Yelp Filtering Legitimate Reviews - Why submit reviews if they won't use them?

I submitted a review and Yelp doesn't even use them. It seems like a waste of time to provide any comments on a business if the site doesn't use them. My review was on a software company my firm uses. After a conference I received one of their postcards asking 'how I'm doing' so after I filled it out, I thought I'd place a review for them on Yelp.
How often are people really using these review sites before going to a restaurant, or a gym or choosing where to register for online classes? Do we really need Yelp-like sites?
