Three Eastern Kentucky Counties Poorest in Nation

The Daily Yonder found that in 2009, 17.6 percent of the population in rural America lived in poverty, according to an analysis by the Census Bureau. When all the counties in the United States are ranked by rate of poverty, Kentucky has three with the highest rates. They are Martin County with a poverty rate was 45 percent, making it the seventh highest in the United States; Clay County, which had 43.3 percent living in poverty; and Ousley County, which had 41.4 percent. Magoffin County has an unusually high rate of unemployment but did not make the top 10 on the list. The poorest county in the United States is Zieback County, South Dakota, with a poverty rate of 62 percent.

This is really sad. I would like to see research done as to why these counties are in this situation.

with that knowledge why would one not try to better themselves and get out instead of sitting around trying to start a pity party?

They should just overthrow their government, as prescribed in Kentucky's Constitution, Section 4.

Eastern Kentucky is known for being the poorest in the whole country. 15 of the 100 poorest counties are in E Kentucky. That's the "trailer park of AmeriKKKa", it's been called. I'm just lettin u know what people are sayin, and even though there's lots of poverty, doesn't seem like many of the adults are concerned, or if they are, they dont have a plan to get things fixed. So...

I don't see why people wouldn't be concerned about things like this..probably because they aren't going through it. They don't give a shit.

According to Liberals Chicago is over flowing with crome because their poverty rate is so high.

Eastern Kentuckys poverty rate is high and not the crime capital of the US.

Why is poverty always blamed on folks who live in mobile homes and don't work? Just because a person lives in a mansion doesn't make one a better person. For instance, if you earn $14 per hour, pay $500 a month in medical insurance not to mention have utilities , you might as well say there's nothing left to save but the coins remaining from the dollars spent. Every one is not born with a silver spoon. It's like country living versus city life and suburban living. Lack of jobs, education, and deficits in government can create poverty. This country is bankrupted, impoverished as well. If the taxpayers' weren't contributing to the federal government , it could possibly be taken over. Yet, Fools ignore this. A low wage earner is better than a no wage earner no matter how poor the person is.

You have options.Stay where you are where things never change(I know from living there since the 70's)OR move like I and many others have done to find a better way for yourself.A better way of life is out there, you just have to leave Louisa and make your way.Yeah I know youre all glad I left etc.etc.and I am very happy I did.
