Stupid Atheist Tricks

There are intelligent, educated atheists who can give you a plausible, well-reasoned argument for their position without being offensive. But if you've ever debated atheists on-line, or for that matter in real life, you run into a lot more would-be clever atheists who don't understand the difference between reasoned debate and Christian-baiting. For those folks, I have here collected a list of typical tactics to use.

#1 -- Insist that "religion is illogical," especially if you've had no training in formal logic and couldn't tell a syllogism from a shibboleth.

#2 -- Insist that you "just believe in one less god than you do." Ignore the fact that a Christian monotheist and a Hindu or Neo-Pagan polytheist agree that the supernatural exists, which puts them closer to each other than either is to you. And never agree that a Christian (or whatever) might concede that there is an element of truth in other religions.

#3 -- In any discussion of religion, you must make at least one reference to Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, or invisible unicorns.

#4 -- Be sure to mention the Crusades, even if you know nothing of medieval history and couldn't give a concise summary of the events to save your life.

#5 -- Be sure to mention the Inquisition and/or the Witch Trials, because if anyone claiming to be a Christian ever did anything evil, it obviously invalidates that religion.

#6 -- If your opponent brings up the fact that more people have been killed by officially atheist regimes than in all the religious wars and persecutions in history put together (e.g. 80 million by Stalin, 60 million by Mao, 1-3 million by the Khmer Rouge), insist that they weren't "real" atheists, or that "communism is a religion."

#7 -- If your opponent says that if bad atheists don't invalidate atheism, bad Christians don't invalidate Christianity, refuse to concede the point. Bring up the Inquisition or the Crusades again.

#8 -- Claim that "science" somehow proves atheism. Ignore any claim that science can't do any such thing, since it operates on the basis of methodological materialism.

#9 -- Claim that evolution falsifies Genesis. If Christians or Jews claim to have no problem with evolution, accuse them of denying what the Bible actually says.

#10 -- Claim to know more about the Bible than "Christians" do. Ignore the immense implausibility, since Christians are likely to read the Bible every day and study it at home, at church, and on church retreats.

#11 -- This is most important -- insist, as heatedly as any extreme fundamentalist, that the Bible must be read in the most naively literal sense in all passages, and therefore the tiniest mistake or scribal error invalidates the whole thing and any religion based on it.

#12 -- Imply that your opponent is mentally ill. If he/she doesn't seem to get it, be explicit. After all, religion is a form of mental illness. Ignore the fact that theists are no more likely to score high on psychiatric intake tests than anyone else.

#13 -- Two words: Richard Dawkins.

Great post. I do not agree with all of it but it does an exceedingly good job of pointing out numerous ways atheists alienate the very people they are trying to convince. I believe that most of this attacking and childishness stems from frustration a lot of the time. It is easier to attack someones character than to refute them using well thought out points.
No one is omniscient but just because some atheists figured something out they suddenly think they know it all. Anyone, especially brilliant people, can fall victim to this hubris. These links can further illustrate my point
http://www.cracked.com/article_18638_4-nobel-...

Some thoughts though-#5 mentioning the Inquisition and/or the Witch Trials does not invalidate the religion but it is a good way to point out that without questioning your beliefs you may be persuaded to do harm without realizing it.
"Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities."- Voltaire
#6 I would insist that a lack of belief is not a good or bad thing. Anyone capable of the greatest goods or the most heinous evils and anything in between, belief in a deity or lack thereof is largely inconsequential. I would also say communism is not a religion but rather a replacement for it where the state takes the place of a deity. Both systems are designed to make it socially detrimental to question the status quo.
#11 The Bible places no distinction on stories that are meant to be literal as opposed to those to be taken figuratively. I think it is a valid point to make that with a book that is supposedly the ultimate authority it is illogical to take some things as true and some as fiction when they are all written as matters of fact.

they prolly somewhere oppressed by odumba's hate agendas with his obama care and taxing them to death.
the poor christians have given more than you all. charity begins at the house of god. they provide for their own, first.
be specific, and go ask of them and they will give. if you don't tell them how will they know. matt 7:7. Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:

You seem to be under the false impression that only Christians are charitable.

Christians are usually the most hateful people you'll ever meet. I know there are exceptions, so you people can spare telling us about your aunt Jenny and your uncle Cletus, but for the most part I'm right.(As usual)

Maybe its what you pray for. If you are asking for money, an odd prayer; if He answered that one, we'd all be rich. If its to be better looking, thats vanity, He hasn't answered that to the majority of humans. He never said anywhere in the bible that we are on Heaven, He distinctly says we are on earth. Our gifts are ahead. At this time, its not what you want but how you handle what you have and don't have. Have you ever truly thanked God that you were born in the United States, the best nation on earth? The nation everyone else in the world wants to come to. He put you here at your birth, what a wonderful gift!

They that are unsaved cannot see beyond the flesh. They cannot see anything that is beyond seeing, smelling, hearing, feeling, tasting. They do not, and cannot believe there was and always have been an existence of beings who live without flesh and blood. Romans 8:7 (King James Version) 7Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
Without the spirit of God, you cannot comphrehend his holy word.

Rom 8:1 ΒΆ[There is] therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Rom 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

Rom 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:

Rom 8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Rom 8:5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

Rom 8:6 For to be carnally minded [is] death; but to be spiritually minded [is] life and peace.

Rom 8:7 Because the carnal mind [is] enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

Rom 8:8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

Rom 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

Rom 8:10 And if Christ [be] in you, the body [is] dead because of sin; but the Spirit [is] life because of righteousness.

Rom 8:11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

"Stupid Southern Baptist Tricks"

(I'll only mention three)

(1) Reciting only verses that sound good and ignoring the rest (about mass murder, slaughter, sex slavery, the selling of women, etc).

(2) Trying to have other people's forum posts deleted if it's something they don't like or want brought up.

(3) Attempting to whitewash past atrocities (such as the inquisition of the Jewish, mass witch-burnings, and Crusades) while condemning other religions for doing them.
