I have lived in Lock Haven around 3 years. I moved here after living in Pittsburgh my entire life.
I have never been in a city full of such rude, intolerable people in my life. If your not born and raised in this town you can forget about ever fitting in. This town has such potential. Its a college town- there could be huge potential with that. However the townies hate college students. When I've asked why its because they say they bring in drugs and violence. However after working in this area long enough- I know that the drug problems are primarily stemmed from people who lived in this area there entire life. I'm not saying that college students are perfect they are not! Drive down any college street on any given weekend and you'll see numerous events going on, which I'm sure include underage drinkers. However as much as I heard that Judge Sanders was such a tough man when it came to underage drinking, I have yet to see that. It seems that the people in this town love to blame college students but when it comes down to nabbing them for underage drinking the police are too busy hanging out at sunoco.
Another problem I have with this town is whats with all the teenage pregnancies? I know theres easily available birth control- you do have a Planned Parenthood in town. What kind of sex education are central mountain students recieiving? Because I'd like to nominate you get a new sex ed program, because yours hit the mark. With seeing a 16 girl ready to have a baby it makes me wonder how many of these girls are walking around with a std, if they are not using protection. This town needs a major attitude adjustment.
I know I'm going to be attacked and say go back to where you came from, if you don't like it here. My job is here. I'm not a college student. I've seen them being pushed around and I'm sick of it! I've had it with these towns people and they're closed minds. There are problem and this city turns a blind eye to all of them.

You have hit the nail directly on the head. And to go one step farther, someone should point out the fact that Lock Haven/Mill Hall area is not entire county. For some reason the "Havenites" fail to pull their heads out of the sand long enough to notice that there are entire communities to the north and south that still are within the borders of "their" county. Lock Haven/Mill Hall is not the center of the world.

:ock Haven is a town full of druggies and no good poor folk.
The police, well i hear they are all dirty cops, and I believe it.
This town is just one of those towns that could possibly just blow up and no one would care....

Dear Jane Doe from TN -

Lock Haven used to be a quaint town, with a downtown you loved to go to on a Friday night. There were a few dress shops, a men's store, an ice cream parlor, shoe stores, etc. It was a family town, a perfect place to raise a family.

I moved away in 1992 and I long to see, when I come home, the way it used to be.

I'm sorry you have such a low opinion of the people there. There are A LOT of good, hardworking, loyal people still there. They would give you the shirt off your back, you could call them up day or night and they'd be there. I grew up there, so I don't know about your statement about, "not fitting in" - but I find that hard to understand.

I think that Lock Haven people, if they never got out - just never evolved. They can't understand there is way more to life than what they have there. And some do, but they choose to live there and they enjoy it.

Don't knock it. It's just a sweet little town that went awry and those of us who remember a better day, wish it was the same.

I really just need to put in some "townie" perspective here; you are correct most people here are ignorant assholes, there are drugs in town and from the college students, while the cops hang out at the Sunoco, I don't believe they are all corrupt, just silly old men.
About the ignorance thing, from what I've seen they just think that what they are doing is FAR more important than helping someone they don't know. Many of the locals can be that way while at the same time there are still some good people in the town.
Yes, a lot of the drugs come from inside the town but a lot come from the students as well, it's kind of a 50-50 thing. I believe that wherever you go you will end up finding drugs. That's just how it is, drugs are everywhere... Personally just keep it to yourself and I don't care if you abuse substances.
From what I understand about the underage drinking in Lock Haven, the reason it isn't taken care of is because the police force at night doesn't have enough man power to go after an intire college party. And they do have bigger problems to worry about, believe it or not there is a lot of domestic violence here, trust me I've seen it first hand.
I however COMPLETELY agree with your statement on teenage pregnancies. I might not be that old but at least I know what a condom is and how to use it, besides blowing it up as a balloon. I hate to say this, but the girls in this town are sluts. But there are still some nice ones.
As for bradley poops... I happen to have many HOMOSEXUAL friends in town... that have lived here, for a long time. And sorry to say it, but John McCain lost. And really? Immigrants, you must have not really been here, we have a lot of Mexican migrants here and for your information there is a family who owns Dinos Pizza in the State and Williamsport Mall, they just recently took their Citizenship test.
We don't go around placing forums on your town... that I know of and it saddens me to see that the residents of Lock Haven didn't treat you with more respect, I guess you just haven't met the right people. The area is a bit clique-y but there are still some sane people who don't have their heads in their asses.

Alrighty, I get called a townie more than anyone I know. However, I am not actually from Lock Haven. I've lived here for somewhere around 5 years. I currently reside in a town called Howard about 20 minutes towards State College. And even though i'm just as close to State College as I am Lock Haven, I would much rather come to "The Haven." My reasoning for this is simple; I was not accepted by most anyone I've ever met in any other small town I've lived in in PA, but when I came to LH I actually found people who cared about me enough to be there for me and call me a friend. Sure, there are plenty of ignorant assholes in this town, and I come across them everyday since i work at a place where they happen to gather. If you have a problem with someone because they happen to not like outsiders then what you need to do is to not worry about them. Obviously they're happy in their closed mind society, so leave them alone. If you want to be so accepted so badly then maybe you should probably be more accepting yourself. I am a very peaceful and respectful person, i make bad and good decisions like any other human, and i have many friends just like me. I'm also friendly to people who have absolutely no qualities i possess. We coexist, maybe you should learn to as well.

As for drugs and sex; it's their life. let them live it. stop judging. it's not your place. they make their decisions and you make yours. when they start to effect you and get you hooked on their habits, then you can gripe. until then, shut it please. we're all humans, that's the only thing we need to have in common. learn to coexist, for real.

Ok, all u pricks that are talking shit can go back to where the fuck they came from. Yeah drugs are bad in this town, there are alot of teen preganceys, and the cops are fucked up. But if you read the lock haven express you would see that most the major drug dealers are from philly, and maybe the town would not be so depressed if their were jobs in the area to support us. Also the police news blows up when the college kids are in town then things settle when they are not. And for the if your not from here your not accepted is 100% true. This used to be a good town. Then the hammermill closed which left alot of people job less so crime rates went up. It happens every where. In when more people come into the town it makes it alittle harder to find a job. I mean common sence says if a town has no work for people dont bring more people in, right. In by the way, Lock Haven does have alot of hard working people here that earn a honest living. And the difference from this city compared to other cities is that we kill animals not people. But I'm sure if ass holes keep saying things about us we can waste a shell on some thing else.

If you co to any college campus on the weekend around the county you will see kids goofing off having parties and just having a good time being young and experimenting, its all about being young and being in college, having that college experience.... and underage drinking is one of them

While occasionally it smells like that in summer, given the number of nearby cornfields, LH is not complete shit. There are those of us who have heard of computers, and have graduated from college. If you walk around being critical of every local you meet and treating everybody like crap, you're likely to to get the same returned to you in spades.

Anybody hear of the triple homocide may 2 2009? Two males from Maryland and Pennsylvania where driving under the influence and collided with three white tail deer! Upon impact not all where injured enough to pass. So the driver of the 2004 Dodge Durango deceided to finish the job with a large knife. At this point the two males proceeded to put the bodys of the recently deceased deer into the rear storage compartment of the badly damaged vehicle. It is beleived that the deer where still partially alive at this point because of the condition of the interior of the vehicle. These two individuals where picked up by Loch Haven Police department and where questioned and released on there own recognizance.

I attended LHU in the mid 80's and it seems that some things never change. I still have a few friends that live in town, but they only live there a for three to six months out of the year. They tell me the same things, many Havenites dont like outsiders. Many think Lock Haven is the center of the universe. How this mentality can still be prevalent is astounding considering all the college students and the economic impact that LHU brings to the city. Sure the students can cause trouble at times but that is to be expected. LHU students are angels compared to what I have seen at Lafayette College, U of Maryland, Ohio State. Yes after leaving LHU I got degrees at all three. I visited Lock haven back in 2003 and the scenery is still as beautiful as I remember it as an 18 year old. Lock haven is a quaint town that needs more stable businesses downtown and a one corporation to set up shop and bring a few hundred jobs to the area. I know the days of Piper Air and Hammermill are gone, but I cant believe with all the potential Lock Haven is just becoming a skeleton college town. I think the "townies" could turn things around if they wanted to but; however, many dont know anything else but the being the county seat of Clinton COunty.

Joined the military out of high school because I saw no future in Lock Haven. I look at the taxes you people pay in PA and am astounded you tolerate it. Seems like for the amount you pay you should be getting some value for your money. As far as outsiders go, many of the people in town have never been outside the state limits so how would they know how to act with people from "off somewhere".
The police department was and will always be a joke when they hire people who we used to beat up in school and now they have a badge to get even.
Don't see any improvement coming your way either. I'd suggest moving out, but for many its not an option.

Hahaha this town reminds me of a third world country. I am an economics major and I went to NYU, and from what i know the lack of jobs in this town is due to businesses being shutdown because of a nice place we like to call Walmart. I am surprised stores such as Weis are still in business with their ridiculous prices. However i do see hope in this little town because of the university, i believe this university has the ability to change this town, especially if it continues to excel in in the medical field and teaching. I can definitely see a positive future once the college becomes more well known for its medical background such as Physician Assistant. This will bring in more people and henceforth more money into businesses and slowly this town has the ability to change rather than becoming nonexistent in the next 20 years.
