Lithium ion is much more energy dense then lead acid so that is the best being used now. However, lithium fluoride has eight times more energy density then current cells.

And Stanford Ofshinsky developed a metal that soaks up hydrogen like a sponge. It's safe to fill and carry and a vehicle can go 150 miles on a charge.

We are still stuck in the Barney Clark phase of development in auto propulsion.
