St. Paul Baptist Church Votes To Retain Rev. Joel Anthony Ward As Pastor

Much of the property owned by the 100-year old St. Paul Baptist Church-valued at upwards of $10 million ten years ago, has been sold or is in foreclosure. Over the last year and a half, its pastor, Rev. Joel Anthony Ward has been arrested for the infliction of injury on a child (his own), was placed on probation; had a restraining order filed against him by a former choir director with whom he had an affair that began while he was still married; was ordered by an L.A. Superior Court Judge to surrender his guns; and confessed from the pulpit that he might have fathered a child out of wedlock.
The circumstances surrounding the church and its decline from one of the city's most popular black churches to a waning membership of less that 100 have led to one of the biggest scandals in L.A.'s African-American church community.
Yet, in a surprising turn of events the remaining members of the 100-year old church, voted 55-37 to retain Ward as pastor of the once landmark Baptist congregation.
"I'm in shock", said third generation member, Dominique Bell. "Because I'm one of the few young adults there, I'm like what are these people thinking!
"To some extent there are some elderly people who are too old to fight and think that if he leaves, we're going to lose everything, instead of looking at it as a chance to rebuild the church and I don't know if the deacons felt intimidated to speak but they never said anything. Four or five people at the meeting said that was their last day there."
According to Bell, a 22-year old college student who has not decided whether or not she will stay at the church, most of those voting were women.
"We don't have that many men in the church anymore and half of the women there are mesmerized by him. For the past two weeks he has made it seem like the vote was about his infidelity and that was not the case. The church is in foreclosure. "
Those in the pastoral community have been reluctant to comment on the story, but many believe that a reevaluation of ministry is long overdue.
"Where God is present, fruit is born, " said Mark Whitlock, Pastor of Christ Our Redeemer A.M.E. Church and of the innovators of USC's Passing The Mantle Program, aimed at teaching pastors the business of community development. "An absence of God's presence leads to decay and debauchery.
"Criticism of the post-modern church is that we have fallen in love with pulpit rock star personalities and not the presence of Jesus Christ. It's time to re-evaluate the meaning of ministry."
Tarshia Rogers, the 38-year old woman who sought and received a restraining order against Ward, and went public with her story of verbal and emotional abuse as well as their longtime affair, now attends services at another church and says she's terminated the pregnancy.
"A lot of people don't understand why I came forward, but it was for my own cleansing in order to move on," Rodgers said.
Ward, however, is stalwart.
"Everything that's been said has been one-sided, but time will tell," Ward stated in a telephone interview just days after the vote. "I was voted pastor for life in 1998 and I could never be voted out, only dismissed.
"It's time to move from this issue. I have a congregation and school to handle and there are other pastors with bigger issues than this."

Is this the Pastor who is a convicted Child abuser running the Joel John Scholastic academy in Los Angeles, where he is driving kids on a bus illegally and the teachers don't get paid on time. Someone told me he just bought his girlfriend Angela Hackworth from Testimonial Church of God in Christ a new car. And this church is in forclosure. St. PAuls baptist church

In response to Betsy's comment. Funny how it is always comments like "Someone told me" that get into print. "Someone normally turns out to be "No one" To set the record straight, the church is not in foreclosure. You need to tell "Someone" to check their facts. Secondly, what the pastor or anyone else does with their own money is their business not yours or mine.

Well the someone is this wacko Pastor himself as he announced it in service for all to hear. Yeah what he does with his money is his business, but he has none and steals the church's money which is already in debt. You must be the wacko Pastor, I hear you are best thing since Jesus, NOT!!

In response to Columbus's comments, I am a member of the trustee board and thusly would be aware if SPBC was in foreclosure. You will be happy to know that the church is not in foreclosure.

Secondly Ms Rodgers did have a restraining order filed against the pastor to keep him away from her. She wanted to keep him away from herself so much that he had a restraining ordr filed against her this past week to keep her away from his places of employment and home. Draw your own conclusions on who is chasing who. There was an order to surrender all guns. If anyone cared to do a followup, the police found no guns on any premises controlled by Pastor Ward.

The pastor was convicted of inflicting injury to his own child and placed on probation. He spanked his son. According to reports there was no great bodily injury proven. I don't know about you but i was spanked as a child and it taught me to behave. The judge chose to err on the side of caution and no fault can be found in that ruling by me. If more children were spanked less of them would be in jail or in tombs.

It is true that the church's membership is declining. This is due both to members leaving for various reasons and to the passing away of a large number of older members. Since the community has changed from African-American to Hispanic, the opportunity to add new mambers has diminished.

Any active member of the church would not have been surprised that the pastor was not dismissed. The vote went pretty much as anticipated with a clear majority favoring the retention of the Pastor. The vote was taken so that the church's voice could be heard and the nay sayers could finally shut up and stop whining to the church's other leadership. As for the deacons being intimidated, I for one wasn't and based on the personalities of the other members of the deacon board I don't think any of them were either. A meeting has certain rules and none of them were violated. I had a copy of the Robert Rules of Order at the meeting just in case there were any questions.

There are not many men in our church but that is not unusual as most the majority of most black churches are made up of women members. Women seem to have a difficult time getting the men in their lives to attend church with them.

Pastor Whitlock's comment are with merit and all pastors should examine themselves in this regard to see if they are falling short.

Ms Rodgers is quoted as saying she terminated the pregnancy. This would normally be a private matter but since she has aired her situation in public shouldn't she at least prove this statement with a bill or statement from the medical facility that performed the proceedure? It has been stated by members close to her that she told them she had her tubes tied after the birth of her son. While it is pssible to become pregnant after this is done. It is highly unusual.

Ms Rodgers has her reasons for the actions that she has taken and I have my opinion. It is not my place to attack her or her reasons but merely to correct misinformation and to ask legitimate questions to give another point of view.

Until it is proven that the pastor has done something illegal or violated the church by-laws we need to stop this. Members have decisions to make and it comes down to deciding whether they believe in Rev. Ward's ministry or not. if they don't than they need to take the next logical stop and stop creating animosity between themselves and the members that do believe in the ministry. This is one man's opinion.

I am the Chief Financial Officer of the Saint Paul Baptist Church. The allegations about Pastor Ward's supposed theft of church money is patently false. We have audits every year of the previous year's finances and any thefts or irregularities would surely surface. Additionally, Pastor Ward does not know where the Church's checks are stored, all checks are written by a computerized financial system therefore all checks are accounted for nor does he have the combination to the Church's safe where the petty cash is stored. Monthly reports are generated by the financial system documenting each Sunday's offerings and each month's expenditures with a list of all checks written for the month itemizing to whom, what budget item is charged, the date and the amount. When Pastor Ward was called to Saint Paul in 1997, Saint Paul had approximately $2,000,000,in the bank, the church edifice, a parking lot across the street from the Church and the parsonage in which he lives. Under his leadership we purchased 3 multiple unit apartment buildings, commercial property, and single family homes. In 2003, the properties were mortgaged to construct a 13 classroom/nba sized gymnasium high school for grades 7-12. Our first graduating class was in 2006 when 5 young black men graduated and all matriculated to 4 year universities, this year's class included 5 students including the first young lady to graduate Joel John Scholastic Academy. Some properties have been sold, but we are not in foreclosure. We still have a sizable real estate asset inventory on our balance sheet including commercial property, the high school, and multiple and single family dwellings.
It is unfortuate that a personal relationship gone bad could deteriorate into these incredible allegations, but what I find incredulous is the reaction of the Christian community. Jesus Christ has forgiven all of our sins, you know yours, I know mine.
In reference to the Pastor's remarks about fruit, there are many black church's in the area of Saint Paul that are now sharing their church's with Latino Churches to allow them to keep their church doors open. The demographics have changed drastically over the last 30-40 years and there are no longer the young African American middle class families to draw from in this community as there were in the glory days of the 50's,60,s and even the 70's. Why do you think the Los Angeles Sentinel moved to the Crenshaw area. I believe that they saw their constituency moving and decided to move with them. To those of you who wish to judge my pastor sight unseen, why don't you bring your curiosity to Saint Paul one Sunday at 10:30 a m and see for yourself, rather than taking someone elses' opinion. There is always more than one side to any story. May God bless and keep you is my prayer.

The actions of this Pastor, like so many others in the headlines today are morally apprehensible. Who cares about the woman, Rodgers. She has her own issues for staying in a relationship with someone that long and they were both married. Rodgers however is not Pastoring people, this Rev. Ward is. She got her restraining order and he followed suit, I‘m sure as a tactic to make himself look good. According to the articles there was taped conversation mostly threats, I would have gotten a restraining order as well and would care less if my attacker got one. The Pastor made the threats, she didn’t’ so I doubt if she cares he has a restraining order. But she was stupid enough to be with him eight years so who knows.

Regarding the tape, he initially told the reporter who questioned him about it, That was a private conversation between me and someone I was close to. She did not have my permission to make that tape. That is an illegal tape.A few seconds later he changed his mind and told the reporter,“It wasn’t me”. Hmmm

The reporter questioned him about his foul mouth and he changed his mind yet again, responding:“I was provoked. You didn’t hear what she was saying to me”.

Sounds suspect to me.

Men and women lie everyday, but a tape doesn’t. This man is foul and his spirit rotten to the core. Any one who is following this kind of ungodly leadership, yourself included, is suspect as well and will have to answer to God for allowing this kind of behavior to go on in a place of worship. There is culpability on the part of parishioners as well, either knowingly or unknowingly. This is the house of God; it is called upon to serve people and if or when the shepherd becomes no good, than the members are just as responsible for what follows as the shepherd When you turn your back on corruption you are condoning the corruption.

This Pastor Ward is either in some type of bizarre denial or his conscience is devoid of all life, spirituality or feeling. Such people are called reprobates. They are unable to think beyond the flesh in general and themselves in particular. Again Ms Rodgers pregnancy is mentioned. You say “This would normally be a private matter but since she has aired her situation in public shouldn't she at least prove this statement with a bill or statement Prove to whom and for what. She is not the issue. She will have to answer to God for all she has done in all of this as well. But maybe if she were sitting under a Pastor who is not so brazen with his immorality, she could have conducted herself better. Just my opinion. The person with the greatest responsibility (the pastor) is what makes this situation disgusting, If he were a true man of God, he would at least take a leave of absence to get him self right.

Yes I too was spanked, one of which led to my father being questioned by my school, but he was not arrested. I work with children in my profession and I know what degree a spanking would have to be for the police to be involved and subsequently a conviction with a penal code that is great bodily harm or death to a child, according to Betty Pleasants article. You say the members leave for various reasons. What are they, if its the Pastor then this is what I am talking about. Have you asked them to find out what they are? There are churches all over this city that are full of men. Sounds like excuses to me for following a man that should not be leading cattle, let alone people. We are all entitled to our opinion. We are also responsible for the choices we make in where we worship and what goes on in those churches. I have a problem understanding why people sit under pastors whose lifestyles don’t line up with the gospel they’re preaching.
As for those blind followers who say “touch not my anointed one…” For the record, if we be in Christ and are new creatures then, WE ALL ARE ANOINTED. There are no “special anointing” that’s expressly for Pastors, prophets etc. The same anointing they have we have also. That anointing helps us to carry out that which God has mandated us to do. We’re supposed to share the gospel with the world. How can that happen when the world sees us as a laughingstock????? The body of Christ is a joke to the world! However, those who have self-appointed themselves like Rev Ward, Thomas Weeks, etc. are now being exposed.

By the way I have visited St. Paul under, Rev Lefal and Rev Ward and I have seen and heard for myself why people leave from under his ministry

My final words are people need to be careful who they sit under and call Pastor.

God Bless all of you.

Betsey, you continue to talk about these allegations as if you have first hand knowlege of the occurrences. Are you aware that the LAPD, L A County District Attorney, Pastor Ward's Probation Officer and supervisor and a judge from the Los Angeles Superior Court all investigated the tape and determined that it was not credible.
I am not aware that anyone can appear before a judge and obtain a restraining order "just because", it is my understanding that there must be a burden of proof. Therefore, whether you believe it or not a judge determined that Pastor Ward's request for a restraining order met the burden of proof established by the State of California.
Pastor Ward has asked for forgiveness from Jesus first and his church second. My bible tells me there is only one unpardonable sin and that is rejection of Jesus Christ, all other offences are forgiven. Now, if Jesus Christ forgives, who are we to refuse to forgive. Are we superior to Jesus? I submit to you that God knows all, is everpresent and is all powerful, He knows the potentiality of every potentiality knowing all of us before we were formed in our mother's womb.
We have voted to support the ministry of Pastor Ward, and unless the Holy Spirit directs us differently we will continue to. We are students of the bible, we know that God uses imperfect people to preach/teach a perfect gospel for His glory. We study under Pastor Ward, and many of us study independently also, so we know the difference between his opinion and what "thus saith the LORD". I suppose I am curious to know why you care? Why are you so outraged about our Pastor and our following the direction of the Holy Spirit? I refer you to Galatians 6:1 & 2 and pray for God's continued blessing upon you and yours.

I am not aware that anyone can appear before a judge and obtain a restraining order "just because", it is my understanding that there must be a burden of proof.” I guess she had one then.

Let me state how I’m involved with this. I’m a friend of Tarshia's have been for over 30 years. I know her family & her husband. I also attended St. Paul back in the day. My sister told me there was an article in LA Focus so I decided to look and see if I could find it online. I started to call T and tell her about this, but I was just at her home for the holiday & there is a rule that this Pastors name is not to be mentioned. I know she is chilling with Keith so I won't bother her with this junk. Thats my home girl & I will speak for her. I will speak about only what I know. Those close to her no longer attend St. Paul with the exception of her God mom so this stuff about her tubes tied sounds like something made up by that Pastor over there. There are 2sides to a story for sure & you people only here his. I was around when Tarshia had her son, she had an IUD that she had up until the beginning of this year. Tubes never tied, her doc wouldn’t. I was with her when she took her pregnancy test, I was with her when that man would blow up her phone & harass & threaten her, listening as he talked on speaker & didn't know it. Her husband took her to get rid of that child that no one would have wanted. I heard that gross tape & I don't care if the supreme court & George Bush said it was not credible its HIM & he told a news paper lady three different tales about it in one interview. Saying he will mother f her up and that he had a key to her house and would come there and kick her a**. I heard him compare his self to Jesus and brag about other women. I’ve heard the things he says from the pulpit and how he talks to people. I don't hear her threaten him. I’ve heard other tapes where he talks about all of you members there. I was not at court with her, but I read the transcripts. I’m proud to be her friend & proud of her courage to expose wrong. She had to admit to things that I didn't even know. She felt coming out with all of that dirt would help her get her own self together. Whats done in the dark comes 2 light. She did not have anything to loose, he did, so its understandable why he would lie. That girl is happy, She is talented & the Lord is letting her use her talents again, she has a beautiful home, a beautiful son, family and friends who love her, a loving husband who is working things out with her and let the truth be told he is the man she has always loved & wanted anyway. I watched those two stubborn knuckle heads for 20 years. 20 years they have loved each other & they break up, be with other people & come back to each other. I know she loved her church, we all do, but she has known for a long time she did not need to be there. Lord knows she got sick of me telling her to get out of there. She is strong & a go getter and doing just fine. I know a LOT of people who left there and they all have said its because of the Pastor. A lot of them also said they admire Tarsha's courage. I left before he came, but I’ve seen him in action in service and at funerals and I have no respect for the man. Just as all of you have rallied behind him, I am here to rally behind her. No one is perfect, but you lead by example and if you put all the people who left with the few people still there, there are more against him then for him. Why is that if he is so great? I know we all are not crazy. I liked what the lady Betsy said previously, but girlfriend you do act like somebody who knows this situation well. Are you one of his women too. I heard there have been many. One is even loosing her house& she was supposed to have been pregnant as well, but I said I would stick to what I know and not comment on the hear say. Because if I commented on all the hearsay on this man. I would be typing a book and I can’t type that fast. But back up off my homegirl.

He is the hard money lender/private investor who paid the bank off that forclosed on the church last year.

People of God, it's time to pray. Pray that this Jezebel spirit be exposed for what it is and that those that are blinded by it and following it are awakened by the truth of the Word of God. Pray that these sorts of people are sat down and no longer allowed to flourish in the body of Christ and that the true remnant of God be revealed and lifted up before the world. We have totally forgotten that the world is watching this. We should be following the Word and calling out the evil of Jezebel and her agenda, but an effeminate man and a silly women will never do that because they need Jezebel to validate their own selfish ambitions.

Titus 1:7 For the overseer must be above reproach as God’s steward, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not addicted to wine, not pugnacious, not fond of sordid gain,
Titus 1:8 but hospitable, loving what is good, sensible, just, devout, self-controlled,
Titus 1:9 holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict.
Titus 1:10 ¶ For there are many rebellious men, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision,
Titus 1:11 who must be silenced because they are upsetting whole families, teaching things they should not teach for the sake of sordid gain.

1Timothy. 3:4 He must be one who manages his own household well, keeping his children under control with all dignity
1Timothy. 3:5 (but if a man does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of the church of God?)

Abusive Churches
Authority should not be questioned.
Ministers have a higher level of spirituality.
Things that don't make sense are not to be questioned but accepted on faith.
A central feature of an abusive church is control-oriented leadership. The leader in an abusive church is dogmatic, self- confident, arrogant, and the spiritual focal point in the lives of his followers.
To members of this type of church or group, questioning the leader is the equivalent of questioning God. Although the leader may not come out and state this fact, this attitude is clearly seen by the treatment of those who dare to question or challenge the leader.
In the hierarchy of such a church, the leader is, or tends to be, accountable to no one. Even if there is an elder board, it is usually made up of men who are loyal to, and will never disagree with, the leader. This style of leadership is not one endorsed in the Bible. According to Scripture all believers have equal access to God and are equal before Him because we are made in His image, and we are all under the authority of the Word of God. In 1 Thessalonians 5:21 believers are directed to measure all teachings against the Word of God. Acts 17:11 states that even the apostle Paul was under the authority of the Bible, and the Bereans were commended because they tested Paul's teachings with the Scriptures. Leaders and laity alike are to live according to Scripture.
Abusive churches are characterized by the manipulation of their members. Manipulation is the use of external forces to get others to do what someone else wants them to do. Here manipulation is used to get people to submit to the leadership of the church. The tactics of manipulation include the use of guilt, peer pressure, intimidation, and threats of divine judgment from God for disobedience. Often harsh discipline is carried out publicly to promote ridicule and humiliation.
In churches like these, people begin to lose their personal identity and start acting like programmed robots
How different this style of leadership is from the leadership of Jesus, the Good Shepherd who lovingly, gently, humbly, and sacrificially leads His sheep.
Those involved in a church that seems to reflect these characteristics would be wise to evaluate the situation thoroughly and leave the church if it is appropriate. Staying may increase the risks of damaging your family relationships and multiplies the likelihood of losing your perspective. Members of such churches often develop a distorted view of reality, distrust everyone, and suffer from stress, fear, and depression. Some former members even continue to experience these things after escaping from an abusing church

I live in Los Angeles and I don't attend St. Paul, but I know of it. Having said that, I think it's a little telling that those in this church say that membership has declined because the demographics of the area have changed. Isn't God's word universal? If a church is focusing on teaching the Bible then all people should be drawn there. Last time I checked, Latinos are people, too, so why weren't they drawn to St. Paul? Was the church really teaching about Christ or were they catering to a demographic? The true church has no demographic - and all of them.

The pastor's actions were a symptom of the issue. I think this is more indicative of the root.

I read the LA Focus article as well as all of the Waves I commented on a couple of forums about this Pastor on AOL blackvoices. There were other forums that I saw about him and did not comment I heard the tape online. I forgot the website it was on. But this Pastor, Bishop Weeks, Pastor Jamal Bryant and Terry Hornbuckle just show us that we are in the last days. We have to be on our toes, pray for discernment and be very careful of who and what is feeding our souls. God Bless

Rev Wards comments to The Wave in response to his filthy tape
“Regarding the tape, he initially told the reporter who questioned him about it, That was a private conversation between me and someone I was close to. She did not have my permission to make that tape. That is an illegal tape.
A few seconds later he changed his mind and told the reporter,“It wasn’t me”.
Hmmmm…..
The reporter questioned him about his foul mouth and he changed his mind yet again, responding:
“I was provoked. You didn’t hear what she was saying to me”.

Ahhh… the Classic pattern of an abuser. Deny and deflect and that is exactly what this is here. I’m not surprised by his response even though he claims his attorney have advised him not to speak on the issue…(he already disobeyed him by saying this much).

Did he apologize to her. Did he tell his church I did a, b, c and say the things he is guilty of and ask for their forgiveness. Or did he make just a generic I’m sorry apology as some leaders caught do to appease the people following them. He won’t even really admit to what he says on the tape. He denies and deflects it back to the woman he threatens. There are rumors of other women did he apologize to them too. Jesus does forgive and we must too, but you must be sincere and not try to make it about the other person. Take responsibility for your part.

As one of pastor wards daughters bestfriends, i would like to stress my own concern with this current chaos. I see my besfriend stress out everyday because of statements made about her father. every month she googles her father's names and reads all of these articles and blogs. i have seen her cry because people are exaggerating on alot of the information put out. is it your business or RIGHT to not only comment but judge someone's character off of media outlets and articles?
my friend for one not only supports her father but is dying for the world to know the truth, especially when its concerning her younger sibling.
when you choose to sit in front of your computer imagine what his family and friends are going through as you add fuel to this fire.
