After the latest unprovoked attack by the pit bulls in Mechanicsville, should the state outlaw keeping these animals in neighborhoods or even outside in an area that cannot be climbed or dug out of? Who would determine the neighborhood's safety? Should the owners be required to show proof of training and carry a minimum of one million dollars liability to cover injuries and possible death? It really doesn't get to people when it happens somewhere else BUT when it's your child or loved one being wheeled off to surgery to repair dog bite damage, it tends to hit home! What's the answer and what should be done before it happens again?

The breed as a hole should be destroyed they were breed to fight and kill it is what they were made to do. If your are a felon it is a felony to own a vicious dog which this breed is considered that. That is far as the law goes I dont like them eaither and if I see one walking around with no owner or no lead it will be shot you can shoot anything if you fill it be a treat to you or your family and yes I consider that breed of dog being anywhere around my kids to be a treat that I will take care of.

I agree the best thing to do with them is shoot them.

no they shouldnt be shot. i have a pit and she has never tried to bite anyone. they are not mean dogs. it all depends on how they are treated. i dont care what kind of dog it is. If it is mistreated then they are mean.

You have a breed with the propensity to turn in a moment and do serious damage to whoever is near regardless of his former behavior or training. Your dog is a ticking time bomb and you can't see the timer. It's not if, but when. Be sure your homeowners insurance knows you have this dog on your premises and have coverage enough for a six figure incident. Don't risk your financial future for a dog.

All that breed of dog was created for is fighting, its in there blood, its all they did for hundreds of years. If one comes on my property I cut it in half.

The people who are spelling all their words wrong and using incorrect grammer are the ones spewing the ignorant BS on here. I'm guessing that that they not only lack a degree but have never even been around dogs. There is no such thing as an 'evil' breed. Pit bulls are used in dog fighting because of the power of their jaws. If you think they are 'natural' fighters do some research on how the thugs 'train' them to fight. If a dog is mistreated, inbred, or denied its needs (which can include food, shelter and yes social interaction) it can be aggresive and dangerous. The news doesn't report on other breeds because a dachshund bite isnt as 'glamorous' and the generally ignorant public doesnt care about those because they don't do as much damage. Maybe if you took some time to educate yourself instead of reading threads like this you would know the true nature of Pit Bulls. The humane society and SPCA don't stand up for the breed b/c secretly they are killing machines and they feel like playing a joke on society...they stand up for them because people like you are dangerous.

I agree. I have a pit bull and she's a big baby. A golden retriever can be vicious if not socialized correctly. These close minded people need to do their research.

Agree with you!! Ban the deed, not the breed. And yes, a Golden Retriever can bite also.

Blacks are disproportionately responsible for rapes, robbery's and murder. That's a "breed" we need to look at banning. White trash pillheads should also be banned just so you know my hatred of human garbage rolls both ways. Wow! who let that 2000 pound elephant into the room?

In the 60's Rin Tin Tin was the Dog superstar and German Shepards were the dogs that bit everyone. The seventies was the era of the Doberman (and sharks due to Jaws). The Eighties brought scorn to the Rottweiler. Now it's the Pitbull. A breed that was once so revered that "Our Gang/ Little Rascals" had Petey as a companion. A breed that was the RCA Victrola dog. A breed that produced Sgt. Stubby, the most decorated dog in U.S. Military history. A dog that was referred to as the Nanny dog due to it's protectiveness over children. A dog so loyal to it's owner that it will do WHATEVER IT"S OWNER WANTS IT TO DO. Enter the era of Redneck White trash dog fighters/ meth makers and Black/ Hispanic gang banger dirtbags. They have taken such a noble animal and with the help of a perverse media intent on persuading a gullible public that every attack is a "pitbull" or "pitbull mix". Wonder what happened to all those Shepards, Dobies, and Rotts (not to mention sharks?). I guess my general view is Libertarian in nature. I say live and let live. You can swing your fist as much as you want. Hit my nose and it's on. As long as my dog has not hurt anyone, you have no grounds to ban anything. If any dog hurts an innocent unjustly, the owner is responsible just like any crime your child may commit. Some of you turds that are so quick to ban better watch out. Something you enjoy may be next on someone's ban list. I once bought into the same media hype as many of you. I said I'd never own a Pitbull. I now own two and have never been more happy with any breed of dog. I have been bitten though, by a Scottish terrier.

I consider it a TREAT to be around my kids too! I feel they are safe from child molesters and lunatics that would attack one of God's creatures without provocation.

It is the owners that need to be banned.

It is not the fault of the dog, it is man. This breed is known for nothing but fighting and harm brought to other animals and sometimes children and adults. I do think if anyone knowingly owns a breed that is specifically known for the harm they do, they should be made to carry multi million dollar liability insurance. I do know some insurance companies will not write a policy that has this dog breed. Of course, after saying this, I realize it's not the responsible owners that do the damage in the first place, so forget everything I just said, except it's the owner, not the breed!

NO, but the owners should be prohibited without passing a credible test of brain function and IQ over their shoe size.

I have no problem with a person owning any breed of dog they want. I think the whole issue could be settled by amending the law to regard the pet owner as being personally responsible for their pet's actions. For instance if you own a pit bull or a poodle and it is not kept properly contained and bites someone off of your property, than you should be charged with assault.

It's really not that hard to properly house and control a dog, and if a person doesn't do that, than they should be held criminally negligent for the dogs (or the owners really) actions.

I don't agree that these dogs should be banned. Its all in how they were treated & taught. Where I live right now we can't have pets but if we could I would have 2 a male & a female.

Pitbulls banning is wrong. These dogs act or behave the way they are trained. It's the idiots out there that want to mistreat these dogs & use them for dog fighting so naturally they will react that way. I can't have pets where I live but if I could I would have one for sure.
