So I was browsing through the local non-profit's income statements and I came across some interesting stuff:

The fiscal court gives Ambulance Inc. over $100,000 dollars a year to help them operate, it was up to $125,000 in 2007. Ambulance Inc. pays the "owner" Bill and Janet Smith $107,300 dollars a year in rent for the ambulance station. That's almost $9,000 dollars a month in rent for that ratty old building. I think the county should cut off the yearly contribution and build them a building instead. We can spend $500,000 dollars on a nice large building for them, and have recouped the cost in 5 years, then they won't have to pay $9000 a month rent, so that won't need our yearly $100,000+ contribution. Although I don't know who Janet and Bill will find to rent that dump for $9000/month.

Then I notice they pay T & B Salvage, INC (Owned by Tim Smith, Janet Smith, and Bill Smith)$253,482 dollars a year for vehicle maintenance. They're paying dealership rates for backyard mechanic duct tape jobs. I'm all the time seeing Bolton's flatbed running around with a Ambulance Inc. ambulance on board, or listening to them on the scanner saying their truck is broke.

Then there is the salaries:
Susan Carpenter(Bill and Janet's daughter)$69,667
Shannon Knight (Bill and Janet's daughter)$63,837

All told monies paid to Smith Family members and organizations $494,286

Then they pay James Hacker $70,641 and gives him a bus to drive, which he drives everywhere...

I'd like to see a county ran service, where padding pockets isn't a consideration. I think we should start pressing Westerfield and the magistrates on this issue.

Look through the return if you don't believe me:

This is up there with KACO and all that crap. I'm going to call my magistrate and the judge and see if we can stop this crap. At the very least we can stop lining the smiths pockets with the rent money...

Go to your fiscal court meetings and complain about it. But you know what, at the next fiscal court meeting there will not be 6 people aside from the media people that will attend. Everyone complains about how the county runs it's affairs but no one ever comes to a meeting and says anything. You have to get involved to make change in your county, don't wait for someone else to do it for you. Fiscal court doesn't want to be in the ambulance business, they don't want to be directly involved in any emergency services. They only have one or 2 fire dept. out of 9 now that they appoint board members to. They pay the fire alliance to take care of providing fire and rescue service, they pay Ambulance Inc. to provide ambulances, they pay West Knox Fire Dept, in Knox County to provide coverage in the south end of the county because state law requires the county to provide these services to the residents. But could you imagine the mess if the fiscal court took over any of the emergency services, OMG it would be a disaster. But if you would like to put your 2 cents where it will count, attend a fiscal court meeting.

Does anyone know how much money the service donates to the county? that is why it is not county owned. How can you complain about how much a ambulance ride costs when it cost alot for every county period. AILC provides more training and reeducation for the paramedics and emts than any other service around. So do you want untrained personell working on you or people that always continue the medical education to be the best. Look at the other countys who argue about who responds to calls. If anything you get the better end of the deal by having a privately owned service than having a county owned service that cant afford to keep the trucks running or keeping it supplied with critical equipment and people that dont care.

They donate to the county, the county gives to them.

WHAT a punch of dumb hillbillies, complaining about how much it cost to run a service like this, THAT HELPS PEOPLE. you have no idea what is involved. the people that work there pay taxes you know, that means part of your rideto the er was paid by them and me. so next time you go to your mailbox and get your stamps for food and your disability and welfare checks just be very thankfull there are good people out there making a honest living So u can survive. KENTUCKY = FOOD STAMPS,DISABILITY CHECKS, WALFARE. DID U KNOW THE #1 KILLER IN ALL STATES IS AUTO ACCIDENTS, WELL EXCEPT KY AND DO U KNOW WHAT THAT IS ?? DRUG OVER DOSE. DO SOMETHING ABOUT SOMETHING THAT MATTERS, LEAVE HARD WORKING PEOPLE ALONE OR U MIGHT BE SORRY, LOL

And here I thought it was wild possum attacks.

Actually, it's still cardiac disease, mostly caused by smoking. The #1 killer of teens in all states is auto accidents, but they've not smoked enough to kill their heart yet.

Kentucky ranks sixth in drug overdose deaths per 100,000 people, but it's way down the list at only 17.9 people per 100,000 annually or about 500 people. Pretty far off car accidents and way off cardiac fatalities. Kentucky is 4th per 100,000 people in drug abuse, which seems to indicate the people are a little better at handling the drugs since the state is 6th in deaths.

I don't see why Laurel County would make a mess of running the ambulance service. Clay County makes a profit and they run theirs. Knox County didn't do very well for a while but it was kind of a side project for the Fiscal Court. Since they quit hiring half the people in the county, I think they're breaking even, which is about where an ambulance service should be. Just the excesses in salaries and rent show AILC is run a little too well. The county should take over all emergency services, it's their job.

One thing is for sure, if you have even a small accident, they'll run that ambulance out and practically try to throw somebody on it so they can get their fee. And if you take the ride, expect the bill the very next day. Not joking.
