And all the adults in attendance went outside every fifteen minutes for a coffee and a smoke break, thereby teaching all the kids there that drug addiction is actually OK.

I never understood that either. So many people are dependent in their daily drugs that they don't consider the impact it has on their kids. If a kid grows up hearing their parents make comments like "I can't do anything before I have my coffee" or "I have to smoke or I can't cope" they will learn to be dependent on chemicals. Its unavoidable. Kids will learn from the example that mom and dad set. If mom and dad always have a cigarette or a coffee in their hands the kids will learn that drug dependency is ok. So many people think certain drugs don't count, but if you are trying to teach a young person to avoid addiction, you can't be openly and happily addicted yourself. It doesn't matter that its "just coffee and/or cigarettes " its still an example of addictive behavior.
Kids learn from their parents that its OK to be an addict.
And then the parents can't understand why their kids become addicted.
It doesn't matter which chemical it is, its all addictive behavior.

Very well said. Its not an indictment of certain products, but parents need to know how susceptible to suggestion their kids are. If its ok to use chemicals to wake up or to calm your nerves, then its ok to use chemicals to control other mental and emotional conditions. Kids pick up on this both consciously and subconsciously.
They are aware that their parents are using chemicals or a product to influence how they feel. Its a learned behavior, and its dangerous.
Thats where it all starts.
