The Obamas Family Trip to Africa to Cost $60 to $100 Million [A Navy aircraft carrier or......]

The Obamas Family Trip to Africa to Cost $60 to $100 Million Daniel Halper June 13, 2013 2:12 PM

President Obama and his family will be going to Africa later this month. But the trip won't be cheap; it's expected to cost American taxpayers $60 to $100 million, according to the Washington Post.

"When President Obama makes his first extended trip to sub-Saharan Africa later this month, the federal agencies charged with keeping him safe wonít be taking any chances. Hundreds of U.S. Secret Service agents will be dispatched to secure facilities in Senegal, South Africa and Tanzania. A Navy aircraft carrier or amphibious ship, with a fully staffed medical trauma center, will be stationed offshore in case of emergency," reports the Post.

"Military cargo planes will airlift in 56 support vehicles, including 14 limousines and three trucks loaded with sheets of bullet-proof glass to cover the windows of the hotels where the first family will stay. Fighter jets will fly in shifts giving 24-hour coverage over the presidentís airspace so they can intervene quickly if an errant plane gets too close.

"The extraordinary security provisions ó which will cost the government tens of millions of dollars ó are outlined in a confidential internal planning document obtained by The Washington Post. While the preparations appear to be in line with similar travels in the past, the document offers an unusual glimpse into the colossal efforts to protect the U.S. commander-in-chief on trips abroad."

After the paper questioned the costs of a planned family safari, the White House nixed the plan. "The president and first lady had also planned to take a Tanzanian safari as part of the trip, which would have required the presidentís special counter-assault team to carry sniper rifles with high-caliber rounds that could neutralize cheetahs, lions or other animals if they became a threat, according to the planning document. But the White House canceled the safari on Wednesday following inquiries from The Washington Post about the tripís purpose and expense, according to a person familiar with the decision."

The paper adds, "Obamaís trip could cost the federal government $60 million to $100 million based on the costs of similar African trips in recent years, according to one person familiar with the journey who was not authorized to speak for attribution. The Secret Service planning document, which was provided to The Post by a person who is concerned about the amount of resources necessary for the trip, does not specify costs."

I wonder if prior Presidents had security and all the things the current one is equipped with. Ah, he's only the President of the #1 country in the world. Why would he need protected. Just sayin'.

Tax cheats in this country costs this country billions every year, so I'm not going to worry about the security and govt. mandated items for the President of the United States of America.

What the Hell. Murdoch, main squeeze of Fox News, is getting his 3rd divorce from his 3rd wife, >40 years his junior and having to submit his 3rd prenuptial agreement. I guess it's that Republican Tea Party thin' he's got goin' on....you know, the ones who have an exclusive on christianity and the likes. I just wonder if he took lessons from Republican Trump and GingRICH?

Murdoch (major shareholder of Fox News) has older children (and all other ages) who have voting stock in News Corp and word has it, his daughter don't like the way Fox News operates.

I wonder how many people have lost lives in all wildfires, floods, hurricanes, tornados throughout history. I'd imagine it's alot.

It's over folks. Our country will never recover from the financial ruins and debt. When you know you can't recover, we as humans seem to self destruct. Our govt is doing this as we speak.the worst is yet to come.

I wonder how many senior citizens could get their prescriptions filled with that money. Wouldn't it be nice if this nonsense could end so the workers of America could bring home just a little more money each pay period? How many families would consider it wonderful to just be able to afford an overnight trip for a family vacation? It is really sad. I don't care which party he represents it makes him look less of a human being to spend money in this way with so many people looking for work or working and still not able to meet their necessary expenses. I'm sure he is still trying to find his roots and wants his daughters and his fashion-setter Michelle to have one last big excursion before he leaves the country in one of the worst situations since that famous peanut farmer. I don't really expect anyone to think that a man who had done nothing productive, other than serve briefly in public office, in his life. Oh, I forgot he was a community activist! How could he possibly know the needs of people across America? Maybe, Michelle will find a sprout for a new healthy vegetable growing in this advanced country and bring it back to America to feed our needy. Perhaps they will discover in this medically advanced country a better birth control to help control the birth rates and bring it back to the USA. They have so much we need to use as patterns for our lives. Somehow I think they just want to seek out and visit their relatives in the jungles of Africa. After all. those two lovely daughters need to know this information so they, unlike him, can get their roots correct. We got just what we elected --an inept president much like other democrats and republicans we have elected. I remember people swooning over this young black man that could actually stand before a convention and make a speech. Never mind the content of his speech. We are paying the price for our failure to educate ourselves about the people we elect to serve our country, whether it be a local office or national office.

True! It's a shame that state employees such as social workers are getting furloughs which puts women and children at risk while he is on safari using your tax dollar.

Well every president has had expensive travels.I think because of the state of the economy and the massive debt the country has now causes it to be publicized more than the past.
Almost every place the Obamas have went so have past presidents.
Former presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush also traveled to Africa multiple times. A report from the Government Accountability Office, according to the Post, showed that Clinton's 1998 trip to six African nations cost the federal government at least $42.7 million.
So considering inflation since 1998 the $60 to $100 million cost today from 15 years ago is probably about average for the time.
I don't recall any president having all his travels out front to the public as much as the media has with the current president so I think that makes it seem as if he travels a lot more than the past ones did.

I guess Obama's sequester doesn't apply to him and his family. The little people are the only ones going to suffer. School children won't get to visit the white house but the obamas don't skip one vacation.

I have one thing to say. I'd hate to think that people like you could ever run a country with your overstated, ridiculous opinions. Obama taking a necesary trip, given the fact we are the world leader, has not a damn thing to do with the fact an employer won't pay you a little more money. The employer makes plenty while he starves you, so you can blame it on Obama. Nice little game they have going there. When I see the business tycoon's portfolio shrinking, then I'll start worrying about how many times a day Obama shits.

If your previous President hadn't drove this country underground, Obama could have done alot more wonderful things.

During Obama's visit to Chicago a veteran also said he was disgusted that the president would come to Chicago ‚Äúone week after 50 schools were closed and ask for money.‚ÄĚ He emphasized,‚Äú[Obama] should be raising money for the children,‚ÄĚ and the veterans, rather than fundraising for himself and the Democrats. I wonder what the Chicago vet thinks now?
