KNOXVILLE, Tenn.(WVLT)-- It's time for a little spring cleaning -- of your medicine cabinet.

With prescription drug abuse on the rise, a coalition of local forces wants you to get rid of unused drugs.

It's time to clean out your cabinets. "You put yourself at risk to have substance abuse in your own home, with your own children, as well as theft of your medications, if you are leaving unused, old medications lying around," said Heather Sutton, a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Drug Commission.

Sutton says recent surveys show prescription drug abuse is rampant in East Tennessee.

"About one in five teens are abusing prescription medications, and about 70 percent of those teens say they get them from their parent or grandparent's medicine cabinets," she said.

"People don't know what to do with medications so they just leave them there," said Judy Clabough, the community outreach coordinator for Blount Memorial Foundation.

This weekend, law enforcement and other community agencies around the region are taking the drugs back. You can "spring clean" your medicine cabinet and know the pills won't fall into the wrong hands.

"Folks can clean out those cabinets and get those meds turned into us," said Clabough.

The medications are incinerated, keeping them out of the environment. Just bring the pills in the bottle, and they'll do the rest.

"There will be no questions asked, they can just turn them in, and once we take custody, or law enforcement takes custody, then they'll be protected until they can be destroyed," said Clabough.

The Blount Memorial Foundation says a new Drug Free Communities Grant will help them pay for the event, and other prevention programs.

"It's very important that people understand that its the easy access to these medications that are contributing to some of these problems that we're seeing," said Sutton.

Since November 2008, eight of these type events in Knoxville have collected more than a ton of medication.

You can also bring vitamins, over-the-counter medicines, even pet medicines. Folks can recycle unused sharp medicines, such as epinephrine allergy injections and pricking devices still in the packaging.

Hell no! Why do you think they want these used pills? They want to cull out the narcotics and take them theirselves. Another big blunder by the Metro Drug commission. Do you trust the DEA or government?

Yeah sure the pills will be incinterated. After the pills are replaced with Rolaids or Bufferin or something like that they'll incinerate some phoney pills then keep the narcotics for themself.

I really believe that the medications will be destroyed properly.Remember the old 911 bldg back in Scott Mannings days? "Destroyed" medication was from floor to ceiling. Like chic said just allow me to pick them up and I will be more than happy to destroy them....for the greater good of course.....keep our fine upstanding community upstanding. BULLSHIT

I have a bad case of diahrea and I lost my job and no longer have insurance. The doctor used to perscribe me hydrocodoon to take twice a day and it helped me a lot. Now I dont have diahrea medicine anymore a Peptol Mismuth or Imhodium doesn't work and cuntsipates me so I would appreciate any hydrocodone or pergocets it would help me from spending hallf a day in the bathroome.

Blount Memorial Hospital should form a coalition to take care of their patients. After spending the last 3 days at the hospital with an ill family member, I don't see how they are allowed to stay open. Unless you just need someone to put a band-aid on, go somewhere else.

I don't understand why everyone thinks this is such a joke. We need more programs like this. So to all you idiots that are against this, get off drugs and quit being pissed that they are taking them off the streets!!! People hate hearing the truth, so they bark off their stupid comments that make no sense at all. I want all these druggies and drugs out of our community and away from our children. You would think others would want the same thing but I guess if your on drugs the this topic gives you something else to complain about. Grow up and stay off drugs!!

Do you trust Blount Memorial, the Metropolitan Drug Commission, doctors, or the cops? Not me. Look how many doctors, cops, and medical people are corrupt. Lots of money in the drug trade if you have drugs that need disposed of just flush it down the toirlet yourself. I can see right through these drug disposers intentions,$$$$$ and mucho buzzes.
