We did it ourselves and it took about 5 months from start to finish. Didn't have to go to any hearings. They say it's usually a turn down the first time for about 70% of people though.

I couldn't find the answer to this on the SSA webpage. Just wondering if anybody has any idea on what determines whether your child is eligible for benefits after you receive your award. Does the income of your spouse get factored in? Thanks :)

Thank you so much! Does your wife work? I was just wondering if my income would make any difference. My husband got Social Security Disability. He already got his back pay. I guess they would be separate though, right? He has an appt to talk to somebody next week. We were just curious. Thanks again!

Your income doesn't effect your husband's disability income. A rule of thumb is, you do not have to be poor to be disabled. Now if you apply for SSI it will be effected by all incomes and children in the house. Disability is based on how much the disabled person was making when they were working and it is averaged over some many of the last years you were working. People also think they can't work if drawing disability...WRONG...you CAN work on disability. Anyone that says different don't know much about SSDI. Again the rule of thumb, you don't have to be poor to be disabled. There are set liits on what you can earn and still recieve disability and they will inform you of that amount after being declared disabled. Also the selling of property or an inheritance does not affect your disability, you can be a millionaire and be disabled, rule of thumb again. So don't try to hide things such as work, or money in the bank, or how many houses you own or property you may have. Lying about these things could disqualify you and you may even have to pay back SSDI that you have already recieved.

I have been denied after the hearing. It's been 7 1/2 months since my appeal was sent in. How long does it usually take after the appeal, anyone know? Unfortunately,I have a attorney that is not very informative. Wished I had never used him. I filed for Social Security Disability not SSI.

obama sucks you will not get SS because you was always too sorry to get out and work at a job that was not aginst the law, you did not pay any thing in so you will not get any thing back.BTW SS is for working people not some slacker like you.SAD BUT TRUE.

I believe the original question was do you receive back pay for dependent children or do your children receive disability. Children up until the age of 18 or until they graduate receive a check. That is the way SSDI works. I believe you submit an application. And another thing SSDI is for people who are disabled and FYI you shouldn't refer to them as slackers. This was something that was set aside for people who cannot work and the government does make sure that they cannot before you get it. Sir/lady-don't wait to apply. If you can't work.

As I have said before it is not only for people who can't work. You can work on disability. You must suffer some medical problem that hinders you from working as much as when you were healthy or you're not able to work at all.

I used attorney Paul Baker in Barbourville when I applied. His staff was very helpful.
