You could sprinkle mothballs around your house and in flower beds. That will detour all snakes, or go to lowes and get some Snake-B-Gone and sprinkle that around, it's more expensive then the mothballs tho.

To bad you cant find a nice adult black snake to take up residence at your place. The copperheads would soon be gone. I let a huge copperhead get away from me last fall in my barn. I was in the loft throwing down some hay when I saw it. By the time I got to the ground it was already gone I havent saw any copperheads yet this year but I did see a black snake about 5 feet long in the yard a few days ago. Thats a good thing. I hope it stays around all summer

Depending on where you live and if you can legally discharge it, a shotgun with No 6 shot does a great job.

The problem with the product from Lowes is that it contains naphthalene (naphtha) which can be harmful to outside pets or small kids if they ingest it. A friend pointed me to a product sold online called Liquid Fence that is pretty much organic (Mint/Garlic base). It works great. Haven't seen a snake in 2+ years. It's a bit pricy but goes a long way. It covered well more than am acre in perimeter.

Are you sure it is copperheads? Milk snakes and northern water snakes are commonly mistaken for being copperheads. Also other snakes are mistook. I'm not saying what you have isn't copperheads. We have them in Laurel. But I've found that most of the time it's a mis-identification.

On my family's land if a copperhead gets around the house we just catch it and turn it loose in the woods. But I don't blame someone for killing a copperhead if it's in your yard and you don't wish to take a chance on being bitten while catching it. If you have children you particularly don't want one at your house. But be sure it's a copperhead. Most snakes you want on your land.

As the population of people grows it's far too easy to kill out a species. Even good things and harmless little critters. Look at some of the songbirds for example.

In PA we have a brown snake that is often mistaken for copperhead besides the two you mentioned.
We kill copperheads and rattlers with either a shotgun or a 44 with birdshot, no questions ask.
If the rattler is big enough we will skin it out and eat the meat.

I really hate to tell you this but if the snake is not a king snake and is just a black rat snake. It will not eat a copperhead. Even in areas where both coexist the kings can not and don't control the venomous population. Case in point the pine creek church area has one of the largest copperhead populations in the area and also a large black rat snake population. Black rat snakes prefer rodents, birds and sometimes small lizards. There is no fool proof way of keeping snakes away from your property. The best thing to do is clean up any wood piles, metal, and keep food for rodents down.

The best deterrent is to snip off some human hair and place around your doors or anywhere outside around the house, the snakes smells the scent and it believes there are people nearby.

elaphe your mistaken. We have black snakes that definetly do eat copperheads. We also have king snakes too.
I dont have a clue whether the black snakes we have around here are black rat snakes or not. They have just been called blacksnakes my whole life. But any of the old timers can tell you they do eat copperheads and probably rattlesnakes too until they get to big to swallow. They wrap around them just like the pythons do to their prey. Then swallow then headfirst. I have seen it happening.

Answering Machine that would work just fine. I think about a third of the women in clay county dip anyway. They should be able to take out a good sized copperhead with no problem.
All u city slickers that are skeered of snakes need to find you a good clay county gal to hook up with. Try to find one with all her teeth or a good set of dentures. Its awful tryin to chew up a piece of possum steak so your girlfriend can swallow it. But if you realy love her you will get over it pretty quick.
Besides all that its pretty cool to share a spitcup with your woman while your watchin rasslin on TV

Debunking myths about copperhead snakes

Copperheads do not interbreed with Black Rat Snakes ("black snakes"). The presence of Black Rat Snakes will not keep copperheads away. These are two mutually exclusive, yet popular myths, which probably have some basis in fact. Young black rat snakes do have a protective camouflage pattern that somewhat resembles copperheads, except that they are gray and black rather than brown and tan. While Black Rat Snakes do not attack or eat copperheads, Eastern Kingsnakes do. Eastern Kings are black in color, but with a narrow white or creamy yellow chain-like pattern down the body.

To prevent copperheads from frequenting your yard or property, practice good housekeeping and landscaping. Eliminate brush piles, trash piles, wood piles, and leaf clutter that both attract rodent prey and provide snake concealment shelter.

Have Jenny come over and rassle that ol' snake into a burlap bag. Tie it up quickly before either can slither free and throw them in the river.

Jenny can escape the burlap bag since her family used to throw her in the river almost daily tied in a burlap bag. The snake will drown.
