coach welch is a good man but a horrible head coach. didn't he already go winless at north for a couple of years as head coach? and all you people talking about irwin....he never played football, he watched from the sidelines. he had a ton of talent that got his wins, he was crap as a coach and he left when his talent graduated, before he could be shown for how pathetic he actually was.

He went deep in the 4A playoffs a few years ago, better than Welch or Chappell. The only coach in the past 15 years to make a run that deep was Randy Ledgar back in 98 or 99.

And he did play football back in 89 or 90, get your facts straight.

Do you realize how much credibility you have?

""Will Lassiter's new coach keep the good times rollin' like this past year?(AJC file)
Lassiter’s football program cannot get enough of a good thing.

The Cobb County school named Jep Irwin as its new head coach. Irwin served the offensive coordinator at Pelham High School near Birmingham, Ala., this past season.

Most importantly, Irwin is considered an expert in the type of spread offense that was successful under former Lassiter coach Chip Lindsey, who was hired away as a college assistant at Troy.""

""Irwin has run the same spread offense the past four seasons at Pelham, which made the Alabama Class 6A playoffs three of those seasons. Irwin also was a head coach for four years at South Laurel in Kentucky.""

irwin had football excitement at an alltime high at south laurel when he left, he had just beaten the hounds from corbin 3 straight years and had made a deep run in the playoffs, the kids loved the wide open offense. he is still very succesful now running the same offense.
Now this year, the talent is there but just not being used, its like they keep taking the water bucket to the same empty well over and over and over. i know the offensive coach is not the head coach so he may be told who to play, but how many times do you carry that bucket to an empty well. the coaches dont play a single down but they are responsible for putting the kids on the field that can make the plays..........after 3 weeks of going to a dry well, i think i would try a new one.

Didn't they just make a couple changes? Sometimes the water is just hard to swallow. A sulphur well won't kill you but it's all you got.

irwin was on the team, but he never played. he was a joke as an assistant. i played under eicher when he was assistant and irwin didn't know his head from his butt. ask anyone that played in the late 90s.

He's coaching AAAAA football in some of the toughest football regions in the nation besides Texas, and you're on Topix.

Excuse me if I don't ask.

As pointed out in earlier posts, SL football was an exciting program from 03 to 05. The atmosphere in late 2005 when we beat GRC and LaFayette in the state playoffs was electric. I'd say that he did his homework well in between his stint as assistant and head coach at SL. I'm not sure what you're seeing, but the atmosphere around Chappell and now Welch is a joke. Owned by Corbin, owned by Knox Central, and now getting owned by NL. You can put Jep down all you want, but it's a heck of alot better than the circus surrrounding the program now.

Also, the offensive coordinator now is a freaking joke-should step down at start over-on the youth level.

See hoss, you let your emotions cloud your reasoning. You come off with your senile remark and then lose it and come real close to making a worse mistake.

This is neither NL or SL year to do much. The well isn't that deep. Create turmoil and turn off the future players. Let the kids play ball, quit blaming this ghost or that ghost. No kid wants to jump into a rumor mill and become lost in the squabble. Let them play and have fun and the up and coming boys will want to play. If not you will have plenty to gripe about on Topix.

It does not work like that. Coaches are responsible for execution, plain and simple. Most of us have not seen South laurel execute on both sides of the line since Jep Irwin left for Alabama. Jason Chappell could not cut it, and i doubt Welch will be around much longer. If we held kids responsible and not the coaching staff, Bill Curry would have coached UK for ten more years, and Steve Kragthorpe would still be coaching at UofL.
Welch coaches defense, Po coaches offense. The defense is doing its job, but the offese sucks!

this is about the only statement on here that matters!nothing against jep, went to school with him,but who cares?he isn't here, isn't gonna be here, the past is the past, live in the now!the defense is doing it's job and have u realized most of these kids have never been on a varsity field until 3 weeks ago?i would appreciate it if u would shut up about the kids!if u want to say something about the coaches they r adults but at least man up and go to them and tell them!i believe they r realizing their mistakes and if u all r such followers,in the next couple of weeks u will see that!!

Just because your boy letters in splinters is no reason to take anything away from the boys that played the game, either team. NL fielded man for man the equal to any SL player. It is football ignorant parents like yourself that causes problems. Telling your lucky to be on the team kid he is a D1 prospect. NEWS FLASH: There were not a single D1 prospect on the field. What game were you watching?
Let the kids play, they are not going anywhere this year. So let them at least have fun.
Really this is highschool sports and these kids should really be learning more than just football through practices and games. Most of these will never play college sports and what they learn should prepare them for the real world that most of the people on here is doing and really shouldnt have time to talk trash. I hear several assistant football coaches have resigned at South. I guess all of you that have complained about the coaching now have an opportunity to apply and see if you can do any better. My guess is you'll continue to sit behind a computer monitor and run your fat mouth. Either apply or keep your mouths closed this year eh?
