They claim not to be NIMBYs, but the Beverly Hills folks quoted in this article sure behave otherwise, trotting out a blatant falsehood as a scare tactic when arguing against the subway running under their high school and homes.
The fact is that the 1985 Ross Dress-for-Less methane explosion near Third and Fairfax had nothing whatsoever to do with MTA tunneling, contrary to what Ronit Stone of the high school PTA claim. The MTA has never tunneled along Third Street for any reason, ever! That location is a few blocks from the proposed subway extension route, but clearly nothing was going on there in 1985 that could or should be laid at the feet of the MTA. The Daily News should have pointed that out.
The fact that the unfortunate explosion led to a 20-year federal ban on tunneling in the area was bad enough, but for Beverly Hills NIMBYs - yes, I'm calling them out for what they are - to now just fabricate a history that never happened in order to try to thwart a much-needed project is unconscionable.
If you want to fight a project in the public arena, at least use the truth to do it, not lies.
What else could we expect from a bunch of rich jack wagons??? They don't know what it means to commute to work because you can't afford rent on the westside. For "educated folks" they sure don't do their research before they start their rant fest LOL. What do you expect from a city who had the gall to invite people out to the "Taste of Beverly Hills" telling everybody they want to share their city with the "common people" and charge them an arm and a leg for the privilege of just being there. Sad sad people with nothing better to do than point fingers.

it should go east not west right out to the city of industry so all of loss Angeles can go the new football stadium, and keep going to ontario airport- but we all know that thats not going to line tonys pocket and his boys wont get the fat contracts.its not about jobs, its all about kickbacks to the RIGHT people who know better than the tax payers. 4 billion will turn into 40 billion by the time there done picking your pocket, but nothing the city does makes much since now days, and the west side don't need all the crime thats going to ride into town by the subway to the sea. what a waste of time and money for a hole in the ground.LOL

Extending the Metroline east, has been in discussions. Get your facts straight before you make idiotic comments.

1) Monorails fall down and collapse in earthquakes. Remember the 1994 Northridge quake? The 10 Freeway and the 14 Freeway (elevated structures) FELL DOWN. The Red Line subway (a portion was running at the time) was FINE with no damage and was running the same day. Monorails are a TERRIBLE idea.

2) Ah, the old canard about large amounts of money. "We could give every person in LA County enough money to buy their own car." Yeah, then that car would be useless in five years, or ten years. Subway cars last 30 or 40 years, and the tunnels last hundreds of years. We're talking about building for the future here.

Thank God the vast majority of LA County voters understand that. 67.5% of them voted to approve Measure R. And if you're worried that this project can't be used by you because you live in the Valley, then move out of the Valley. Nobody's forcing you to stay here.

Believe me, they will find a place. I used to live Downtown, and the homeless did not limit their urination to subway stairwells. And there thousands more homeless there than there are in Santa Monica. That just a junior homeless outpost compared to Skid Row.
