"Schillings took Nathan to the emergency room on the morning he died. A doctor said he was dehydrated, but that with time at home and rest he would be able to return the following week to his first-grade classroom at St. John's Lutheran School".

Sounds to me like this doctor has some 'splaining to do!

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Schilling family. The father's words are golden for anyone with a child.

"Take the time to just stop what you're doing," he said. "Read an extra book. Play another board game. Shut off the TV. Shut off the damn computer, because you never know how much time you'll really have."

The tragic death of a young child from an illnes with no real cure, a doctor and staff probably wracking their brains trying to think of anything they could have done to make a difference, and you go with some Lucy comedy routine. You are an insensitive idiot.

My daughter just recovered from a week-long bout with H1N1. I read this and I think about the devstation we would have felt if it had been her instead of young Nathan in this story. I am so very, very sorry for your loss, Schilling family. Please know that many of us grieve with you--many more than you'll ever know. I pray it brings you a small measure of comfort.

You judgmental moron, this is a sad situation... your telling me Doctors and Hospitals don't screw up. My child was a victim of it too Read what the dad said: "J. Schilling said the support of friends and the family's church community has kept him going. He is grateful to the police and paramedics who tried to save his son. But he wonders if the medical system did everything it could and whether he should have pushed for something more". READ stupid, read the article!

I'm curious, what else do you think the doctors should have done? My husband had been sent home once also only to be admitted the next day so I can kind of see your point, but I'm not sure what else they could have done.

Read what the father said in the article:
"D.J. Schilling said the support of friends and the family's church community has kept him going. He is grateful to the police and paramedics who tried to save his son. But he wonders if the medical system did everything it could and whether he should have pushed for something more".

Please stop LiberalBuster. Do you think your comments make this any easier on any of us greiving the loss of Nathan. He was a wonderful young man and will be deeply missed by all of us. I know your intentions are well meant, but please, for the sake of the family and everyone else, stop and let us mourn the loss of this precious child in peace and begin the process of healing. God has taken complete control of this situation and will, in time provide the answers we are all seeking and praying for.

Thank you.

I agree with you, it is in Gods hands. Please accept my appology if I appeared out of line. My sincere condolences to all who suffered the loss of this fine young child.
My initial comment was in defense of the heart broken family. The moral of my thoughts are based on my own experience with loss because of the break-down in the medical care system. However this is not about me or any others that comment here freely. My "opinion" still stands concerning the doctor/doctors. My comments are about a system that more times than is reported fails loved ones and families.

This is too sad. This advice makes me angry though:

"The message from health leaders still is to keep children with fever at home and take them to the doctor or hospital only if they have complications, she said."

How are we, as parents, supposed to know what complications warrant a trip to the hospital? If the doctors can't tell the difference between myocarditis and dehydration, how should we? Is my baby going to die like this one because she was sent home from the hospital instead of being correctly treated? Was there actually anything the doctors could have done to save Nathan?

This is very scary. And these pat answers we are getting are not good enough.

So sorry for the lost of your sweet child. A long time ago, I lost a child. She lives in my heart always as Nathan will live in yours. You may never have the answers you're hoping for, but with faith, you'll find peace.

Those flaming you didn't read the article. Here's what the article printed:

"Patricia Stinchfield, an infectious disease expert with Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota said...

'If they have those symptoms, and they're having any kind of difficulty breathing or dehydration or their fever is unmanageable — those are the kids we want to see.'"

It appears that's exactly what Nathan's parents did. They kept him at home. When he was DEHYDRATED, they took him to the emergency room. Exactly as recommended by public health and medical professionals.

The sad part is that a child's body will compensate for a long time and sometimes make something serious look routine. Then they can go downhill quickly, sometimes in only a matter of hours when the body becomes tired of fighting. I saw this happen once in an ER out of state. A little girl came in with the croup one afternoon. Since she had to go out in the cold air to get to the ER, which is known to relax symptoms of croup, they gave her a nebulizer, after which she sounded much better. There was no fever. Then in a matter of hours she developed epiglottitis, which is an inflammation of the flap which closes the airway during swallowing. She died that night.

This is an extremely sad situation. My prayers to the family.
