If any of you bad mouthing these kids or the coach are actually SLfans,(I stress "IF")I just dont understand how you cant be proud of what these kids have battled through since last year. First off, not knowing who would be the coach and if they wanted to go through the big transition of coaches. Secondly, I dont see how you just cant appreciate how hard these boys go at it every game regardless who they are playing and what the score is. Lastly, is the way the ones that are left have stepped up and helped SL batle through such adversity while majority of the line up has been hurt. This team could easily win the region once all the players are back and 100%. Everyone I know of who doesnt have a kid playing, thinks that this new coach has done a great job with these kids so far. The kids love the style of play, and he gets 110% out of all his players. You can not say that about your last coach. As far as you whiny ass parents go. Listen. This is just the cold hard facts and everyone with eyes and no kid playing can see it and agree with this. Baxter is by far the best player on that team considering hes just a freshman. Hale is right there behind him but hes older and been there longer. Sanders I wouldnt say hes the 3rd best because hes what really makes this team function, hes just offensively challenged. Then you have a lot of really good role players in Rader, Slavey, ect. Just pointing this out to the parents griping about one kid or the other, because this is how the majority feels. What has killed this team worse than anything is the lack of size, and everyone knows you cant coach that. So quit looking at the record and what little Johny is scoring, and appreciate what these kids have battled through. Im telling you, this team will shock a lot of people come district and region time.

Well i cant wait to be shocked. I want you to repost at the end of the year. And also you had a good coach that the parents ran off. Look what he has done at S.W. South barely beat whitley both times this year one with all starters and one without.

I think it's safe to say there was some crap going on under the surface regarding coach Wright. Don't get me wrong, his run from 2005 to 08 was nothing short of great. However, the last two years it seemed like the kids weren't responding and underachieving. As for the almighty Southwestern, they've taken a few losses this season. And considering they returned their lineup and were heavily favored to win the 12th, they've been solid but there's nothing to indicate they are a threat to win state this year.
This SL team has some growing pains, and the game last night against Whitley underscored that. The big glaring weakness I see with South is rebounding and production from the post. I've seen a few games this year, last night included, were they get slaughtered on the boards. I really think that if you put a team with Baxter, Hale, Sanders, Slavey, Mitchell and you could add a strong 6'6 type of guy who could dominate in the paint, this team would be *the* team to beat in the 13th.
As for Stevie's comments, he needs to remember that South has been without Blake Sanders since Christmas, the Schaser kid will be out even longer. Hale and Slavey were out for a time. So, injuries have played a big role in this year's season. You cannot deny that.
Anyways, i think there is quite a bit to look forward to next season. Baxter will continue to improve, and hopefully add some upper body strength. IMO, Baxter will be one of the greats to come out of Laurel county basketball and will be getting some consideration for First team All state by his Junior season. I'm sure some will laugh at this, but remember he's averaging double digits and has dropped in 18-19 ppg against good competition (perry central). And, remember, he's just a Freshman.

O.k every team is an injury away from not be any good. As for you saying if we had this or we had that we would be good, anyone could say that. if whitley had a 6ft6in center and a great point guard they would be good. ifs and buts dont cut it. And if coach wright was still at south they would have only lost a couple of games. if i remember right when south had sanders, schaser, hale and slavey the first of the season they were still losing. wright would have won those games.

No,stevie would bench slavey, hale, shaser, sanders, etc ..in order to play some below average player(aka his son,or the son, of someone he's doing)and yet another winable game would be lost! Face it. Stevie overstayed his welcome. He's washed up!

A injury? How about 4 starters injured at the same time? Theres not a team in the state that could overcome that. Youre either Wright himself, or just that stupid if you think Wright would have only lost a couple games with all thats happened to this bunch. First off, most of them wouldnt have come out for the team. But what did Wright do when he didnt have a stacked team? The only time he did anything was when he had that 05-06 group for those years. Any moron could have won state with that bunch. But ironically it took that moron to lose the 06 state championship. Other than that, what has he done? Win a couple districts in a crappy 13th region? He loved to take all the glory when he had a stacked team, but was quick to throw kids and parents under the bus when he didnt have much of a team. Yeah, hes doing a heck of a job at SW isnt he. Got beat by teams that have no business being within 20 points of SW. With what, a loaded team he walked in to, and one of Canadas top players he had recruited there. Along with a kid he stole from NL? Yep, hes geting it done alright. LoL.

so you are saying most of them would not come out and play for steve wright, well i hate to tell you but they all did play for him and the parents ran him off. and also south was losing when they had all of the starters. you act like they was winning when the had all the starters, well they wasnt. and i guess south is doing everything by the book, yea right one kid played football at knox and now he is at south. when steve won state those boys was not recruited. talent is down at south right now. mommy and daddy needs to tell their kid he is not an all star and just have fun.

stacked team or not he won state the record dosent say he was stacked it just says state champions. and yes if he was still here he would have won alot more games. when you say starters is why they are losing you are putting the other players down. I think the other kids are just as good as some of the starters.

Oh I doubt that. Steve had a good run, but he reminds me of a Rick Pitino of high school coaches- past his glory days. And just as Pitino is doing a mediocre job at Louisville, Stevie boy is taking a loaded Southwestern team and making them a mediocre 12th region team.
And who can forget his famous 2006 choke job, when we had Walt Allen, Proffitt and Hammonds, and couldn't score more than 50 points against Graves County in the quarterfinals.
Or we could talk about him playing his out of shape son during crunch moments in games. Not to be mean, but the kid had no business out there.
Jeff Davis is new at head coaching on a varsity level. As such, he's going to make mistakes and he's still on a learning curve. That said, his system is fun to watch, and the kids work hard and get after it. The talent doesn't compare to 05 to 08, but those kind of teams come once in a lifetime on the high school level. That team had 2 go to Division 1 schools, and several others to smaller schools. On this team, Baxter is as close to D1 as they got, but he still needs a couple more years of growing up to do, and getting stronger. Another thing, the injuries have been horrible. Right around the holiday tournaments they had lost Sanders, slavey, and schaser was playing with a sore back. The Hale kid was just returning to the lineup. Anyone discounting the injury problem is full of crap.

fact is they were still losing when they had those starters. and when steve lost in 06 its not his fault they kids were not hitting, you can lead a horse to water but you cant make them drink. as far as his son goes i agree he wasnt very good but anyone would play their son. I have seen teams for years that the coaches son played and wasnt very good and the played. just face it, if steve was here south would have won alot more games.

sounds like alot of bitter parents on here. Its funny for the last several years some of the parents(you know who u r) walked around coach wright kissing his *ss so little johnny could play. Now that he left you put him down bad. I guess your lips are sore and a bad taste in your mouth. He left because some of the parents thought their kid was the next big thing and the parent wouldnt leave him alone. you got what u ask for.
