Editor: Regarding The St. Augustine Record's April 26 story, "Deputy gets second chance," it is unbelievable that Sheriff David Shoar believes that Deputy Halford "Bubba" Harris II should not be fired. Shoar is quoted as saying, "For me it boiled down to a guy who got into a domestic with his wife." I thought domestic violence was a crime.
The story also quoted Harris, "If you look at the people that are claiming this stuff, it's people that are not gonna have anything good to say about me anyway." The old everyone-is-out-to-get-me excuse.

The sheriff said that the December incident was not a crime. "There were no obvious signs of violence." What about sheer terror? What woman would run out of the house naked to get away from her abusive husband if she was not terrified? This man has committed numerous crimes against his wife; yet he can still be trusted to "protect" the public from these same crimes.
The story said Harriss threatened his wife with a gun. This is aggravated assault. Threw her to the ground. This is battery. Caused bruising to her arm. Battery.
Before being employed by the sheriff's office, the story said, he committed aggravated assault on her and he hit her in the breast while she was pregnant. Doesn't the sheriff's office conduct background checks anymore?
Shoar has been an avid supporter of Betty Griffin House (safety shelter for victims of domestic violence). Has he forgotten the cases that he worked while on the street? This is a slap on the face to all victims.
Col. Todd Thompson wrote that Harris "violated the community's trust."
The sheriff has violated the trust of every abuse victim and every person in St. Johns County.
Shoar says Harris was not given special treatment because he was a law enforcement officer. Who is he related to?
For 4 years, Harris terrorized his wife. 2 years while with the sheriff's office. How many more chances?
The headline on the second part of the story reads: "Being truthful helped the deputy in the Sheriff's eyes." Harris violated numerous department policies and criminal laws. But wait. He told the truth. As long as he tells the truth, he will still have a job.
What an outrage.

http://behindthebluewall.blogspot.com/2009/05...

Harris was forced to resign and anybody else would have been behind bars. His wife did divorce his sorry azz. THIS IS AN OUTRAGE to be hired as a deputy dealing with females in any form. A spouse that is abusive will always be abusive and not just to their mate.

How many more bad cops are in Live Oak?

Are you saying Harris has been hired by the Suwannee County Sheriff? If so, surely a mistake has been made.

That's what I'm saying. He was never arrested of course. Most victims won't press charges although I thought the new law was they don't have to.

Please be very clear about this. Mr. Moore are you saying he currently a SUWANNEE COUNTY DEPUTY? If this is true I can ask the Sheriff. While the alleged deputy may have committed serious actions against a human he was not arrested and therefore can be hired. If there is some record of this behavior I would be surprised he would be working. Regardless as the publisher of the Independent Radio News it would be of public interest. What I am concerned with here is there is no mention of his leaving St. Johns County and all his actions took place outside this Judicial Circuit. Please advise.

Credit goes to the Suwannee County News group for bringing this info to light.

Did you read the article or do a search. His name pops up all over the place in search engines. Ask the Sheriff and yes he recently arrested a woman for disorderly intox and in additon she got charged with battery on a LEO and resisting arrest. Harris almost broke her arm and tased her. John your supposed to be a newsguy then research it yourself.

This guy does not need to be in law enforcement.
http://staugustine.com/stories/050709/news_05...

Shoar's decision in March overruled internal recommendations to fire Harris.
Col Todd Thompson, the director of law enforcement for the Sheriff's Office, recommended not retaining Harris, writing, "The actions of Deputy Harris are in direct conflict with our core values as well as our policy" and that Harris' domestic abuse on his wife was "particularly egregious and trouble(s) me deeply."
Harris drew a 10-day suspension without pay, continuing counseling and was notified he would be subject to drug testing at any time. He was removed from the SWAT team. Any further conduct of the same type over the next 24 months would lead to termination, Shoar warned him.

Re: the woman that was arrested...

She was arrested for disorderly intoxication, I know if I was with my family and had to witness and put up with some drunk I would be upset. So what if he tased her, she committed battery on the officer and she's intoxicated you suffer the consequences, maybe she shouldn't have drank or gotten meth-up'ed. What was he supposed to do make her a pot of coffee? As far as I know no arrest nor conviction for the police officer. More power to them.

Thank you Suwannee County Police.

Sam,
There is nothing in any public record that we can cite. The information leads me to past and not current events that mostly take place elsewhere. Until there is a public record or the officer, "thrusts himself into public view" I am not going to touch this. As far as the incident is concerned with the recent suspect being arrested, the report indicates the officer acted within policy. However, we can watch this situation and if anything within the public realm surfaces we will report it.

A person with this kind of past leads to suspicions........did he really have to tass her or was it just his abusive self coming out? Were you there to see how this woman could have committed battery on a very husky cop? You are one dumb chit if you want to cover for this cop that does not need to be in law enforcement. You are certainly an ass if you approve of a man beating on a woman.

October 2008: Become angry and threatened that if he found another man's car parked at his wife's house, he would go in and only their daughter "would leave alive."
Nov. 25, 2008: Became angry, threatening to "put a ------- bullet" in his wife's head.

TWO INCIDENTS OFFICIALLY DOCUMENTED BY LAW ENFORCEMENT
March 10, 1999 (Reported by Live Oak Police Department): Halford Harris II was listed as a suspect in a criminal case in which he was reported as committing battery (twice) on a 61-year-old male victim following a verbal argument. The case was exceptionally cleared when the victim declined prosecution after receiving an apology from Harris.(DOES THIS SURPRISE ANYONE?)
Oct. 25, 2002 (Reported by Live Oak Police Department): Halford Harris II was listed as a suspect in a criminal mischief case in which he was reported as damaging the vehicle of a rival subject and then becoming involved in a verbal confrontation with him. Harris was documented as having threatened to "kick his ass." Harris denied committing the criminal mischief, but acknowledged the verbal confrontation.

INS stands on its decision. We have other issues that are taking our time and resources. I take your comment about resigning as a joke. I wish someone would fire me but since I work for next to nothing as do the others involved no one will. We can watch this for a new incident and at that point it would be news.
This will stand until that condition or the one stated earlier are met. If you were a subscriber you would know INS mostly deals with the public beat first and then spot news second. While this issue concerns you greatly our editorial board feels that my decision as publisher and CEO is a good one to follow at this time. But assure you the name has been put in the watch file and a program developed to watch for his name showing up in a possible future event or incident.

That man is a disgrace to the uniform and should never have been hired as an officer that is hired to protect the citizens not abuse them. I bet you Joe Blow would never be hired and I hope if Harris has been abusive to anyone he's arrested they come forward, but of course like the woman that was arrested it will be said she deserved it, just because a cop said so.

Again, pay attention Corky. NO ARREST OR CONVICTION...is it really a difficult concept for you to grasp? You cannot fire someone nor refuse to hire someone based on unproven allegations no matter how much is written on the internet. Even if a preivous employer recommends to not hire someone, that is at the discretion of the person doing the hiring. Who's to say the previous employer is holding a grudge against the guy? You can neither prove nor disprove an allegation unless you have evidence. The only "evidence" that exists here is written on a blog. An arrest record/criminal conviction would be proof. A blog don't cut it bubba.

Also, no I wasn't there.(as if you were *rolling eyes*) Doesn't matter how small they are, evidently you've never taken a basic criminal justice course, any cop will tell you it's the small ones that are the worst and get the most testy. Especially under the influence. You must be from that "bar trash" clique that think the cops are out to get everybody.

Another thing I never said diddly squat about abusing women. I experienced it as a child, I had to go to therapy, I know the horror, I lived it.

Again, thank you to our Police Officers

@Outrageous, who is Joe Blow? This is some Suwannee County Police Officer, not British Royalty nor the President. He was never arrested nor convicted, he does not have a criminal record. Now I can say observing some of the trash in Live Oak like Walmart for example, I would dare to say most of them probably have criminal records and could not be hired by the Police Department. Hell, on the Live Oak FB page they got a rapist, a coke dealer, and a recently released violent home invader posting there LOL!!! I'm currently in the process of moving to a small town in NC, on their web pages it's bake sales, cookouts, bbqs, baseball games, mom and apple pie...on Live Oak webpages it's cop conspiracies, showing off tattoos, and bar fights. And people complain why there's so much garbage all over the area, river, and parks...doesn't surprise me in the slightest, look at the trash you have for human beings LOL!!! The town in NC I'm moving to we have art galleries, you got a nudist resort. Unbelievable.

"TWO INCIDENTS OFFICIALLY DOCUMENTED BY LAW ENFORCEMENT"

One took place 13 years ago, the other 10 years ago. I would hate to lose a job position for incidents that occurred a decade ago or longer, especially when no criminal convictions or arrests were made.

@Donna Carver,

Really? I bitch about LO? What about all these people bitching about LO Police? They're the ones that risk their lives everyday dealing with the garbage I bitch about. They're the ones that keep this area reasonably safe. BTW, my parents live in LO, don't get too cozy I frequently visit.

For a so-called christian you judge this police officer with neither arrests, convictions, or a verified criminal history, everything else is alleged, neither provable nor dis-proven..."do not judge lest ye be judged" so it goes...

He was hired by the Police Department. I admit those are quite a lot of allegations, which makes me suspicious but again no convictions, no arrests, no provable criminal history.

The Police Department hired him. I'll take their word.

For a so-called conservative you have the anti-cop paranoia of a glowing liberal.

I respect the Police and their services, risking their lives everyday. Obviously this isn't Mayberry RFD...this "small town" is as bad as any big city, I wasn't in LO but a week and there was a triple execution styled murder "down in the boondocks". When I used to go to WInn Dixie cutting through Walker I'd always see guys on bikes selling and they weren't selling samples of Earl Grey tea...I've never been in a small town that has its own drug scoring section LOL! As I said contrasting my other small town...we have an art gallery, a theatre, and a couple of fine dining restaurants, four (4) major universities no more than an 3 quarters an hour away... you got a nudist resort, biker bars, and jails and prisons inside and outside all up and down your main roads. We have ONE (1) prison outside our town and we have triple the population of LO. We have plenty of trashy people too, but nowhere near that of LO, and most people in LO are fine, decent nice people like anywhere else...WAYYYYY nicer than South FL that's for damn sure, or even here in Jax, sorry if I didn't get that point across...but there's a LOT of shit in LO, notice you don't have many schools 'round here? Ever looked to see how many sexual predators live in the area? In FL the law is a child predator cannot live within certain mileage of a school. From my folk's home there are SIX (6) child predators that I can walk to.

Hey let's bash the cops!

I can understand once in a blue moon someone might have an issue, but in these parts seems all these people have some warped conspiracy theory about this cop and that cop. And then when a criminal with a violent criminal history is released from prison two (2) months ago, beats someone to a pulp inside bar, and is once again arrested...people defend him saying he was rehabilitated, because we all know when you're a violent criminal with a rap sheet a mile long but you finally got rehabilitated when you were released two (2) months ago, the best place to stay rehabilitated and keep out of trouble is a bar! Unbelievable.

Let's bash the cops!

I'll be honest, I've complained about cops with seat belt and speeding violations, and having your day ruined sucks...but these guys many are veterans lay their asses on the line everyday. Got to put up with domestic violence, drug addicts and dealers, lunatics, nasty people giving you attitudes, drunk and drugged up "bar trash" biting, scratching, trying to fight, you're forced to immobilize them by using pepper spray or tasers and you're labeled police brutality lol.

Some of you guys are no better than that garbage in Los Angeles that was defending the rioting, and sticking up for vicious criminals and violence after Rodney King.

You so-called conservatives need to read Patrick J. Buchanan's latest book about the end of Western Civilization.
