I say forget subsidizing car technologies that are not ready for prime time. We're all paying for the full cost of $90K for a Volt while the owner only pays $33K after the rebate. When we get to a lithium floride battery with eight times the energy density of today and maybe half the cost, then we have something everybody will want to be driving. Bikes and such will benefit by this technology too and we can have a nation of lazy bikers.lol

The goverment already has batterys that can go 1,000 miles on a charge. OOP'S, You didnt hear it from me!!! I wasnt here, This conversation didnt take place,UFO'S are swamp gas and weather baloons!!!

No need to be cryptic. Lith-flouride tech can do that and there are several more possibilities. Energy density and cost are the blocking points for batteries. Safety is also an issue of course. We seem to be stuck at the "Barney Clark" level of development. Money is spent pushing the limits of old battery technology at the neglect of new technology that would put us on the Moore's Law curve.

Truth just means nothing to you, does it? Read the article that started all this BS about the Volt costing $90K. Go to paragraphs 22-24.
Even by Reuters own statement, it only costs $26k to build the Volt. They heaped on R&D costs. That is not done in the business world.
Every single product in the world has R&D costs that are made up in time. In fact, the Volt is on schedule to recoup R&D Costs in 3 years. The Prius took 5 years to recoup.
Do you honestly believe that anybody but other haters believe you? And by the way, you and De Plaines are about the last haters around. A year ago, you would have had more company.
Use your brain, man. 95% of the Volt is just another car. Electric motors don't cost anywhere near what an ICE motor does. The battery cost is now down to about $8,000. Where in the world do you get $90K? Once again, it costs $26k to build the car. Read the article. They hate the Volt and they aren't as big a liar as you are.

You are out of touch with business and accounting. All costs must be accounted for. If the extensive R&D is not in the VOLT cost, then it must be in other vehicles to subsidize is. Otherwise, GM goes broke. OK, broke again.
Drug companies have high RD costs too. They try to get it where they can, mostly off the specific drug before the patent runs out.
Don't ask me as a Chevy owner or taxpayer to support some tool who likes to run around thinking he's on the tech edge at my expense.

You can deduct sales tax here. Guess I'm Not buying any more cars in Michigan until Snyders' war on workers has stopped with his exit.

We need to hear more about Stanford Ovshinski's efforts. He's dead now, but he has over 400 patents including the NiMH battery we have all used. He proposed successful ways to generate and use hydrogen. He invented a metal that stores hydrogen without using those high pressure tanks that are dangerous. He and his wife were driving prototype cars 140 miles on a hydrogen fill. The gas fuel tank is replaced with this smaller capsule containing this hydrogen absorbing material. The tank is filled and a regular internal combustion engine drives off with zero pollution.
He proposed these ideas in the 70's and GM rejected his notions, probably because he holds the patents.
