Caledonian Record Online Paper

The Caledonian Record maintains a "free" online service to post the daily news. Their hard copy paper publishes daily Monday thru Saturday. Why then do they throw up their free online posted newspaper in a hasty manner with little thought? Example: this past week there was NO news posted for Saturday at all (according to the time stamp on their home page) but it WAS apparently updated on SUNDAY, a day they do NOT publish a hard copy paper! So I was technically reading Saturdays news a day late! I like to be able to read "current" news online without paying $200\year for an online- only subscription. I also like to be "green" and not pay for a hard copy paper that I then have to pay to recycle 6 papers at the end of the week. I've noticed certain sections of the paper like obituaries, births and deaths are not proofed well before being posted, sometimes the same listing is posted 2 or more times! The same with the Business Watch section. Another frequent issue is that the date and time stamp that the paper is updated on the homepage is often incorrect OR never updated at all for a particular date until sometimes 11pm at night. Who wants to read for example Wednesdays news at 11pm ON WEDNESDAY when the people that are supposed to maintain the site get around to finally posting it?! It seems like by doing shoddy work posting old news is doing them a DIS-service and giving themselves a bad reputation. Not to mention people that see that would not think twice about purchasing a subscription to the Union Leader or Courier instead!

I've noticed the same thing. Doesn't really make reading their paper or buying the hard copy worth it if they can't take time to get the online copy up correctly. I've really lost faith in them lately.

I was reading their paper all the time and noticed the same thing. It is very annoying and I'm glad I dont pay for the online or hard copy subscription. I live in NY (have relatives in NEK) so it would really piss me off if I paid for it and had this happen. I started reading the Union Leader online now instead.:-) They don't have problems with getting the news up on time, don't post duplicate articles, etc. Also another problem with the CR is that i've written to them a few times and asked them if they would be covering a certain thing or if they had more information on (whatever issue) and they NEVER WROTE BACK TO ME! I gather from doing some googling that because they're family owned since they started up that gives them the right apparently to be snooty and not get back to people when they write in. Entirely another reason to switch to a different paper.:-)

They still have double posts and errors. They also like substituting words or shortening them now which is extremely annoying. They did that recently with an article about Dartmouth Hitchcock Hospital. They used "Bennies" for Benefits and CU for Civil Union in the headline! Very unprofessional. If they want people to continue purchasing their paper then they need to stop doing that.

What's worse is the way they treat their employees. Many are leaving in disgust. I wouldn't buy a this paper for that reason alone! Anyway, I get all the news I want online for free. As another poster mentioned - I have to throw all those dead trees away when I buy newspapers!

I didnt know they were nasty to their employees. That doesn't surprise me though. Not at all. Caledonian Record Sucks! I read Topix and Union Leader online now instead.

Yes, Jake. That is likely a major reason the CalRec is printing crappy news - the good employees are leaving if at all possible. If you are interested, find out what happened to the pressmen (the employees who ran the printing press at the Caledonian-Record). It was just awful what management put them through before laying them off.

Of course some CalRec employees feel they have to stay to pay the bills, but there is a general feeling at this newspaper of the rats leaving a sinking ship.

The Internet has pretty much destroyed the once lucrative newspaper industry. The great ride the family-run CalRec had is over - and they are taking it out on their employees by reducing wages, benefits, and shifting the blame to them.

Ron:

That's not cool. I think a lot of businesses are doing that now though. Some of them are even getting rid of the good employees now and trying to find excuses to do so because of not any other options. But still, I don't think they should be rude and mean to try and make people quit. Hardcopy newspapers and papers that print sloppy biased work online is falling by the wayside. Its very easy for consumers to find other ways to get news than to read (or pay for) one particular newspaper. If I was a reporter writing articles for print I don't care how nasty they treated me, it would make me want to stay just to spite them if I had the option. And also it would still be my job to write UNBIASED and UN-OPINIONATED articles that were correctly formatted and not double published. I've noticed they don't double-publish articles in their printed copy? So why do it online? It's very irritating.

Caledonian Record is rude, lazy, biased and extremely opinionated. They get all their news articles from sitting around on their @sses in meetings having it spoon-fed to them, that's why there are so many errors.:-) And now they're trying to turn their online so-called FREE paper into an advertisement for their PAID version by not letting you read the Letter to the Editor, Business Watch, births, weddings or engagements sections. They might as well take the whole f*cking thing offline then and not do it at all. Just have a parked domain that says "if you want to read this paper online, pay $150 cuz we no longer offer a FREE paper".

Dear Caledonian Record: KISS MY @SS B*TCH!! I WILL NEVER BUY YOUR G*D-DAMNED LOUSY EXCUSE FOR A NEWSPAPER AGAIN.
You got that right

Ever since they posted all the nasty details of that murder in Lunenburg online for children to freely click on, where the guy supposedly had post-murder sex with that girl he killed that was the last straw for me. I will NEVER read their paper again. Stuff like that never should have been made public anyways and if they were going to, they sure as hell could have glossed over it, instead of including the full reports stating that nasty crap. They're biased, opinionated, lazy and full of pure bull-sh*t and their paper isn't worth paying for. It's not even worth reading if it's FREE. Which means I don't read anything affiliated with the C-R either, like The Record.:-) Like I said: KISS MY @SS!

CR promotes disharmony in the St. J Community. The Caledonian's negative comments, actions, and consistant inaccuracies support the fact that it should no longer be a part of the community. It offers no solutions and exascerbates the communities problems with typical bully tactics. Operating from a bully pulpit, they have critizied just about every town institution that exists in St. Johnsbury.
When I was a child, I was taught that news should be fair and unbiased, because people believe what they read. The owner of the Caledonian, has essentially turned this paper into a the local version of the "The Enquirer."

Absolutely true. I read the Courier. It's not biased, they stick to the facts and report in an appropriate manner. Caledonian Record should learn something from them. THE RECORD is just as bad. I picked it up one day and there was an article about veterans. Underneath that photo there were ZERO names of the people to pay recognition to them. On the very opposite page there was a photograph of a child and that person was named! How disrespectful! I was totally disgusted.
