I had noticed Lockport has a couple of different teams at most levels. Which one is more elite? Cobras or Vipers?

My son is to young for travel but from what I hear you can't go wrong with either. I also was told stay away from New Lenox teams. They are average at best, charge a ton and the coaches and parents are all nuts!

Our team has played against the New Lenox teams and those organizations from coaches to parents are nothing less than A$$ES. I've never witnessed more out of control parents anywhere. Completely irrational people.

I have heard some pretty bad things about the Prospects from new lennox but some good things about the Celtics, Yellow Jackets and Mokena Blaze.
I guess every organization has a few bad apples?

Why would you subject your son or daughter to travel baseball? Do you really belief the nonsense that playing travel baseball somehow "improves" his or her chances of playing high school ball? If you do, you are a fool just like 99% of the parents over the past 25 or so years of "travel" baseball.
If you believe playing "travel" baseball translates into a college scholarship then you are an even bigger fool.
Let your kid be a kid. Baseball should be fun, not a summer job.
Face it, the odds of your kid starting on a varsity baseball team is virtually non-existent. The sooner you learn that lesson, the happier you and your child will be.

Listen, it is a worthwhile thing to be involved in sports. The non sport people or the couch potatoes do not like it. I say let them be involved if they are happy doing it. It involves others and social skills. Some people on here lack social skills and know nothing at all about what they are talking about.

Totally agree. If the kid is having fun with it then it's a good thing. Unfortunately there are way to many parents and coachesto that take ot way to serious. Most of them make it all about them and not the kids. It's not all that hard to make the varsity team in h.s. and really is not that important if a kid does or not. It doesn't define his life.

I never said being involved in sports wasn't an important part of growing up. All I said was that "travel" anything is worthless and a waste of time.

Anyone who believes otherwise will find out in a few years that I am correct.

It' the parents who are reliving their childhoods through their children that are the problem. Then these same parents are left bitching and moaning when their kid is cut from the freshman baseball team.

Kids would have a whole lot more fun if parents would just stay away.

You are absolutely correct that so much of the organized sports and travel teams are parent driven, not child driven, but I do believe that there is typically a better level of competition on SOME of the travel teams, but surely not all.

Someone mentioned earlier that it isn't hard to make the varsity team at the high school level, but that is really not true here in Lockport. It is an extremely competitive team and so few kids from any of the travel and non travel teams will actually make the high school team. Luckily our kids got off the ball fields before high school because they knew it wasn't their sport.

In my experience, many of the travel teams are run by dads who are coaching the team to keep their own kid's dream alive because that kid can't cut it on a better team - the only way their kid would play is if they actually coached and ran the team.

We have seen years and years of lesser players starting on softball, little league and travel teams that would not have been on the field if their parent weren't the coach. It's sad, but true.

Our kids both played on park district teams, but weren't very good at it so they didn't take any one's position, but a coaches kid always got to play, no matter how good they were.

The kids knew the lineups were unfair and slanted for friends, family and associates of the coaches and coaches would purposely bend the rules and out and out cheat to win a game or get a better position for playoffs. It was despicable and they were not the type of people we wanted our children to look up to. We were thankful that our children knew the difference between right and wrong and that they didn't want to play for those coaches.

As parents we have to constantly be reminded that what we do with children should also be a learning experience for them as human beings, not just the coach's conduit to greatness on the ball field. Our kids were never successful on the baseball or softball fields, but both played college sports and received scholarships for them. Clearly they have athletic ability and you have to wonder if the poor coaching in little league and LJMS had anything to do with their disinterest in those sports?

Let them play rec, its great for a lot of reasons to play ball unless u want them exposed to how crazy kiss ass parents put their kids on a pedestal and get even the kids believing they are special. The same group of kids and parents that act like they are superstars will be at each others throats come time for high school. Kind of sad but fun to watch after all the years of them looking down and being mean to other kids. There are some exceptional players but the majority are mediocre and kidding themselves.

Guess who this is, someone who does not have kids, and wo uses the terms he does. He is one sick fellow. He is not a father so he has no idea what is going on. Let the kids play and have fun. There is a distinction that can be drawn and that is that it is America's pastime and let the child decide if he wants to play. Be supportive of your kids and the child will know it. There is nothing like having a good parent. This fellow has a sick mind. And did you notice how things are not spelled correctly, we all know who this is. We are ontop of his posts daily.

So father's get to be men, but mother's are just moms? I'm glad I didn't grow up in your generation then. I guess I will just go find my husband so I can iron his shirts, polish his shoes and cook his dinner.

Sorry, not for me.
