Anyone remember getting stung in the cornfield while picking "roasting ears", and being told you had got stung by a pack-saddle? WHAT kind of thing was that? I remember being scared to death to walk thru the corn rows, cause you would get stung 4 or 5 times. Are they still around? What do they look like?

yes indeed they are still around, and they are found on a lot of weeds other than corn.they are a little wooly worm looking thing, light colored and about an inch long.i can remember hunting in the woods and wiping one right thru the crack of my a.. thats when you feel the real wrath of the notorous packsaddle.

cksaddle worm n Also packsaddle(r) [See quot c1960] esp sAppalachians See Map =saddleback caterpillar.1884 Smith Bill Arp ' s Scrap Book 72 GA, I wonder if Harris ever saw a pack saddle. Well, its as putty as a rainbow, just like most all of the devil ' s contrivances, and when you crowd one of em on a fodderblade you ' d think that forty yaller jackets had stung you all in a bunch. 1925 Dargan Highland Annals 208 cwNC, You said I must git another big mess ' fore the frost struck ' em heavy, an ' that field was plum full o ' pack-saddlers. One stung me ever ' time I laid my hand on a roas ' in ' year. Hit hurts worse ' n a hornet fer a minute, an ' it ' s harder on a body ' s temper than a hornet is. 1953 PADS 19.12

My grand-daughter got stung this summer, it left about 5 little stings on the bottom of her foot, the whole foot and ankle swelled for about two weeks, it was very painful for her. We took her to the hospital at first we thought she had twisted it, you couldn't see the little sting spot's till a few day's went by. She was at a friend's house and they told us she may have steeped on a pack saddle and sure enough that's what it was. Sure hope we never meet those things again.

They get on the corn leafs - mostly field corn not the garden variety - usually on the underside. I was in the cornfield one day in a bikini top and a corn leaf fell across my back and started stinging the piss out of me. I looked and one of those dang things was on it. Dang it hurt!! Worse than a hornet. Moral is stay the heck out of corn fields.
