Rick Perry Vetoes Texas Equal Pay Bill

Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) has vetoed a bill meant to prevent wage discrimination against women.

An aide to state Rep. Senfronia Thompson (D), who authored the equal pay bill, HB 950, said Perry's office called on Friday to say he had vetoed it. State Sen. Wendy Davis (D), who introduced the Senate version of the legislation, told the Texas Tribune that she had received the same call.

In a statement, Thompson said she was "deeply disappointed" and "heartbroken."

"Women will still have to struggle to receive their equal pay for their equal work," she said.

The bill would bring Texas state law in line with the federal Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which makes it easier for women to sue employers over wage discrimination. It cleared the state House in late April, and the Senate passed its version in late May.

In his veto statement posted online Friday evening, Perry said he objected to the bill because it "duplicates federal law, which already allows employees who feel they have been discriminated against through compensation to file a claim with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission." He also said he was concerned that it could lead to more regulations and hurt job creation.

And the republicans wonder why they cant win in the BIG election !!!!!!!!

With a total of 24 vetoes and line-item cuts from the budget, Perry elicited howls of protest. In addition to disappointed public watchdogs, Perry also prompted outcry from Democrats by bouncing a bill that would have allowed women to sue over wage discrimination.

Under current law, upheld by the Texas Supreme Court last year, women who are unfairly paid must sue within 180 days of their wages being set — not when they discover that others are earning more for the same work.

But the biggest blows from the governor landed on efforts to force greater transparency, report where politicians get their money and investigate potential criminal wrongdoing.

“Perry’s office is an ethical black hole. Ethics reform goes in. Nothing comes out,” said Craig McDonald of Texans for Public Justice, a nonprofit campaign reform group.

McDonald’s group had filed a criminal complaint earlier Friday over the governor’s acknowledgment that he would veto funding if Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg did not resign.

Lehmberg did not step down, and Perry cut $7.6 million for the Travis County public integrity unit. Perry and other Republicans have pushed Lehmberg to resign after she pleaded guilty and served jail time for driving while intoxicated.

Obama nominates campaign donors for jobs as ambassadors
The White House said on Friday it would nominate six people for U.S. ambassadorships, including three who were closely connected to President Barack Obama's 2012 re-election campaign.
The move follows Obama's nomination of two top fundraisers to high-level administration posts: Penny Pritzker for Commerce Secretary and Tom Wheeler for chairman of the Federal Communications Commission.

Major resources needed for Obama Africa trip

.

While the preparations appear to be in line with similar travels in the past, the document offers an unusual glimpse into the colossal efforts to protect the U.S. commander in chief on trips abroad.

.

Former presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush also made trips to multiple African nations involving similarly laborious preparations.

Bush went in 2003 and 2008, bringing his wife on both occasions. Bush’s two daughters went along on the first trip, which included a safari at a game preserve on the Botswana-South Africa border.

.

Officials said the Secret Service does not want the president traveling anywhere without a top-rated trauma center nearby. The White House medical unit makes decisions about which foreign hospitals meet its standards when it makes advance visits to the locations for planned trips, officials said.

In much of the developing world, the U.S. Navy provides a “floating hospital” on an aircraft carrier or amphibious ship nearby, officials said.

“This is what you need to support the American presidency,” Atkiss said of the requirements,“regardless of who the president is.”

http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/obamas...

It's simple common sense:

It is extraordinarily costly to support the most powerful political figure in the world. There is nothing unusual about the expenses for this trip. America has been doing this for generations.

Bush's patronage appointments to ambassador exceed father's, Clinton's

.

During the presidency of George W. Bush, nearly four out of every 10 of his nominees for ambassador have been “non-career appointees”— or what many would consider “political” appointees. Neither his father nor President Clinton had such a high percentage.

President Bush’s 36 percent rate exceeds the 29 percent of President Clinton’s ambassadorial nominees who were non-career appointees. During George Herbert Walker Bush’s presidency, about 31 percent were non-career appointees.

.

Many of George W. Bush’s nominees have been significant donors to his election campaigns or have personal and political connections to the president.

.

If you wish to equate “non-career appointee” with “political payback,” then President George W. Bush has made more use of ambassadorships as prized plums than his father or President Clinton. It’s also true that if one digs deeply into his father’s appointees or President Clinton’s, one will find a similar taste of political payback to big-money donors.

But President Bush II appears to have provided ambassadorships to his backers to an egregious extent. After all, he has numerous big-money donors to reward.

http://scholarsandrogues.com/2007/06/25/bushs...

It's simple common sense:

All Presidents have appointed political donors to be ambassadors and diplomats. The only thing unusual in the Obama administration is how few such appointments Obama's made compared to his predecessor.

President's vacation to cost taxpayers $60-$100 million
What could be one of the most expensive presidential vacations in history is raising some eyebrows.
President Obama and his family are planning an 8-day trip to Africa and the estimated cost for taxpayers is $100 million.
The Washington Post obtained a confidential document that outlines the extent of the presidential-sized preparations. It includes hundreds of agents to guard the family, military planes to airlift 14 limousines and 42 other vehicles, and enough bulletproof glass to cover windows at all of the president's hotels
An aircraft carrier with a full medical center will also be nearby and fighter jets will protect airspace around the clock.

West Africa for slave traders.

I’m thinking Obama couldn’t resist fanning the flames of African-American resentment and racism during his trip to Africa.

Plus, maybe he wanted to pump up some of the rapidly dwindling supplies of white guilt.

Or see if he could reinstate the race card system that expired at noon on January 20, 2009, when he took the oath of office of President of the United States.

His best hope to achieve any or all of these objectives was to choose a West African country and hope no one in the state-run media would think to wonder why he didn't choose Kenya in East Africa, the land of his father and his father’s tribe, the Luo, which also was a major slave-trading center.

Obama is descended from people who owned and/or sold black African slaves.

How ironic that Obama received almost universal support from blacks who are here because their ancestors were grabbed up and sold into slavery by other black Africans,

including Obama’s father’s tribe.

The Romney video that never was–starring Donald Trump

Real-estate mogul Donald Trump said Friday night that Mitt Romney's team asked him to appear in a "commercial" for the campaign last year–but it never saw the light of day.

The video, he said, was supposed to run during the Republican National Convention and featured Trump sitting in his office with an actor who looked like President Obama. After telling the faux president "what a lousy job" he's done, Trump said, he delivered his famous line to the actor: "You're fired!"

Speaking at a conservative gathering in Washington, Trump boasted that Romney's team loved the video yet never used it because it was "too controversial."

Since Romney lost the election, Trump has not been shy in blasting the candidate as a weak nominee for the party. At the Faith and Freedom Coalition Friday night, Trump criticized Romney for having poor television ads and not performing well in the last debate.

HEY MITT! You're FIRED!!!! LOL!
