Water can be liquid, ice, and steam, all of which can expand beyond their containers causing ruptures. What is the maximum pressures of the containers in 1800 (+) degree temps before they explode?

Where is President Obama ? Obama must Campaign to stay in office ! Now that New Mexico has a Republican Governor, Obama is out of sight, and really does not care about New Mexico ! Most likely President Obama is having his own MELTDOWN ! Could it be that Obama wants a Nuclear Disaster in America ? Then he can GO GREEN, and have control !

He's probably still thinking about the beer fest with the professor and the policeman..., or his golfing handicap... or an email from Michelle, the kids and her mommy as they tour Africa on our dime... No time for real potentially REALLY large disasters like Los Alamos burning to the ground and whatever radioactive problems that *might* be cause for.

Why in Gods name have they accumulated so many barrels of waste? Why haven't they been sent to storage? And why does Tom Udall show up when Los Alamos burns but can't be found when the Army at FT. Bliss burns up the Organ Mountains?

Great? comments everyone -(maybe not so great, rather, just comments)
Expanding water - apropos of what? The rad waste containers? Propane bottles? The beer in "Expanding Water's" hand?
Where is Obama? How many disasters are on-going right now? Floods, fires, Bachmann - the list goes on and on. Hard to be in more than one place at a time. Another example of a cynical attack on Obama that is rooted in a simple minded sense of reality. Is racing between local disasters, however serious, really what the president of the United States should be doing? I think not.
CornDogz's comments let steam escape from his head but make no contributions to society. Perhaps tied to Expanding Water's thoughts.
Don - Why have "they" accumulated so much waste - why has it not been sent to WIPP?- the answer is that overly cautious groups, primarily in Santa Fe, have opposed WIPP and delayed transport. And, yes the fire in the Organ Mountains was serious - not as serious as the fire in the Los Alamos area.

Obama is making campaign ads in the White House and campaigning in Iowa while his wife, kids, and the usual entourage are vacationing in Africa.

He isn't firefighter certified. He nor the governor have any business attending the fire distracting what needs to be done. Their place is to sign the checks the incident management team put in front of them.
Shut up Al. I keep telling you; you have no credibility.

The smart move would have been for this material to go to a facility designed to contain it such as WIPP.
Tree hugging environmentalist in Santa Fe have fought against WIPP for years. Yucca mountain was killed as well so we have all those great high radiation level spent fuel rods in swimming pools all over the country with one nuclear facility about to be flooded out.
Bottom line is the waste is here. No "hazardous waste fairy" is going to come and make this magically go away. We made this stuff during WW II and the cold war and now have to deal with it. There is no "prefect" option only better options.
If it is underground in a stable salt formation IT CANNOT BURN AND BE RELEASED INTO THE ATMOSPHERE !!!! Have to wonder how those same Santa Fe environmentalist that fought against WIPP feel now that the potential to pollute the entire area around Los Alamos and Santa Fe with radioactive materials can and probably will occur. We got a warning call when the controlled burned a few year ago at Los Alamos brough up the same issue but apparently no one was paying attention then.
There is a very, very remote chance at WIPP it could leak into the ground in a area with massive salt deposites, minimal ground water and very little population.
Where would you rather it be? I pick the underground storage facility for reasons that should be very clear to all today.

What are the odds that the worst nuclear disaster ever to occur, Fukushima Daichi, and then the place where the worlds first atomic bomb was developed, Los Alamos National Laboratory, are caused by natural disasters both in the same year! Is nature trying to tell us something here??
