested and get taken to Lovington, do they get a ride home or is he just planning on having them dumped on the streets of Lovington when they are released. I don't know much about jail's but from what I can tell from the County's jail budget,$800,000 for the city jail is cheap. You always hear stories about how short we are on police officers I sure it makes sense to have them drive their prisoners all the way up to Lovington to the jail. Does this even make sense. I think he's just afraid of being in charge of a jail and is thinking of a way to make his job easier. Why do we pay this man over $100,000 a year if he doesn't want to do his job. None of the Chief's in the past has thought that it was to hard for them to run a jail. Which brings up the keep the criminals out of jail he was talking about, that just what we need in Hobbs. Take them out of the jail and put them on the streets, this must be what the hug a thug program is. I can's see the local judges falling for this, even if he said that the municipal judge is all for it and has some good ideas. If you know the Municipal Judge this doesn't even seem like him, we must have a new Municipal, because I know there is no way Judge Sloan is going for this. He keeps more criminals off the streets then any district judge.

Judging by your post here and on the other site saying to take him back, he's ruining "our" department...are you on the police department? Do you know what the CAT team was formed to do? How have they broken the law? You must have some good info if you know all this!

it seems to me like he's just trying to relocate the criminals of hobbs to lovington so he doesn't have to dill with them. for the ones that work in office but work outside the law the community will handle them. nothing negative about the force, they have great officers but i must regreat to say their are some bad ones but thats any were you go these days. The ride to lovington seems to take for ever but its not like they have anything else better to do with thier time anyways if they do close the city jail and put everyone in lovington it probably won't be long before their is a daily bus or some kind of service stops at the L.C.D.C on a daily to pick up the ones that are getting out . Just another way to make a profit one door closes and another one opens.

Has anyone here seen any discussion about closing the jail? Have your city commissioners spoken with anyone about this topic to find out what the people of Hobbs think about closing the jail? Since when is it the responsibility of a public servant to decide, on a large topic, what is in the best interest of the City of Hobbs? I think it is time that we look at who is in charge of our fair city. People are being brought into this city who have absolutely no vested interest and do not know what is the best for our city. I have done a little studying up and have seen that all the new people to our city are bringing the exact programs that they were trying to run in other cities to hobbs. I think it is time for people who really care to take a little time and start asking questions.

Do not be afraid to ask the questions that you have. We are the people of Hobbs and we will be here. This man has no intentions of staying in Hobbs therefore can in no way have all the best intentions of Hobbs in mind.

Just like the man said in the paper on Saturday, no one cares until something happens. If you have a report of people with guns at the park why don't you have a police officer stay in the area or even send out two or three? Especially, if the park was crowded with families. Seems to me that the if nothing else having the police out at the park would have scared the shooters away. We are giving the city away one job at a time. Maybe we should change the city bylaws so we can vote in commissioners from other cities.

So how are these people going to get the money to pay for the ride home?
Parking on the sidewalk seems to be a prior to the police department not watching for criminals in the parks. I read the local rag for what it's worth. Just wish they would add some real news once in a while, do we really need everything sugar coated? If someone is raped I want to know. If someone is out there knocking old ladies on the head that should be front page news.
I agree that there are some good cops who care about our community, but they must follow the command of the people who run the department. I say send him packing and get one of our local people who know the town and the people and put him/her in charge of the department. Wasn't there anyone here who could do the job. With all the good officers we have here they should have been able to find one person to step up and take charge. Heck for $100,000 a year they should have been lined up for the job. We should be able to vote for the Chief like we do for the Sheriff. We need to be in charge of our town, I for one am tired of all the crime and drugs here. Maybe we should start by voting out the judges who keep putting these guys back out on the streets. Seems our local guys in the Magistrate and City courts do alot better job than those in Lovington. Born in Hobbs and proud of it.

When you see all the recent shooting in Hobbs, your finger just has to point at the Chief of Police. The incident in the park is just one of the things that make you wonder where were Hobbs Police and why do we pay them so much if they can't do their jobs and keep the city safe. Time to call our city leaders and asks them what were they thinking, hiring some unemployed guy from another state. Hire someone who has a job, with what Hobbs can offer we should be able to get someone good. Money talks.

Whatever the Chief's flaws and good points, the shootings have nothing to do with him. Hobbs cops CANNOT be everywhere at once. They don't have time to just patrol and set at a park, they go call from to call to call nonstop. If you want a cop to stay at a park all the time you're going to need more cops than you have now.

Are you from the department that Sanders came from? What details do you know?

I am a big supporter of the police activities in Hobbs and feel that the police officers are doing a good job in general. However, policing is not a political function. It seems to me that, with the continuous changes from outside sources, the police officers continually have to change to make the new guy happy. They need to get back to policing!!! It was said that the police cannot be everywhere and that is right. But officers need to be doing the policing from the field and not from the chief's office.

It may be that policing should not be a political function but there is always politics in a police department. Perhaps there is politics in every job though?

I'd also like to hear more comments from CPD if he/she is indeed from Columbus.

Bring it on CPD, let us know what our local police officers need to prepare for. From talking with a few people that work for the department things are getting really deep. I can't believe all the stuff that they are telling me about. How is he getting away with thinking he can make up the laws to suit him. I feel for the police officers that I talked to and know that they are worried about their jobs. Tell us if he managed to get rid of the people who will not go along with him and how he did it. I'll be happy to pass the information on. You know the old saying "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" Can anyone tell me where all the other top people stand and why they don't speaking up for their people, have they no backbone?
