Hard Working Man

I have a close relative that has worked at Laurel Grocery Co for many years and has been a good, hard worker pulling groceries sometimes over 16 hours a day. There is a huge problem there by the name of Lawrence Mills. He is one of the top supervisors and is treating my family member VERY BADLY and has done so for a very long time. He has to work for a living and needs the health insurance to buy his expensive medicines, and Lawrence Mills knows this and when he knows he has someone between a rock and a hard place, he makes them live hard. My question is - who else out there reading this has endured how Lawrence Mills mistreats the employees or knows someone that he has treated wrong? He talks awful to them and treats them with disrespect like no human should have to endure in the work place. Lawrence Mills is a person that needs to be exposed, but employees are afraid to go to Bob Kirch, the main guy in charge or to the owner because everybody says they are afraid of losing their jobs. Good paying jobs are very hard to find and if you quit you don't have any way to live. There is a difference between a bum that won't work and someone who is working as hard as they can work and still gets all this mental and verbal abuse from their supervisor. So anyone who has had to quit or been treated bad by Lawrence Mills, please respond. Lawrence Mills has to be somebody's tail wipe doing the dirty work.

I have heard people say especially when someone is getting ready to retire or have bad health problesm that they ride them really hard. The company does not want to be out retirement or disablity so they bring somone in to be the one who makes working so hard that they quit rather than to stay long enough to retire. Maybe that is his job with the company to make it so difficult that people quit. Maybe if he gets them to quit there is a bonus in it for him. I have heard of that before as well. Would they be allowed to call OSHA? about the working conditions? Who owns Laurel Grocery? Also, if they are being treated badly they can take a tape recorder or their IPOD and record every word that is said to them and play it back for their lawyer to hear. Just some suggestions.

A UNION in Laurel Co., you must not be from here. The Union tried to come into the bakery a number of years ago and the local Chamber of Commerce took a stand against it, needless to say that is when I dropped my membership and support for the Chamber. I guess their afraid there might be some job security, good benefits and pay come with it and that is an absolute no no in London and Laurel Co.

Just thought that I would let you know that Lawrence Mills is AWFUL!!! Did you know that they sent out a memo a couple of years ago to the employees telling them that they better not shop at stores that were not a part of Laurel Grocery because that was not helping Laurel Grocery and that was the same as supporting terrorism! Can you believe that??? They wanted them to shop at EC Porters and not Kroger or Walmart! Also I know for a FACT that Lawrence's son acts just like he does and he used to work at Laurel to until he ran his mouth one to many times and he got his butt kicked right in front of a bunch of guys in the warehouse! Also, Bruce Chesnut has retired but he still owns Laurel and the Griffen family is part owners too. I think if a bunch of people got together and went to the higher ups, something might get done. Lawrence does get into trouble when people go above his head and tell what he has done to them. He does a lot that many of the one's above him don't know.

The workers at the bakery fought very hard for a union and stood up for themselves and eventually won union representation

Why did they hire his son to work there if he is so bad? Has he been there a long time? or is he related to some of the big wigs? There is a reason that he is still there if he is that bad to work with or he would have been fired a long time ago.

All the things I have read about Lawrence Mills are true,he is unfair to the employees, and changes the rules to fit his needs,he is a person you can never please no matter what, an he is always right no matter what the issue is, like so many have said in these comments employees are afraid to bring it up to higher management, afraid of lossing there jobs, an there isnt many good paying jobs around london, they may hire you as part time but work you a 40 plus hour week and not pay you the wages they need to pay you or give you any benefits, seems to me laurel grocery needs to take care of there employees, since the employees are the ones who made Laurel Grocery.

What is his job title over there? I mean is he the owner? a supervisor or what? It seems to me that you all need to get a bunch of you gathered together and go talk to management, or a lawyer.

Yes, Blake Mills IS a supervisor working nights. Wonder how he got that job???? That's not right or fair for the boss to have his son as a boss - isn't that a conflict of interest??

I don't understand what you are trying to prove but you are wrong, number one do you know what a budget is? Mr. Mills does not decide the amount of the raise! Do you know what rules are?? Apparently not. Are you special?? Apparently you think so. I think you should ask some questions and you should read your rule book, if you even work at Laurel. Also he is not the one who decided to raise your insurance. He is just a man doing his job. Are You??

Not only are these comments bashing Mr Mills but they are also bashing Laurel Grocery. You need to step back and look at the whole picture and most of this information is just totally wrong. I would be sure I had my fact right before I wrote some of these statements. Here say is not something I would want to repeat. As in all companies or all things in life nothing is perfect and everything and everybody has there problems. What does Laurel owe you besides your wages for a days work. I would hate to see what would happen to a lot of people if there was no Laurel, have you thought about that? What about all the people that has worked there since 1922?
You just don't stay around as a company for that many years if all you do is mistreat the employees! One of the owners was honored a couple of years ago and he got up and said the honor was not for him but for his employees, because without them and there hard work and dedication there would be no Laurel Grocery!
Does that sound like a company that does not believe in ther employees and appreciates them.
As you can see in some of these comments some employees are easier to appreciate than others.
All you have to do to keep your job is do your job and take pride in it and yourself!!! I know all the from experience because I am an employee and have been for many years!!!!!! I refuse to let the few speak for the many. I encourage all other employees to speak up and be proud of your job and where you work.

Who is this? Must be Lawrence Mills, his son or just another relative.... I happen to know that Lawrence Mills will only go by the rule book if it benefits him and will ignore it if it doesn't benefit him. If you actually did work there, there's no way you would respond positively about Mills.

I do my job for 70 hours a week at Laurel Grocery in a warehouse that is so hot it feels like working in a microwave because there is no air conditioning. I also do my job on equipment that should be junked.
