This is what the Chief of the Billerica Police Department should be doing rather than buying car after car. Also, local fire dpeartments, Weymouth for example, have saved considerable money by leasing fire trucks. All options need to be reviewed to save money

Billerica did try this at one time and there was no savings. In addition, three years is a long time for a police car that is used 24/7. In a large town like Billerica your looking at about 150,000 miles on a car at the end of the lease. That might be fine for a personal car but that's an accident waiting to happen with an emergency vehicle. The amount of hours on the engine would most likely be the equivalent of over 250,000 miles. Repairs and maintenance cost in that third year would negate the savings. Not to mention how much down time a car has with that type of mileage on it.
