Is he 14 not 16 sounds like you need to teach your daughter to take up for her self if it really happened you guys are jealous because the kid gets some attention and you don't its really sadThat kid is 16 and in the eighth grade. Does that not ring any bells? Rattle any cages? He's a mean ass kid as big as a man. Sorry the teacher is right. My daughter got beat up by an eighth grader who happened to be behind in school and was a bully. He caught my daughter picking up something from the floor and hit her over the head with a book. What kind of "child" would do that. The Principal would not or could not do anything. So this little shot walked away laughing.
The 14-year-old West Virginia student who was arrested in April after refusing to remove his National Rifle Association T-shirt was formally charged with obstructing an officer last week and could face up to a year in jail.

Just keep watching for a large settlement. Ben will get his cut, the family will get their cut, and the Logan County Board will have less money to help our students who really needs the help. Just because the charges have been drop does not mean this crazy case is over. If the Board of Education doesn't realize that they need to improve their dress code policy then they just need to resign. Just ban all shirts that have any kind of writing on the back or front. All students must realize that rules needs to be followed. Again I say that all students in Logan County needs to realize that their shirt that they wear to school at any given time cannot have any kind of writing on it. This is the only way the county can protect itself from frivilous lawsuits. Wake up Central Office.

Everyone likes to ignorantly throw their gossip and hearsay into this discussion, but let's review the FACTS:
FACT 1: Jared Marcum wore an NRA shirt to school. The shirt was NOT in violation of any policy. There were NO disruptions to the educational process, or student complaints prior to the school official's actions.
FACT 2: Jared Marcum was asked by a school official to remove or cover his shirt, in a cafeteria in front of other students. Mr. Marcum had done nothing wrong, but was subjected by the official to being criminalized and embarrassed in front of his peers.
FACT 3: Jared Marcum refused to remove or cover his shirt. He felt that doing so violated his constitutional rights, and it most certainly did. There is no argument to this fact. He had every right to civilly refuse to do what he felt violated his rights.
FACT 4: There has been much debate as to how Mr. Marcum truly handled the situation. Opponents to Mr. Marcum have argued that he nearly incited a riot. However, Fox News reported that arresting officer James Adkins claimed that Marcums refusal to talk obstructed his ability to do his job. READ THAT AGAIN. According to Fox, Officer Adkins admitted to arrested Mr. Marcum for REFUSING to talk. This statement reportedly from the arresting officer himself seems to contradict those who claim Mr. Marcum was being unruly.
Based upon those 4 facts, and ignoring the other garbage being spewed forth on here, an intelligent reasoning individual can only deduce that Mr. Marcum was singled out, targeted by a school official's personal political agenda, wrongfully humiliated and criminalized in front of his peers, and when he rightfully refused to remove his shirt, he was further ridiculed and threatened. His continued refusal led to the school contacting the City of Logan police department, which resulted in Officer James Adkins arriving and continuing to threaten him into submission, even falsely claiming that he could arrest him for terroristic threats. And according to Mr. Adkins himself, as reported by Fox, Mr. Marcum sat there and refused to talk and refused to comply, which led to his arrest.
Can you imagine how this 8th grade boy felt? He woke up, put on his clothes, went to school, and then had to be subjected to all of that and then be arrested and taken from the school in handcuffs! OVER A SHIRT!
I don't care if you like the kid or the kid's parents. It doesn't matter. Those are the FACTS. And those facts show how politics in Logan are absued on a daily basis to carry out personal agendas. It is wrong. It is ridiculous. It is Unconstitutional.
Hundreds of Mr. Marcum's peers have wore the same shirt to school since this incident. To my knowledge, NONE of them have been harassed, threatened, or arrested. The charges have now been dropped, as they should be, but what about the damage to this kid's reputation? As a result of this, he's had his name dragged through the mud. He's most certainly been on here, reading the lies, gossip and trash-talk about him, his parents, and his family. The damage is done.
I hope that he does sue the Logan County BoE. I hope that he does sue the City of Logan PD. And I hope the BoE and City of Logan WAKE UP, realize that this crap needs to stop, and take appropriate action to punish those that caused this mess.
I don't know Mr. Marcum. I don't care if he's a jerk, a bully, or who his Dad is. He stood up for what he believed was right.(And he was RIGHT.) And for doing so, he has been put through this mess and will forever be remembered by it. Someone needs to pay for justice to be served. I'm sick of politics in Logan and political figures getting away with junk like this.

This was a 14 year old child, confronted in the lunch line, in front of his peers, for wearing a shirt that he had already been wearing for 5 hours prior, with no problem. When confronted in front of the rest of the school, the chest will automatically stick out and the voice will raise, it's just a part of human nature. The shirt did not violate school policy, the first person to say something was the woman checking off names in the school lunch line, she had no authority to say anything. The teacher confronting the kid was handled all wrong, he continued to confront the kid in line, he should have removed the child from the hostile setting, and went to the office. Instead he started a shouting match which got the rest of the room involved. The child only did what all of have done before, looked and sounded big in front of our peers.
By the way; the charges were dropped because of public opinion and the petition.
