University of California Berkeley Chancellor Birgeneau spending habits add to Cal's deficit. University of California Berkeley Chancellor Birgeneau, Provost Breslauer Must Go: clean sweep Cal. leadership (The author who has 35 years’ consulting experience, has taught at University of California Berkeley, where he was able to observe the culture & the way senior management work)

Cal. Chancellor’s arrogance and poor judgment: pays ex Michigan governor $300,000 for lectures; recruits out of state $50,000 tuition students that displace qualified Californians; Latino enrollment drops while out of state jumps 2010; tuition to Return on Investment (ROI) drops below top 10; NCAA places basketball program on probation.

Chancellor Birgeneau’s ($500,000 salary) fiscal track record is dismal indeed. He would like to blame the politicians, since they stopped giving him every dollar asked for, & the state legislators do share some responsibility for the financial crisis. But not in the sense he means.

A competent chancellor would have been on top of identifying inefficiencies & then crafting a plan to fix them. Able oversight by the UC Board of Regents and the legislature would have required him to provide data on inefficiencies and on what steps he was taking to solve them during his 8 year reign. Instead, every year Birgeneau would request a budget increase, the timid regents would agree to it, and the legislature would provide. The hard questions were avoided by all concerned, & the problems just piled up to $150 million of inefficiencies….until there was no money left.

It’s not that Birgeneau was unaware that there were, in fact, waste & inefficiencies during his 8 year reign. Faculty & staff raised issues with Birgeneau & Breslauer ($400,000 salary), but when they failed to see relevant action taken, they stopped. Finally, Birgeneau engaged some expensive ($3,000,000) consultants to tell him & the Provost what they should have known as leaders or been able to find out from the bright, engaged people.(Prominent east-coast University accomplishing same at 0 costs)

Cal. has been badly damaged. Good people are loosing their jobs. Cal’s leadership is either incompetent or culpable. Merely cutting out inefficiencies does not have the effect desired. But you never want a crisis to go to waste.

Increasing Cal’s budget is not enough. Take aim at the real source of Cal’s fiscal, & leadership crisis; honorably retire Chancellor Birgeneau, Provost Breslauer.

California VOTERS failed our children miserably. The University teaching staff doesn't contribute a DIME to their own extravagant retirement schemes which are bankrupting "public education".

We voted for the politicians who decimated our State's finances in return for Union Campaign support.

We Voted for a dismal future for non Union middle class families in California again just last November.

We all must embrace the disgrace stemming from the "political" choices we made which will have such a terrible impact on our own children.

Hey! → Stop your complaining – do something about it!

→ College students are super deep in debt, and even beginning to commit suicide at an alarmingly increased rate.-- So that's a head's up: Some sort of problem exists -- read on...

American colleges in the 1950's were TOPS in the world, and yet did NOT bankrupt the student, so, without going into details of the causes, I ask 1 thing:

Does my Petition to The President here address this properly with proper solutions?

The link is http://wh.gov/jU8

Tags: Education, Colleges, Tuition, Debt, slavery (as in DEBT Slavery -- indentured servitude -- ruined credit -- etc.)

Conservatives such as myself, are incensed with the obscenely high tax placed on students (tuition is legally a tax, as it flows to the government, State Universities in most cases)

Liberals are *also* on our side, as they don't like being stepped on by 'The Man'

Note: I'm conservative, so I'm not asking for 100%-total forgiveness of student debt (e.g I don't wanna free handout)--but just basic things like standard consumer protections for student debt that even credit card users have.

PS: If I get 150 signatures, then my petition becomes searchable in The Whitehouse database, and defending the helpless becomes much easier.

Is my petition to The President good, or bad? Tell me what you think...(and, if it's good, sign it & tell yr friend to do likewise)

Stop your complaining – do something about it! Sign the peition http://wh.gov/jU8 & ask your peeps & email list to do likewise.

The Staff, Faculty, and Administrators backed the policians who had to sell out our kids in return for campaign support. Simply employee sweetheart deals and unvarnished GREED is the reason higher education costs too much in California.
