Thank you for writing such an interesting article! Emma Marble is my great grandmother, and I'm named after William Marble. I've heard these stories and more from my father (also a William Marble namesake). My cousin still ranches on John T. Muir's ranch near Lordsburg. The Marble name goes on another generation - my son, William Marble Kipp III was born in Dublin, Ireland in 2006. We call him Mars to keep all of the William Marbles straight. We now reside in San Francisco but miss New Mexico.

emma marble muir was my grandmother and i was 18 years old when she passed away. she was an avid traveler inher later years and visited canada three times in one summer when she was in her seventies.she was a very kind and giving person. i would like to add one bit of information about the time curly bill visited her house. she told me that her mother also gave him alot of biscuits wraped in a flour sack. they had a organ that they had purchased invirginia city nevada and as he was leaving, he sstared at it and said "i havent seen one of those since i left home in viriginia." and he was on his way.also mr. marble was a teamster and owned several wagons and hauled silver ore for the mines in virginia city nevada.

ella marble married a man named magrath who i think became the sheriff of grant county in new mexico. when she passed away and was buried in a catholic cemetary but was later interred in the protastant part of the cemetary. i dont know how it came about but im sure of some contraversy. also, the marble familyis listed in the 1880 nevada census. it lists the two daughters and their parents, william and flora jane marble. the birth recordsof the children were destroyed when the court house in virginia city burned in the 1880s or 90s.

Ah ... come on now, maybe you're just a little jealous because you don't even know who your daddy is. Hehe

Ella Marble married Lemuel C. McGrath he was the brother of Herbert James McGrath who became sheriff. They had two girls Dewey Mae and Ida. Dewey married Vic Culberson and Ida married a man with the last name of Davis. Dewey died in Los Angles, California in the 1960's. They had a daughter named Mary Catherine who died at an early age. I don't know anything about Ida other than the man she married was named Davis.

I have the e-mail address for a great grandson of Emma if you would like I will get it to you.

Could one of the "Bill Kipp's" be the one who lived in the Will MacDonald House between Glorieta and Pecos in the 1980's?

I grew up in Lordsburg in the 1940's and 50's and knew and loved Mrs. Muir who I knew as Dee. It was very nice to read the news story as I still remember some of the stories she told us and remember the organ which was mentioned.

The information on Ida McGrath and Mary Catherine Culberson is incorrect. I did not die at an early age. I am still here, soon to turn 77. Ida married Lyle Blanchard Smith, not a man named Davis. I took care of Ida until her death in Huntington Beach Calif.

I am Marlin Aker Jr. grand son of Quincy F. Aker who homesteaded in 1913 just a few miles from the Muir ranch. To make a long story short, Quincy's wife died in 1920 leaving two very young children, my father, age 2-1/2 and his brother age 6 months and an older brother age 10. Over the next few years Mrs Muir showed many acts of kindness to the Aker family. On several occasions Quincy's father Joseph and the older brother worked on the Muir ranch. I suspect that the Muirs bought the Aker homesteads a few years later. If you have any information regarding the Akers I would appreciate cooresponding with you.

Mary: My relative, Oscar Wiessner, was 1st husband of Lyle Blanchard Smith's sister, Blanch. Their daughter, Ruth Pauline (b. 1917 Bisbee, AZ), may have been adopted by Blanch's later husband, Olaf Olson. Would you know if a Ruth P. Olson who died at ElPaso in Jan, 2003 would be that Ruth Pauline Wiessner??(and what happened to Blanch?) cfhelm@sbcglobal.net

Lemuel C. McGrath was from a Catholic family. That was probably why she was initially buried in the Catholic section. They must have both died 1900-1910 because both of their daughters appear to have been raised by their Reardon/McGrath grandmother.

If you are "my" Mary Catherine Culberson, and I think you are, I hope, then your birthday is today, December 16th (funny things you remember from your childhood.) My "Cappy" was my dearest friend growing up in L. A. in the mid-40s. Your mother worked at Bullock's Wilshire, your father was a lovely man. You and I were the very greatest of friends. You took me with you to your dance lessons, tried to teach me to play the castinets -- so many memories I have of Cappy and me walking through the streets of Los Angeles -- 6th and Alvarado area to be exact, with copies of the latest song sheets.
I can only hope you get this message; that it is you, and you remember me with all the love I feel for you.(Last time I saw you was in the mid '50s at Victor Dane's home.)
Please contact me if you get this.(my last name then was Waldstein). My email address is waldron256@yahoo.com.
