How disgusting to lease this to private company.. we paid to build it out of tax dollars at some point...and why 50 years.. please get serious. I'm ready to move to a real city. Also, how do they think this is going to effect local business who needs the parking to be cheap and free for customers.
And to our local officials running our city... yes let people go if we don't have the money... lay-offs happen to us all, we find new jobs. Stop spending money if we don't need extra people working.... it's a cycle, let it happen and we will all recover.

First, these are really sales of the garages paid for on an installment basis.

Mayor Yorty didn't have to lease out the garages.

Mayor Bradley didn't have to lease out the garages.

Mayor Riordan didn't have to lease out the garages.

Mayor Hahn didn't have to lease out the garages.

Only our current incompetent mayor.

Gotta love our city council. What a bunch of imbeciles. Why don't they elect to take a pay cut and benefit package and severance cut to boot. They love to take it out on the tax payer who is struggling now to say the least. Hire more meter maids, tax tax tax tax tax tax tax.....So goes their mantra. Imbeciles.

Contracting out is not the answer. The city needs to collect the debt that is currently owed and now due to the city. Also, get rid of most of the Mayor and Council's staff. The city already laid off from the bottom (library employees etc.) now it is time to layoff from the Mayors office and the Council office. Hurry Santana lay off and furlough the Mayor and council staff.

"In Los Angeles, some council members have said the city should continue to operate the garages but employ practices used in the private sector. However, Santana said the city would be unlikely to make the needed improvements or to charge the higher rates needed to turn a profit."

Yes, these folks are THAT stupid! They admit they have no understanding of what works in the REAL world. They admit gov't can't seem to run things as well as the private sector. I'll be the private sector would have built these for far less than the city paid and would have turned a profit. Now they want to give 50 year leases? Oh, yeah, they are THAT stupid! How much of the lease money will go towards the loan payoffs? These jerks are all just clueless baboons.

I have a much better idea - take the "or else" option and cut the leeches off at the knees. We arent getting anywhere by nickel and diming this issue. And next year it will be worse anyway.

Lets see how far we can kick the can down the road. Maybe it will be long enough so that Vilar can finish his term without filing BK. Or matybe just long enough for Santanna to have a few more drinks and retire on a fat pension.

If we can not afford what we have now then whats the difference in a few more years we will again face the same problem. What happens when private sector takes a hold of these parking garages and doubles the parking fee.

We will be sing the new hit song. Nobody parks in LA. And LA makes no money.

This year's budget was balanced (so to speak) with the assumption that the city would have the revenue from leasing the garages. Why is this an issue now? Hasn't it already been decided? Or is the clowncil so incompetent that they never make their minds up to do anything?

So after they lease out the parking garages to bankroll the fat employee pensions for this year, what are they going to give away next year?

This is ridiculous! If private enterprise can make money of parking garages, then so can the city!

Paul, what do the mexicans have to do with anything? Stick to the subject and keep your racist comments to yourself. Why is it that since the mayor/council cannot balance the budget they have to go after services? How about laying off the mayor's staff and council field deputies? That would save lots of money...

53 million applied against a 320 million deficit...ha! In the meantime, the city still has loan payments to make on the original construction.Do what private enterprise does and start downsizing instead of protecting government workers like they are untouchables. Make the remaining workers actually work and cut the attitude like the taxpayer works for them.

Didn't Rosendahl just hire a "Communications Deputy?" Why? His mouth never seems to have a problem. Pretty soon the only city employees will be mayoral and council deputies!

Okay, so lay off a bunch of city workers. Big deal. I doubt any citizen will notice. I can't remember of the last time a city employee (not police or fire) did anything useful for me or my family. And I have a long memory.
It is time to tell City Council and this idiot mayor that we do not want to protect any city worker just becasue they are a city worker. That's not the way it works in private business. It shouldn't work that way in city business. This is a case of government protecting its own. And growing as large as it can so that it can excercise more control over you, citizen.
Maybe its time to organize a day off from work, and go to city hall and block streets, and disrupt traffic, and yell and scream at these idiots and get a lot of media attention - like those folks in the City of Bell did.

Perhaps a better alternative would be to sub-lease Tony V.'s Mayors Office to LaRaza.....anything to save the poor over paid, over worked, inefficient City workers.
