I was stuck in this backup today. Took me 3 hours to get from Scotts Valley to Los Gatos. It was absolutely excruciating.

wasnt there a cycle wreck yesterday too??? the percent of psycho cycle riders vs psycho car drivers far outnumber the cars...I love motorcycles...as long as they dont ride as if to clip my mirror, rev their exhaust next to me, cut me off, or lane split when unnecessary as traffic is moving just fine.

That makes four motorcyle DOA accidents in the area this week. I never had much interest in riding those things on the freeways, especially after a couple of guys that I knew bought the farm on Highway 17...

An idiot split lanes on us several years ago on the way to a concert at the Shoreline Ampitheatre. I could have swatted his helmet with my bear hand because he was that close to the car.

Look what happened to the deaf guy who split the right lane with a truck on Mission Street. He's dead too...

I was right there with you...except I am seven months pregnant and had a two year old and a puppy in the back seat...talk about excruciating. It is horrendous what happened, but as I was driving on 17, through Scotts Valley I was passed by three motorcyclists, one that had a passenger on the back and it looked as if they were racing, they had to have been going at least 85-90 mph and were weaving back and forth between cars. I mumbled to myself about their stupidity and prayed they wouldn't kill themselves riding like that because I knew that it would snarl traffic and I would be stuck having to pee with a hungry, whiny 2 year old...of course, it sounds harsh for me to say that now, after the fact, when someone actually did die, but people need to be more careful on highway 17. I send my prayers out to the families of those involved and I realize that there are much worse things than sitting in traffic for 3 hours.

Lindsey god bless you for seeing both sides of the coin.

and never think about the people's families.

On Friday a mad lady on a white car got infront of me, stopped on her brakes for seconds and then move to the right lane and flipped her finger to me, I totally ignored her while she kept stucking her face and finger out of of her car. I hope she reads this note and see herself as a dangerous person on the road and learns to control herself and change her behavior with people.

If a bicyclist is riding down the street and its unsafe to pass him you hold back until it is safe to do so. You don't run him over...

I was on Highway 17 too with my twin boys for nearly 3 hours in this back up. I too witnessed so many motorcycles flying through the traffic. Everyone needs to try to be a safer driver: motorcyclists and cars!

Very sad and condolences to the family.

P.S. MY COUSIN WASN'T DRIVING RECKLESSLY! HE WAS HIT BY A TAIL GATING VAN THAT WAS TOO DAMN STUPID TO STOP IN TIME. THAT DAMN VAN HIT HIM, THREW HIM OFF HIS BIKE, AND THEN RAN HIM OVER. ALL YOU JERKS TALKING SMACK, STOP AND THINK ABOUT THAT FOR A QUICK SECOND!

You have ur facts wrong Ana...prior to this tragic accident, Felipe and his buddies were seen splitting the lanes at approximately 85 - 90 mph as they headed south on hwy 17 ...driving recklessly in this fashion on a motorcycle is tantamount to do a death sentence...so sad...

Professor, you have your facts wrong as well. These bikers were not splitting traffic nor going 85-90. I had the group of bikes in my view from almost the Summit and I was going the speed of traffic which was around 50-55 miles an hour. I witnessed this horrific accident from the slow lane and from what I could see, no one was at fault. Highway 17 is a very dangerous road and is one that you can never take your eyes off of what is in front of you. The traffic came to a sudden slowdown and the bikes locked up their brakes which cause them to slide an highside and threw the riders of the bikes. The individual who was ran over was thrown into the slow lane and happened to end up underneath the Van that was driving next to it. This accident was not caused by a tailgator either. This was a horrific accident and I do wish the family and survivors the best.

Witness, thank you. It was an accident, plain and simple. Splitting lanes, speeding nor reckless driving had anything to do with this tragedy. A young man lost his life, 3 others injured and hospitalized with one in critical condition. A community of families heartbroken. I am one of those family members. I wish people would think before they write such mean and thoughtless comments. They should be ashamed.

Lulu, as I said, I was most unfortunate to witness the crash and aftermath. I was wondering how the young lady involved was doing. It looked pretty horrid and I do hope she is ok and she will be in my prayers.

Witness, your kind thoughts and prayers are very much appreciated. Yes, her injuries are severe. Our young lady was riding with her husband, who was also injured. She is in critical condition, has been through 2 surgeries for her legs. Her husband has been by her side since his release from the hospital. Just keep sending kind thoughts and prayers for her. Felipe, the young man that we lost was a new father. His wife and baby where at home at the time of the accident. His son will turn 1 year old next month.

A memorial fund has been set up for his wife and son. All interested please send donations to Felipe Loza Memorial Fund, 22273 Victory Dr., Hayward, CA 94541. With much appreciation.

Witness:

I think you sum it up well it was just a horrible accident. If you see the pictures that were posted you can clearly see the skit marks that resulted from the brakes being locked apperantly due to the traffic being stopped ahead.

Felipe was my cousin and it's sad that he wont be around anymore. For those who posted comments relating to the amount of time you spent sitting in traffic, shame on you.

The motorcycle he had was a cruiser (Harley) not a crotch rocket so I doubt he was being reckless that wasn't his style. Felipe was a beloved son, husband, father, brother and cousin. He was a very outgoing and spirited person. He will without a doubt be missed by everyone that knew him.

To my aunt and my uncle, sorry for your loss. The only that can console you is the fact that Felipe is now in Heaven.

Rest in Peace Cousin Felipe,

Being a rider for many years myself this sort of news always upsets me. Riding a motorcycle is something that you love and have a passion for. I am sure Felipe was a good and careful rider as would be any new father with so much to live for. People, in general, need to calm down on the road and please people...look for motorcycles and all other living beings that my share the road either out of neccesity or accident. God Bless your family Felipe, may God wrap his loving arms around you and comfort your loved ones. Remember that to die doing something you love is a better way than most. Speedy recovery to all involved.
