The postal service...what service?

The cancellation of Saturday mail delivery would end a 150-year tradition.

Technically, the Postal Service is not allowed to its reduce service unless Congress changes the law, but lawyers for the Postal Service think that they have figured out a way around this, CBS News reported. President Barack Obama has endorsed the plan to cut Saturday service as part of his deficit reduction plan.

The postal service wants to cut service but raise the price of stamps?
When does this increase go into effect? Have not seen a date yet.

According to the Government licensed "news" media, the Government is planning to stop delivering mail on Saturdays. I am all for it. I talked to my mailman and he told me that mailmen can never lead a normal life because their current work schedule is rotational days off. That fact means that mailmen seldom afforded the benefit of enjoying regular weekends off. I never thought of that before. I hope when the Government stops Saturday mail delivery, my hard working mailman can begin enjoying a normal workweek schedule.

Here is a plan. Reduce delivery to 3 days a week and increase the price of a stamp so that the Postal Service is breaking even. Then let the chips fall were they may. In other words, let the private sector pay for it or loose it. It's called capitalism. It works.

I can't think of anything I would not be able to accomplish if regular mail (USPS) went away completely. Bills are available online, bills can be paid online, legal docs are already sent by courier, and I can't remember the last time I sent or received personal mail through the USPS. The rest is all junk mail and flyers that go straight into the trash.

I send and receive stuff via usps on a near daily basis. Whenever I go to the post office, they are always busy, even the local one they just closed down usually had a line. I prefer them to the private shipping companies for just about everything.

My point was that it quite possible to survive without the USPS. Of course if it exists, people will use it. Some will even stand in line waiting to be helped. That does not invalidate my point that I personally would be fine with the USPS going away. I have no use for it.

Mad Man has a point... There are still a good number of people who need the USPS.

Didn't see announcement that postage went up. Read they were talking about it but have not seen anything since until I printed out some stamps. All this for one penny? I still mail things and use the postal service for packages that I can't drop in the mail box (which are about every 4 blocks). Postal service has gone downhill like everything else. Why should they care? For one penny, they are still around and with attitude also. I get medications delivered to my home and it depends on who the carrier is. Sometimes they ring the bell to let me sign for it or if it is another carrier, they leave the slip without letting me know my medication are here.
Attitude and a penny!!!!
