It's hard to believe a body hasn't been found. bodies float and drift to shores. This is a relatively small lake. it's a mystery to me. If somehow the body is tangled under water it is producing gases that will cause it to surface soon. It seems he should have been found long before now. This is not the vast open ocean here... Where could he be?

Sounds like you know nothing about water rescue. Bodies don't just go down and come right back up. That lake is very deep in some places and rough down under. It could be days , weeks or even months before a body might come to the top. Then again it may never show up. It's sad but true.

I can't believe you're all on here talking about what this man's flesh might be suffering. His family could see this! You should all be ashamed!
It's pitiful that people are so utterly and completely disrespectful!

Thank you! I'm very close to the family and it's hard to imagine what they are going through. Being a man made lake and lots of tree etc under water it's been tough. They are in recovery mode now meaning they are just looking for the body and the hopes of finding him alive are slim to none.

Well I'm just saying you don't have to have a dive team to go help in a search. I'm sure his family don't care about a dive team. I'm sure they would be just as happy with people walking the banks. And looking for anything.

But I guess that's just as good of a reason as any not to have to do anything.

Laurel Lake is 5,560 acres of water. It is 19 miles long with over 200 miles of shoreline. Although the average depth is 72 feet, it has a maximum depth of 250 feet. I watched them build that lake and there's a lot of forest underneath all that water. I have also traveled from one end to the other on that lake and believe me, that's a lot of area to cover.

I honestly hope he's found.. It hurts to even to the lake and try to have fun knowing that just recently someone's possiblly drowned or something. I pray that god covers that family with overwhelming love and support. And that he finds a way to give the family closure if no one is found. This is a terrible thing to happen. And I know my god will do everything to help find him. Maybe if people would learn to pray more. God bless his family and friends

UPDATE Search for boater now a recovery effort

Mountain News is told the search for missing 32-year-old Clarence Holmes is now a recovery search.

ORIGINAL STORY:

The search for a missing man at Laurel River Lake is still in full swing nearly 48 hours later.

Search and rescue teams along with emergency management are pulling together with help from the boater's family.

It has been an active search both on land and water for 32-year-old Clarence Holmes, who was last seen on Laurel River Lake in his pontoon boat.

"He was trying to get back to the marina. I guess to make sure the house boat was okay and make sure everything was anchored down here," said Dena Newcomb, Holmes' aunt.

Officials say Holmes' boat was found washed ashore on this island still idling just one mile from Holly Bay Marina.

A nasty storm is what officials say they suspect probably set Holmes off course.

"At this point, we do believe that Mr. Holmes was caught in the storm. We think that we may have been on his way back to Holly Bay from a house boat that was set up near Marsh Branch," said Kimberly Morgan, who works with the Daniel Boone National Forest.

Search and rescue crews have been on the water for nearly two days searching a 400 acre portion of the lake.

"A lot of forest is still under water at this point, so that's some of the obstacles divers and cameramen are going to face," said Morgan.

For now, no traces of Holmes have been found in or near the waters he knew so well.

"He loved the lake. It was his favorite place. Absolute favorite," said Newcomb.

The rescue effort includes help from Laurel and Pulaski County officials as well as the Daniel Boone National Forest.

A man is missing at Laurel Lake and possibly drown. The authorities are here searching. That team is impressive, must have fifty officers sitting in the Marina parking lot, and at least half drove a big tax bought SUV. Generators are humming and they are having a big time. Alot sitting, very few searching. I read all you people on here complaining about Washington waste. We ought to start at home and question the amount of money being spent in Laurel by our politicans and agencies. From the look of this rescue effort you'd think the Titantic sank. But shouldn't be surprised, passed a fender binder accident last week, and an ambulance, and about six cops were there. Savings starts at home and we taxpayers should start asking questions.
This is my cousin who, by the way, is still missing. I don't care if they come in choppers, tanks, or limo's, as long as he is found. The more people/equipment we can have searching for him, the better.

"THIS DUDE" is my cousin. We are beside ourselves with grief and it saddens me to see such comments from someone who doesn't even know him. Even if that IS the case, we still want him back! Imagine a close family member of your just vanishing, and never knowing for sure what happened to them. It's a nightmare.

Its still possible he will be found alive and maybe just injured.
I know this storm came quickly and it blew stuff all over and even a tree fell behind our house. So he could be on the ground someplace needing help just waiting for someone to find him.
There is always hope until you know one way or the other.Praying for your family and for him and most of all a good outcome.

I can't begin to imagine the torment your family must be going through right now. I hope it helps to know that there are a lot of concerned and compassionate people here who are holding all of you close in our hearts and our prayers. I pray that your cousin will be found alive.

I'm praying they find him soon, I've had a family member parish in this lake and it's heartbreaking. I cringe each year of fear that someone will lose their life in this manner. The lake is deep in areas of where this young man was. That dam was open years ago with woods, and homes underneath. I hope he is found safe.
