I just wanted to know if anyone else has ever been turned down for emergency room care at three rivers medical center?I do not have any kind of medical coverage nor do i have a family doctor, for those reasons,i never, ever go to a dr.or hospital unless i am really sick & can't treat myself at home.I've been sick for over a week & finally went to the E.R there. They took my information, let me wait in the waiting room for over an hour then finally called me back. That nurse checked my blood pressure & temperature then put me in a room to wait on the Dr.The dr.came in & asked me some questions & sent me back for a scan of my head.As soon as i came back to my room, another nurse came in & said that where i didn't have any insurance that i was required to pay $100.00 before i could be treated.Being that i was broke,i just had to leave with no treatment at all.I just think that it's sad when a person is really sick & the e.r doctors same as tell you that if you don't have $100.oo,then you just have to stay sick.My sickness is that i have had a bad cold for over 2months,for a week my head has been hurting so bad,i get dizzy, sick to my stomache,& can't hold my eyes open.So now i am trying to diagnose my own self with the help of the internet & hoping i can call around to family members and locate some antibiotics for myself.Just wondering if this has ever happened to anyone else!

They have been known to do that in the past..I went in one time for an xray, and I had a bill that I had been paying on and still owed $25.00...I was lying in the emergency room and a lady came in to collect the money before they would treat me!Needless to say, even though I have insurance,I wouldn't go into that place!!! It is a joke!!!

Ok....it is not trmc's fault that you have never found a family doctor. There is a clinic right across the river for low income that could have helped you with your cold. No matter what you expect healthcare is not free. Hospitals have to make money to stay a float and with Trmc being a "for profit hospital" it will be costly there. Do yourself a favor and find a family dr. and try not waiting 2 months before seeking care next time.

First off,Nobody said that it was the hospitals fault that i didn't have a family doctor,Second of all,I had no clue about the clinic across the river,third-WHO THE HELL SAID ANYTHING ABOUT IT BEING FREE?I recently paid off a bill to the same hospital from a past surgery so.....I only posted this thread because i had never heard of any hospital being allowed to turn a person down for treatment, just because i went to the e.r,doesn't mean i had no plans of paying for the visit I just didn't have the money at the time to go anywhere else.As for me and when i go to a doctor,is clearly up to me for MY own reasons.I was simply trying to find out if others knew of their new change, then you have to come on here and be a smart-*ss about it.You must be one of the humpty-dumpty lookin nurses that works at that hospital, huh? With all the law suits against that hospital, you'll be out of a job soon. How would you like to be very sick and broke at the same time and get told "we can't help you"?If it were a child in there, with no insurance,it would be the same deal.I personally think that it's wrong, and when more people start getting this kind of treatment or not treatment from them, the place will go under!

Some of you people with a medical card just go to the emergency room to be going I think. You should be able to go to a Dr's Office. let the real people with Emergencies go to the hospitals. and you people with no insurance go to much you are raising our insurances by doing this. Stop it!

No hospital can refuse you medical care for any reason. It is the law. Get a lawyer and sue them. It is in the patient bill of rights.

If only everyone followed the law, it seems that you need to wake up and look at the real world where normal people live in.

That is what I thought.Well I'm waiting for them to try to bill me for the test that they ran on me,which i left right after & never got the results of.I'm planning on speaking to a lawyer who is a friend of the familys. Thanks for your comment,it seems that everyone else on here has good insurance & look down on a person for going to the E.R once in a blue-moon!I don't care about anything bad that anybody has to say on here,I simply wanted to see if this had happened to anyone else.

They are REQUIRED to treat you whether they ever get payment for it or not.
I am glad that healthcare is a RIGHT finally in the U.S.
EVERYONE should have access to affordable, quality healthcare.

but there are some of the people who go to the hospital just to get their fix if you know what I mean.

I know these two brothers who are alway going to Emergency room. and they always call the ambulance so this hurts the people who have to pay for when they go to the hospital not right.
they just go all the time even when they could go to a regular Dr. office instead. This needs to change.

you can speak with a lawyer but I doubt it would do u any good.. A hospital is required to provide care if deemed emergent. If I am not mistaken they can turn you away for something like a common cold that can be treated elsewhere.. If you were told u needed to pay up front then usually it means u have a outstanding bill in which you haven't been paying. when I say outstanding it will usually be thousands of dollars. Find a good family doctor and don't to an emergency room for common cold.

I have never been asked anything about a bill at a hospital. That is the way it should be. Treat first, bill later.

Well,I'd just like to know how a doctor knows if it's emergent or not emergent when he doesn't even check you out.As for the going to the E.R for common cold remark, read my first post.I had cold symptoms for a long while, but the main reason that i went to the E.R was because I had a headache that nothing would help, severe dizziness & feeling drained.I had a cold before all my other trouble started and I didn't go to the E.R for the "common cold".This is what i can't understand the most-When the doctor talked to me about my headache,he asked if i had any family history of Brain Tumors or Brain Annurisms,I told him "Yes,my brother passed away at the age of 27 from a Brain Annurism.Thats when he ordered that i have the test ran on my head,i can't remember the name of it,but it was like an x-ray.As soon as the woman did the test, the other nurse told me to pay or they couldn't treat me.So,Why did they let me fill all the paperwork out up front(which was proof of no health coverage),put me in the room, and mostly run tests on me that i didn't get the results of?Alot of people do go to E.R's 2 or 3 times a month.Me,i maybe go once a year,if that, and when i do go,it's because i'm really sick and worried about what's going on.I agree that I do need to find myself a family doctor, and am working on that. But that day,i had no family doctor,no money, was sick and needed a Drs.help.I can't help what anybody else thinks of this, all i know is that to me,it just was not right.
