"""Well another slap in the tax's payer face"""

CHARLESTON, W.Va.(WSAZ)-- Drug felons could see some extra benefits, including food stamps and other financial programs, if a bill passes through the House at the West Virginia Legislature.
Despite lots of debate Thursday morning, the bill did pass the Senate floor 27-6, allowing the state to opt out of a federal statute that currently bans those convicted of drug crimes from receiving assistance.Supporters say this makes it fair, since those convicted of violent crimes are already are eligible after finishing their sentence."Often times, families and children are left behind, and what this would say is we're not going to deprive children and families of these folks once they've paid their debt to society," Sen. Corey Palumbo said. "We're not going to deprive these folks of their benefits."Other lawmakers want the federal ban to stand, saying it holds felons accountable."Too often we have what I label as 'hug a thug' programs where we are simply too quick to forgive and forget," Sen. Evan Jenkins said. "There needs to be some consequences for one's actions."
Jenkins referred to other laws that have recently been amended, lessening the repercussions of different crimes. Those in favor of the recently introduced bill say it's all about leveling the playing field and looking out for families."There's no reason to, in my mind, distinguish between drug offenders or any other felons that are eligible for these benefits," Palumbo said. "It's all federal money. There's no state dollars going to these programs."More than one dozen states have passed similar bills with West Virginia, one that's now caught in the balance. "We have laws that are pretty tough on the books that send a clear message that we want you abiding by the law," Jenkins said. "The idea that we're starting to roll back those one at a time is the wrong direction to go if we're really trying to keep our neighborhoods safe."This was a non-partisan issue, but members of the House think it will be tough to pass since it is a controversial bill. The House Judiciary Committee will take up the bill early next week.

I really enjoy getting up and going to work six days a week knowing that they are trading the food they buy with there card for dope. Makes me happy to know some dope dealer is eating good on the half of my pay day the government takes.

And also giving them a fully paid medical card to get more pills to sell with.

I am so sick and tired of my tax dollars going to support low life. I think the tax payers should have a choice as to where their tax dollars are spent. I also think that social security should go to those that have paid into it, not to these bums on SSI that think being a drunk or drug addict is reason not to work.

In the beginning welfare was good meant for those having a "TEMPORARY" hard time but now it is hereditary passed down like family treasures. No one teaches kids to work just how to draw free money.

THERE SHOULD BE A TIME LIMIT.

Pick up trash and clean county and state buildings. Work for what u get.

first of all there are more people than you think that get foodstamps and 90% of the people drawing foodstamps do work and still get them and yes they pay taxes just like everyone else and why not let people that have a drug felon get them but you people agree to let sex offenders, murders, etc...some people that have a drug felon need help they might have kids at home and I am sure that these people that have these felonies have either paid there time or are trying to get back on there feet first and foremost everyone needs at least a second chance if your are a felon than most likely you have a probation officer that has to make sure that you are following the rules that are given to them so if they mess up let that be there second chance before you judge someone you need to think that maybe just maybe this felon could end up being you or someone that you are close to this is the USA so why not let the goverment feed there own people instead of across the waters god bless you!!!!!!!!

I believe the protestors in Egypt had the right idea. If the people stand up for themselves and for what they believe, things will change. But until this generation grows a pair and are willing to stand up, nothing will ever be any different. I'm all about helping the less fortunate, but when a single mother can't get a medical card and a drug felon can....it's time to call your representatives. That shit isn't right at all.

Most of you people are total nut cases. You continue to judge people and say so many bad things that you know very little about and none of you have enough balls to put your name on it. There are a
lot of needy people who get these benefits and because of some abuse you would choose to abuse the ones who need them. You talk about government money and the very ones who we elect are misusing and stealing much more than the drug addicts of whatever can ever cost this program. Remember you will reap what you sow. I did!

I do not want to abuse anyone. I would just like to see more stringent rules when it comes to getting government assistance, as far as drugs abusers go. There are many people who need assistance, and there are also many people who want assistance. But for the ones who have chosen to throw their lives away on drugs, they need to grow up and handle their responsibilities in life. And quit asking for handouts because you CHOSE to ruin your life.

it is a specific type of drug felony that keeps someone from getting foodstamps - the law has been since 1996 & it is for drug felons that sold dope. the thinking behind the law was someone selling enough drugs to be convicted of a felony had made alot of money that they didn't report making.
the drug felon law doesn't keep other people in the family from getting foodstamps either, just the convicted person.
there are NO laws that keep someone from getting a medical card if they are eligible otherwise.
on the medical cards - you can be a lazy, good-for-nothing bum and get a medical card just because you live in the same house with your kid.
tell me why somebody that sits on their butt all day watching tv should get a medical card when all of these hard working families, where both parents work just to make ends meet, can't get any medical insurance

you are soo far off with that 90% of people who get welfare work, you are not even close. the statistics are alot closer to 25% of people that get foodstamps work. personally, I think if you are working - you deserve MORE help. and the older people that have worked & now retired, help them too. but the lazy people that won't do anything - they don't deserve anything!!

KY Just passed a law that says if you fail a drug test you lose your welfare benefits. And WV is giving them more benefits. Some times I'm ashamed to be from WV!
