what's depressing is that the owner of the car that was stolen could end up having to pay for ALL the damage. Not a very bright idea to keep the engine running with the keys in at any time, but it doesn't mean that she should be
penalised for it.

Same exact intersection where there was a gang shoot out in broad daylight 2 days before Xmas 3 or 4 years ago. Why would ANYONE want to live in downtown until this gang mess is cleared up?!?!

hmmm ... "attractive nuisance" ... hmmm ... broken door to an open elevator shaft left open and some idiot steps through it and falls to the basement. Hmmm ... un-fenced swimming pool and some little neighbor kid falls in and drowns. And ... hmmm ... Lexux with the keys in the ignition and the motor running -- in Lynwood -- and a few stupid gangsters wander by and say, "Whoo-wee! We got ourselves a ride to Long Beach!" But they're so stupid they don't know how to handle the car around a corner. Attracted to a nuisance, but ought to have known better, just like the idiot who knew not to step into an open elevator shaft. At least the little kid who couldn't swim was innocent and only curious.

In a civilized society, we've gotta look out for people like that and take care not to let them hurt themselves. Or hurt someone else.

Dang right it's that lady's fault. And it's the stupid gangster's fault who doesn't know how to drive, too, even tho' the article seems to let him off the hook.

The downtown area has many beautiful older homes and apartments, many are affordable. That's why people want to live there. While I agree that there is a gang problem, it isn't confined to just this area. It is spread all over our city and many other cities. Until we as a society decide we will no longer stand for the cowardly, useless, senseless violence that is perpetrated by gangs, nothing will change. Wheteher we like to admit it or not, gang behavior is glorified in our culture. In our music, clothing, television and movies. We need stronger penalties for crimes, more accountability of the parents of these little angels who get involved in the lifestyle while still minors. We are so afraid to offend anyone or force them to take responsibility and by doing that we fail. Look around, we have failed.

I think there is something wrong with this paragraph:

"According to state law, the driver of the stolen car can be found liable for all damages in the crash because she left her keys in the ignition and created what is referred to as an "attractive nuisance." "

Shouldn't it say the "owner" of the stolen car? The driver of the stolen car is the guy that stole it. Nice.

This is something that I did NOT know. To anyone who has ever done this, keep this in mind before doing it again! Wow.

Wow, I find it interesting that the owner of the vehicle took so long to report her vehicle stolen. I'm sure it takes some time for the officers to conduct their accident investigation at the scene and then wait for the tow truck to arrive and then put the vehicle into the system as towed.

Hmmmm...I wonder if the vehicle owner is also Black. Its a stretch, but im thinking maybe son and his friends took mommas car for a spin on sunday.

They were just racing off to any high school that might have an event that they could shoot at. And yes, if your vehicle is stolen you WILL be held liable for anything or anybody hit by the vehicle.
The perps have no license, no job and no money. but they do have friends at city hall - the politicians that refuse to allow law enforcement to enforce the laws!!!

This is misleading but it appears to me that the gangbanger would be liable as he is the driver if it meant the vehicle owner it should say owner.

According to state law, the driver of the stolen car can be found liable for all damages in the crash because she left her keys in the ignition and created what is referred to as an "attractive nuisance."

Wrong. It's spread all over the city because HUD gives grandma a check to pay her rent in a neighborhood she could never afford otherwise, grandson gets out of prison, no place to go, grandma lets him stay there, he calls his homies, they're all hanging out there now, selling drugs, turning tricks with teenage girls they turn into crackheads, and grandma's too scared to try to make them leave.

Don't allow HUD in middle-class neighborhoods, and the gang members generally disappear from the area, sine without HUD, neighborhood watch networks would actually work, people would take them seriously, and call the lbpd whenever they saw them.

Poor blacks do NOT have a right to live in areas they can't afford. If HUD only paid for rent in poorer neighborhoods, HUD could service TONS more people, and Lakewood could get somewhat back to what used to be normal.

Dude... the editors are old, the reporters are spent out. They can't deal with things like citing criminal or civil law accurately. They're just marking time until retirement.
